General / No long a Fazer owner!
« on: 19 July 2015, 06:08:58 pm »
Had a great offer on a 2000 VFR800fi which i took. Traded my FZS600 in against it.
I imagine i'll be back on a Fazer in the future, when i can afford an FZ1.

For now; The VFR is a LOT of fun. Power is all down low/mid where i can actually use it, and the V4 rumble makes a nice change. Sporty position is taking some getting used-to, but i'm sure my back will sort itself out after a couple of weeks daily riding.

The only annoying thing was that; In fixing/cleaning the FZS for trade-in/sale, it looks FAR better than it ever has. Dammit.

  • FZS600 5DM (first run Fazer)
  • 1998 / S-Reg
  • 46000+ miles
  • Grey and black
  • Purchased as Cat-C (cosmetic damage) and restored
  • Collect from central Leicester or delivery at cost anywhere in UK mainland.
  • Viewing available from 9am-8pm Monday to Saturday, 12pm-6pm Sundays.
  • 2 spare keys
  • Full MOT history
  • In road legal, ride-away condition.
  • Priced according to condition and work needed but willing to hear sensible offers.
Looking to change bikes, have a good offer on a nice VFR800 i don't want to miss, so looking to sell quick. Selling cheap because of VFR offer and it needs a little work which, if i do, will put the price up by £100), so offering here first. Work listed below and shown in pictures. Sale may be cancelled if VFR offer is withdrawn or my insurance company decide to shaft me for changing bike mid-contract.

  • Mechanically and electrically sound
  • New Hagon rear shock late June 2015
  • Well cared for bike, and in very good condition for a 17 year old bike which has been used daily.
  • Plenty of life left in both tyres
  • Renthal bars & 2 inch risers for better comfort
  • Custom paint (and fully registered with the DVLA)
  • Recent MOT (Early June 2015)
  • Category C (cosmetic damage only) - hence the lack of front fairing.
  • Thousands of miles left in heavy-duty DID X-Ring chain and sprockets
  • Oxford heated grips
  • Braided hoses to front brake
  • New front brake pads as of late June 2015
  • New front wheel bearing as of late June 2015
  • Delkevic stainless steel exhaust pipes
  • Loud dual-tone horn
Notes:
  • Small scuff to rear panel.
  • Comes with replacement fuel tank
  • Comes with front wiring loom
  • Comes with additional headlight and mounting brackets
  • Comes with spray-gun paints (grey and black)
  • Sold as seen, viewing recommended.
  • Will be cleaned before sale
  • If viewed early in the day, engine may be warm from use, as would be the case in the early evening. But it starts every day as i use it all the time as my only transport.
Let's talk about the work needed:
Fuel tank either needs fixing and the paint touching up, or the replacement tank putting on (after welding and paint)
Headlights need putting back to twin, and front wiring loom needs fitting

The fueltank sprang a leak a week or so ago due to aged and blocked breather pipes (now replaced) so the tank has some binary putty over the leaky area which has stopped it leaking.

Again; This is work i intend to do, but will put the price up by £100.

PM me on here if interested to arrange viewing, questions as a reply to topic, please.

For Sale & Wanted / [WANTED] Fuel tank - FZS600 boxeye or foxeye
« on: 01 July 2015, 07:21:58 pm »
Mine sprung a leak today, so time to replace it.

I'd prefer black or silver,  but i'll probably paint it anyway.

Resolved: Do not power wash your bike. Something was wet. Dried over night. Started first time this afternoon after spending some quality time drying out in a warm garage.

------------

Sure i submitted a post here... Anyway, let's try again...

Short version: Everything seems to work, but no spark in plugs.

Bike wont start (1998 5DM). I get a fuel and oil warning light when i hit the starter button.
I did a little jet washing earlier to get the winter goop off of it, spent some hours cleaning and painting etc. Looks great, goes nowhere.
Didn't go nuts with the water: No more than horizontal to the engine, all seems dry under the tank. Had to blast under the rear arch to get the caked gunk out, blasted around the swingarm etc.

