FZS600 Fazer / Re: Fixing Seat Foam
« on: 28 August 2016, 11:19:45 pm »
Yeah i thought of seam sealer tape but i ended up being lazy and not getting any haha.
So i took the original vinyl off, fixed the foam up with silicon RTV and shaped it with a razor after it was dry.
Scotch gaurded the seat foam and refitted the cover.
Feels nice and comfy now without the hard vinyl under it and apart from a bit of a mark on the outer cover from when i was riding it with the gash in the foam so pretty happy.
We'll see how it goes in the wet.

Yeah that's exactly what I've found sadly. And i would imagine it's waterpoof material but the stiching makes lots of holes in it no matter how waterproof it is. We'll see ay! At least it's mostly sunny in Queensland.

I guess I'll just rip it apart and see what i can do, worst case it's stuffed and I'm no worse ofd. Good to head that the vinyl isn't glued on at least! I will managed somthing i reckon. Maybe i can scotch guard my seat cover if it isnt waterproof, im thinking mainly that it'll leak theough the stiching in it.

FZS600 Fazer / Fixing Seat Foam

Has anyone done much with fixing seat foams?
My seat has been fine but a few months ago the vinyl cracked (yay sun) and it tore the seat foam a bit.
So i put duct tape over it and then put a nice looking cover over the top of it all but now the split has gotten worse underneath the new cover and the tape and the cover is now showing the crack through (and you can feel it when riding).
So basically my idea is to take the new cover off, take the vinyl off and then somehow fix the foam and just put the new cover on.
Two problems come to mind.
Is the vinyl cover glued to the OEM foam? Cos that'll make my plan a pain.
Is the foam closed cell or will it take up water like a bastard when it gets wet (cos i suspect my new cover is not waterproof).  Not keen on having a soggy seat for a week after it rains haha.
Alternatively i could somehow repair the vinyl cover somehow and then put my new cover over the top.
And a pic of my new cover just cos.

Washed the bike yesterday. I've just fitted a seat cover cos the vinyl on the seat started cracking (good old australian sun) and some tank grip.
The paint on the fairing and tail is progressively fading but I'll get around to respraying those two bits sometime.
And took the bike for a ride up some mountains near Brisbane at sunset yesterday too. A bit different to the scenery you probably usually see on this forum haha.

I did drawings of the parts you need machined/lasercut/make them yourself with a hacksaw.
I think they are in my build thread but if not i have them on my work computer. I went pretty short with the dogbones for geound clearance but you can still use the centee stand easily and I've grounded my bellypan once or twice so you couls probably go shorter than i did again. I've pushed my forks like 25mm through the triples though (the most you can go and still have wheel to radiator clearance as i recall) to drop the front end though.

48 on the front seems like alot even as a maximum  amount, half the front travel as sag? I have my front set to 30 mm and I've raised the fork oil level with heavier Springs and heavier oil and i get a pretty good range of travel. I can still use pretty much all the front travel with braking in a road situation though. My zip tie around the fork leg usually ends up at 95 to 100mm up the leg after a few commutes and i don't think i stop super hard.

I don't use my large one so much anymore, it doesn't turn into a sail so badly but it does flap a little and it's rubbed through my (already thin) paint on the tail and over the front fairing. Anyone had any luck with lined covers that don't scuff so badly?

Looks like it'd not be great for a pillion?

Yeah I'd get a good stapler, a normal staple gun didn't cut it when I did the gripper seat cover on my ktm.
No one has a 2 tone one ay? Might have to suck it and see ay.

Anyone got one of these on their bikes? From ebay. The vinyl on my fzs is starting to crack and this seems like it'd look good on. Hard to tell with just an isolated photo though.

I did this on my ktm, couldn't get the staples in with a gun like that though, had to get an industrial sized one!
Looks good.
I've wondered about that extra strap too, but with my wet gear in there nothing else will fit anyway!

What are you doing to my thread! :P
Differences between modding in Oz compared to UK? :P

Only new mod is scraping some of the paint off my belly pan at full (well not even actually, pegs weren't nearly on the ground) lean... Will have to add an extra hole and bracket to tuck the left side of it up more I think..

Thanks mate :)
I actually would like to remove the rail entirely and fill the holes in the tail and respray it. My missus doesn't use the rail anyway. I'd also love one of these single seat units but I can't really justify the price...
Its 199 euro plus postage which ends up being like 400 aud in the end :/

And I thought for some reason it was just my bike that buzzed, I have no infills but will Def check the bulbs etc.

Bought a smoked led tail light from Germany to match my new smoked led indicators. IMHO it looks great. Just put it on, will get a pic tomorrow.
One thing I've noticed from led tails is how fast the brake lights come on. I put led tail lights in my silvia, just had one in for comparison and put your foot on the brake and the difference is very noticeable speed wise. Will it make a difference in the real world? Maybe, who knows, can't hurt!

I just did this. Led flasher relay to suit Yamaha, eBay, led indicators, eBay, base plates to make any indicator suit the Yamaha mounting hole in the fairing, eBay. Installed in probably half an hour if that. They look good IMHO.

Yeah no holes in my cdi tray except the ones for the wiring that already existed and also some tiny extra ones I added for my wiring re route. It probably wouldn't be a massive deal if some water got in anyway though, the plugs are pretty solid and various other wiring etc on the bike gets soaked all the time.
The smaller number plate is great compared to that billboard you guys get. I'm glad I live in Queensland now where I can get a variety of colours for a reasonable (ish) price unlike new south Wales... Red and black will be the colour choice sometime soonish... Or perhaps black and gold hrmm..

It looks like it fits well.
I've not cut the outer part of the plastic off (I think you did?) but I've got an idea for a folded metal section that fits with how I've cut mine and is held on by using the indicators to hold it on the sides and an extra bolt at the rear that will be covered by the numberplate when it's all done.