Checks made so far:
  • In neutral
  • Kickstand connectors connected
  • Checked connector bundle under tank - all fine and dry
  • Checked battery - Good, dry
  • Checked fuses - Good, dry
  • Kill switch disengaged
  • Fuel in tank
  • Oil in engine (very recently changed)
So far, all that is certain is that the plugs aren't sparking. Even with a fresh plug. No spark.
Maybe it'll dry out whatever i've probably gotten wet overnight. Maybe i got a bit of water into the electronics under the rear fairing somehow (didn't have time to check there, but under the seat is dry etc)

Here's a quick mockup:

Help appreciated.
Probably getting look at professionally tomorrow, but would be nice to go in armed with likely causes which would drastically shorten time on bench.

FZS600 1998 5DM1
Front fairing with screen - Mount - Headlights - Mirrors
Foxeye version also acceptable, provided it's as a set of the same parts.

---------------------------------------
Much as the title.
I need the nose of the bike, basically.

I have instruments, but that's it. Bike needs to go back to standard with some wind protection because my hearing has recently got a hell of a lot worse and i'll need to be doing some daily commuting in 50-60-70mph zones pretty soon.

I don't have those parts because i bought the bike as a Cat-C write-off.

Budget is tight - But when is it not...

6
'Hoy all.

The FZS 600 has been good, but that it doesn't have the standard front fairing (crashed before i got it) is a big problem for me now that i'm going to have to commute about 30-ish miles a day, and maybe more for work. Potentially hundreds of miles.

I need a bike with more power, tank range, and absolutely more wind protection (severe tinnitus/hearing damage).
I have a number of bikes on the list of potentials for less than £3000, and i thought i'd come here to discuss a Fazer with you all.

Those of you who do some reasonable miles quite frequently: How do you feel about the standard screen? Is it enough to smooth the flow of air to stop head buffeting and wind noise? Have you opted for a shorter or taller screen? How has that worked out for you?

For reference: I'm 5ft 11.

I've read this topic, but looking for more feedback on the specifics above.

I'll also be going for some side/lower fairing to smooth the look, maybe a HID kit, crash bungs, better seat, bar risers etc.

I essentially need a sports tourer, and the FZS1000 is a LOT of bang for the buck.
Other bikes on the list of consideration are: VFR800 & VTEC, CBF1000, CB1100XX.

I *was* hoping to get away from an inline 4 to something with a meatier engine note, but i can't ignore what the FZS1000 has to offer, and frankly; In my budget range; Most bikes aren't hugely more powerful than my FZS600, which was a surprise. Specifically the CBF1000 which is amazingly comfortable and has excellent wind protection. But it's only VERY slightly more powerful.

7
'hoy all.

I'm getting about 25mpg right now.
I ride 100% inner-city, so i get that there's a reduction in the economy rating of 55mpg, but surely this is too much?

I don't rev the arse off of it, and i tend to pootle along at about 3.5-4k revs. I do like to accelerate up to the limit where i can, but it's not often.

FZS600 Fazer / [Resolved] [Technical] 'Soft' front brakes
« on: 17 November 2014, 02:41:37 pm »
Recently had a banjo fitting replaced due to a small leak. Brakes were bled, but now feel much less effective than before.
Granted; They were never at 100% as the rotors were bent before i got it. They were straightened out, which sorted as much deformation in the discs as possible, and the brakes were good enough.

All i can think of is that they might need re-bleeding.

Thoughts?

Resolved
Leak on right side due to worn washers.
Now replaced, re-bled at all points and back to where they were (which wasn't 100%, and wont be unless i buy new discs).

FZS600 Fazer / [Technical] Steering feeling very light [Solved]
« on: 06 November 2014, 07:15:29 pm »
Solved.
Had it looked at. It was a loose bearing.

Ahoy.

Over the last week or so, my steering has felt way too light.
I've checked the tyre pressures, and they're correct. I've yet to take it in for a once-over at the garage, though.

It could be the position/angle of the bars as i have Renthals (756) on a 1 inch riser set, and they're rotated back a touch for comfort, but the lightness in the steering seems to have only popped-up recently, and i've had the bars/bike for just over 5 months now. Certainly feels lighter with left turns compared to right, which leads me to think it might be a bearing issue.

I think i'm looking to get some pointers on areas to check.

10
I've been googling and googling and it's just a flood of SEO spam and vague information, so i'm coming here in the hope of getting some hands-on recommendations.
I'm not after a go-pro or anything so fancy, i just want a camera to back me up in case of accident etc. Not looking to start a youtube channel, and i can't even consider the big-brands as i'm just poor.

The present seasonal down-turn in weather and what seems to be an increase in inattentive drivers is starting to make me worry, so i figure this may at least help in the event of an incident.

Ok, so let's move on to needs

  • 480p @30FPS minimum (720p would be nice)
  • Swappable memory card
  • Passable low-light recording
  • Rain proof
  • Record on power (from bike, so it'd be wired in and rain-proof or at least a 1.5/2hr battery life)
  • Reliable mount for use on handlebars
  • Overwrites old files if mem card is full (so record in X minute chunks, i guess)
  • Easy enough to remove the unit from the mount when i park the bike, but secure enough to not fall off while braving our obviously well-kept roads.
Refurbs/2nd hand acceptable, would rather not have no-name import junk if i can avoid it or unless someone has one and can vouch for the quality/suitability.
One current consideration is the Hitachi HDSV01U

So far, it looks like my options are thus:

Cheap option: Generic action cam. About £40 all in.
Passable with an average battery life.

Economy option: SJ4000. About £65 all in.
Seems the best trade-off with features and cost. Added advantage of better battery life, and GoPro accessory compatibility.

Upper option: Mobius. About £85 all in.
A good option if i want to really mess around with things and there are plenty of DIY bits for it.

Getting expensive: GoPro Hero. About £115>£130 all in.
Best battery life and quality.

--
My other option is a used Drift HD, but i haven't included this in the above list as it'd be an item i'd have to bid on, isn't new, and so forth.

11
Just a thought at this point.

Thinking of replacing the rear brake calliper on my '99 Fizzy with an FZ1 rear brake calliper.
Why? Cosmetic reasons. The front and rear brake callipers don't match. The rear is a generic looking calliper.

Would i also need the bracket for an FZ1 rear brake?

Want more pictures? Pictures of the bike before work?

Here's an album of progress so far (Dropbox link, so will constantly be updated, most are high-res).
Here's how it was when i got it (Also dropbox/high-res).
All sorted by date and with descriptives in file name.
I'd have done a nice little album in imgur, but it was being a tit.

I post a fair bit on here, asking for help. I figured it was about time i gave a little something back.

Here's a list of mostly free/safe etc software for Windows (Mostly related to Win7 and up, but most will work on Vista or XP) that almost all of us can find useful.

Internet, security and safer browsing.

Firefox (obvious, i know), or if you use a 64bit install; Waterfox.
Recommended addons for fire/waterfox:
  • Adblock Plus (because who wants to see adverts?)
  • Betterprivacy (For vastly reduced tracking cookie bullshit)
  • British English Dictionary (It surprises me how many people are using the default US dictionary)
  • FaceBook Purity (Lets you filter out all of the crap on facebook, tells you when people have deleted you, and lets you remove things by keyword)
  • Ghostery (Another privacy addon to stop advert tracker cookies)
  • HTTPS everywhere (Automatically selects a secure connection to a website if supported)
  • iReader (one you'll use occasionally, but appreciate when you do - It's a little button which shows a pop-up of JUST the article on a page, and not the other crap)
  • New Tab Homepage (Instead of the default page, you can set any page you like as your home page for when you open a new tab)
  • No YouTube comments (Because they'll all worthless, anyway)
A lot, if not all, of these are available in Chrome, too. Using Internet Explorer? Stop that.

Let's move on to Firewalls. You need one of those. Get Comodo.
I agree the website looks a little spammy, but i assure you it's fine. I've been using it for quite a few years.

This one is a firewall, antivirus and (dodgy app) behaviour blocker, too. It's also free for the basic version which does all of that. The paid version includes tech support. Granted; If you get the version with all the fancy features; It will ask a lot of questions to begin with, but once it's done, it's amazingly good.

Internet storage / cloud storage
Dropbox. Excellent service, supports everything. Sycns files over said everything. 2GB free storage, but both you and I get a little more from this referral link.

http://keepass.info/
Keepass (Free, has windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iPhone, Win Phone support, can link through dropbox so you have all your passwords all the time)

Most people use the same username or even the same password for everything. That's how you get your accounts broken into and your dodgy nudes splashed over the internet.

With Keepass you have only to remember ONE password to unlock the database file, then you can store and create lists of sites/usernames/passwords as much as you like. It even has a feature to generate a password for you, and to tell you how strong it is.

Now you can have a different username and very strong password for every site you visit.

Music and video playback
For music, i use Musicbee. It's free, it's awesome, it looks great, works equally great.
I used to love WinAmp, but it's glory days are LONG gone.

For films and TV programs, XBMC (now named Kodi) is an excellent, free choice. It's a nice visual way to browse what you have, it can even grab all the info and covers from the internet.

Tagging a sorting music, fixing the sound levels.
I use MP3tag (free) to get all the info on my music collection correct, get it all tagged with the proper info and in whatever way i choose. It's very powerful, but also easy to use if you just want to stick to the basic features. It can also organise your collection for you if you like.

To keep all the music at the same volume; I use MP3gain. It analyses each track and adds a tag to the file to tell a music player how much to turn it up or down. No direct editing of the file at all.

Backups
Yes, you should backup data. Often.
Use FreeFileSync. It's excellent.

Office
No, you don't have to use Microsoft products. There are some great free alternatives which can both read and write in MS formats, so you don't lose compatibility. Try LibreOffice.

Updating non-windows apps, the easy way.
Ninite is a great solution to keep other apps current and secure. It automatically skips the 'option' to install toolbars or whatever else.

That'll do for now. If there's interest, i might expand this to include such things as: Linux and Mac apps, and maybe some more specific software for everything from mass naming files, to tweaking how windows works and so forth.

14
Struggling to get/find information on this.

I'm looking to get rid of my standard cluster as my 99 FZS600 is a bit of a streetfighter (not much, just a bit) and the instrument cluster is massive.
I'd like to fit either a KOSO DB01 or some more traditional pot gauges (on the small side).

I'm facing a number of problems, some of which maybe you can help with:

1. I need info regarding the fitting/wiring of a Koso to a Fazer. Problems? Solutions?
2. Info about other speedo's you've fitted. Recommendations? Issues?
3. Have a used Koso speedo you want to sell for a nice price? Maybe some small pot gauges?

What i DO have is a wiring diagram to connect a Koso DB01 to a FZS600, so i *think* it'd just be a case of snipping wires before the connector and adding connections per-wire and mating them to the equivalent wire on the Koso.

Here's that diagram:

And here's an idea of what i could do with the instruments compared to how the OEM part is currently mounted.

I'd be more than happy to go for the 'Cafe' option above, but finding matching gauges for reasonable money is proving amazingly difficult. Most gauges with a backlight cost a damn fortune and i wouldn't know how to connect them to the bike.

Realistically; I only need a speedo and fuel warning light. But a speedo with matching rev counter and built-in idiot lights would be great. I don't know. I'm just testing the waters to see what i can and can't get away with as i think how i currently have the bike set up looks a bit clumsy and messy.

15
This is starting to bother me far more than it should.

What i have works, yes. But it's ugly.
It could be much more compact and a hell of a lot more tidy with the wiring.

Frustrating that i can't afford a Koso DB01 nor can i fit the damn thing. Pretty much the same story for a cheaper universal speedo.
Lacking technical skill or the money to throw at the issue can be annoying when this close to finishing the bike.

Anyway. Less problems, more solutions. Here's what i have and what i'm thinking of doing with what i have.

I keep thinking of getting some basic type of small speedo etc, but it always comes down to not being able to fit it myself and the reported running issues when not using the standard unit.

Help/suggestions etc very much appreciated.

FZS600 Fazer / What non-standard speedo's have you fitted to yours?
« on: 14 October 2014, 10:04:28 pm »
Curious.
Finding my standard unit to be way too large and bulky given that my Fazer is a street-fighter.

Looking for recommendations etc...

Oh, and if it helps anyone:
FZS600 to Koso DB01+ wiring diagram.

I was all set to get one of these, still want to. But no one seems to want to touch it, and my electrical skills are seriously lacking.
Also: They're a bit beyond my current price-range.

17
FZS600 Fazer / Custom guage backing cards? Can you scan them for me?
« on: 13 October 2014, 09:05:33 pm »
Ahoy all.
Do any of you have access to the backing cards for the 3 dials (speedo, revs, fuel) at all? I can't find much of use on google.
I'm thinking of designing a custom set and would appreciate some high-quality scans if anyone can manage it?

Naturally: I'll also share my work here for others to use. Might even be convinced to do some custom versions for a few people.

18
Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Do Fazer 1000 levers fit FZS600 (1998) Mounts?
« on: 13 October 2014, 07:37:07 pm »
Mostly i'm asking because it's nigh-impossible to find some nice CNC'd levers for the latter, but there's plenty out there for the former.

19
I took the time to make and test this template, fits perfectly.

Covers the brass coloured plate surrounding the rev counter and fuel guage.
Confirmed as fitting the FZS600 5DM 1998 standard instrument cluster. May or may not fit other models.

Get it here.

I'll be sending mine off to the printers with a sheet of that 4D carbon fibre-like vinyl which has the anti-bubble grooves on the reverse. You can, of course, use any adhesive-backed material you like. Just print/cut/trace/cut/apply.

20
Because i'd really like to buy some short/cnc levers without spending a goddam fortune.

These seem good, but compatibility is a concern, naturally.

I guess a reverse of the question is also valid: Would the lever mounts from an 04-10 FZ6 fit my 98 FZS600?

21
Update: I've made one, get it over here.

I've had no luck with my google-fu, and the last product i had from ebay wasn't cut to the correct size, and the seller was an arse.

So: I'm trying to find the actual measurements, unless of course; I can remove the gold surround to apply vinyl then cut to fit?

FZS600 Fazer / (Resolved) Seeking blank keys from reliable source.
« on: 03 October 2014, 06:53:54 pm »
Ahoy all.

Much as above. I have only one key and i'd like to get two more made so i'll be needing some blanks.
I've had a look 'round ebay, and there are a few possibles, but would be happier to take a recommendation from someone on here who has had some which were correct and not crappy import junk.

General / VROOMVROOMMOTHERFOCCER! - A sticker design.
« on: 25 September 2014, 09:05:53 pm »
Based on my self-designed helmet sticker (see below), i thought i'd post this up here.

And here i am sporting the sticker on my quite nice HJC Symax 3 helmet.

And the original inspiration:

Rideless for a week!  So sad.
Tank, Front mudguard and rear plastics are all in a box and ready to go further than i've taken the bike for some much needed TLC!

Naturally; I'll post some pics when i get the bits back and back on.

General / [Recommendations wanted] Sub-£30 waterproof iPhone holder
« on: 01 September 2014, 01:14:34 am »
'hoy

Looking to use my iPhone 4s as a SatNav as i'm the poster-boy for getting lost easily, but need to keep the cost down (dole scum).

Needs to be:
Waterproof
Not prone to falling off at 70mph/going over the slightest bump

Would like:
Charging cable access (also weather proof)
Mountable on handlebar

Simply using audio nav isn't suitable for me as i need to wear ear-plugs most of the time due to very damaged/sensitive hearing, so a visual option is preferred.

Current considerations:
Oxford Strap Nav
