No fear of being anything like 8am.  Hopefully make it around 9 or more like 10am.  Talked with the missus about a brolly today but then promptly forgot about it.  Spent today at the coast and it was mid thirties.  When we arrived back this evening in Poitiers it was still showing 39°c......

That's nasty. Bad enough here in Poitiers in a top floor apartment without air-conditioning.  Picked up the rental car today and will be up early doors Sunday to get across to Magny Cours.  Had a language lesson from a fellow (local) beer drinker last night - It's apparently pronounced Manneeee coorrrr.

Robbi - you inspired me. The wife had a long weekend booked in Poitiers for our Anniversary.  Now amended with car hire and a Sunday ticket for WSBK.

Had a great time blasting the local(ish) roads today. A little bit busy around Ballater with the Highland games today but plenty good riding had anyway.

Replacement caliper seal kit arrived so swapped out the damaged / incorrect seals in the leaking L/H caliper.  Decided that it was a waste of time bleeding the caliper without checking the R/H caliper.  Whilst it wasn't leaking, it was every bit as poor with pistons the wrong way round, 1x sticking large piston and both the small piston dust seals destroyed.  Managed to cobble something almost perfect with the remaining good seals, reassembled with the pistons correctly oriented, bled the brakes and ordered a further full set for next time......have not looked yet but should probably check the rear caliper......

Had a fantastic run on Sunday over a great route but decided not to run it in the reverse direction as the clutch cable began to fray at the lever.  I adjusted it to get me home on a less bendy route.  Swapped out the cable today as I actually had a spare.
More problematic was the leak that had developed from the L/H front caliper.  I have had this bike for a couple of years and the chap I bought it from had changed the caliper pistons and seals just before I bought it.  Stripped out the pads and cleaned up the caliper, leaving it overnight connected to it's hose to see which piston was leaking and it was the inboard smaller one.   The first warning sign (other than the leak) was the fact that all four pistons were in the caliper back to front with the blank end bearing on the pad.  One dust deal had been guillotined with most of it inside the caliper.  Another one was folded over.  The leaking piston seal seemed to be far too large and must have been squeezed into its groove before the piston was forced through it.  Ordered up a new seal kit so should have it sorted for next weekend.
Strange thing was the brakes worked really well (far better than my GSXR) and it took a couple of years and a good few thousand miles before the shoddy work showed up.

General / Re: Insurance claim going to court
« on: 05 June 2023, 02:50:12 pm »
A few years ago I suffered a similar event.  It was a works van that ran into the back of me and I had left my phone at home so no means of getting a photo.   We exchanged details and the chap asked me to get a quote to repair my car.  I explained it would likely be at least a couple of grand but got a verbal quote the next day for £3k.  At this point he went quiet.  I claimed from my insurers who failed to get a response from his insurers. Eventually my insurers sold the claim onto a third party claims company who prepared the case to go to court.  At the 11th hour the chap and his boss (van owner) admitted liability and settled my insurers costs.  The process took more than a year but I came away without loss.

Ordered a replacement front tyre last week and spent the thicker end of 4 hours trying to spoon it into position yesterday evening. First thing this morning, I wrapped it in a tyre warmer to try and make it easier but to no avail and I conceded defeat.  Jumped in the car and took it to a local garage who had it over the rim literally within the minute.  I then tried to balance it on my newly purchased wheel balancer and after 30 minutes, concluded that the balancer shaft was ever so slightly out of true.  Rolled the shaft on a sheet of glass and it had a 1mm bend over its length.  A few pieces of wood and a deft thump with a persuader got it close to true hence a reasonable balance thereafter....
Hopefully get it scrubbed in over the next day or so weather dependent.

now the l/h fork seal is weeping.  Ordered up replacements and a seal driver.

Before you do that, have you checked that there might just be a bit of crud caught under the seal?

Yup - Run a piece of thin plastic up the inside of the seal.  It seemed very easy to get past the lip so I think the seal is worn anyway.

So I received the new fork seals, seal driver and headstock stand over the last week but as the good weather was forecast to break, I decided to go for a blast this afternoon instead.  It was a great run on some fun roads in the sunshine.  The previously weeping fork seal stanchion remained bone dry which was good news but I was struggling with "enthustiastic" cornering and kept on feeling the front very vague as if under inflated (which it is not) but flighty at greater corner speeds.  I initially put it down to the remaining salt and winter debris however, on inspection the right hand side of the front Angel GT is below the wear indicators - near bald on a line probably where the softer compound starts.  The profile is uneven also.  Still plenty on the centre and the LH side.  I favour right handers so I guess that makes sense and a lot of the "good" roads up here are resurfaced yearly with tar and chips leaving an extremely abrasive surface whilst providing poor grip levels.  I changed the rear less than 800 miles ago and it still looks great - should not have been so cheap and replaced the pair.....

First blast of the year in the sunshine this afternoon - Pretty good but still a lot of grit on some of the back roads to spoil the fun.  Bike ran perfectly after its hibernation but now the l/h fork seal is weeping.  Ordered up replacements and a seal driver.  I am away over the weekend but will get it changed out next week.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / FZ1S Gen 2 centre stand lever length
« on: 22 February 2023, 12:59:12 pm »
Hi - Can someone measure the foot lever on their Gen2 centre stand. I have one with the lever snapped off / missing and can weld something up but would like to get the right length first time.  It looks like 22mm tube with 2mm wall thickness so some 1/2" pipe will do the job - Thanks.

More than a little envious - The weather was great up my way too but unfortunatelly I had to waste it staining the timber windows  :'( .  Looked wistfully at the FZ1 in the garage each time I walked past........

Swapped out the LED headlight bulb for the original halogen and fitted a second exhaust baffle for her appointment with the MOT tester this evening.  All reverted back now with no advisories.

Out last night for a quick back road sortie detouring to a nearby town for fuel.  The one and only petrol station had diesel only :rolleyes .  I had to decide where to go next with the reserve counting up.  The next nearest town normally has two fuel stations (were five when I started riding in the 1980's) but one is closed for redevelopment.  Last week the remaining station had run out of diesel and my car was also on dregs so I was not confident but my choices were not good as the next town along is a good way out as was heading home.  Fortunately I filled her up with £25 of Shell V-Power and went on my merry way.
Tonight I fitted a new rear tyre.  It was not terribly worn but had squared off and felt terrible when gently tipping in.  First time I have ever used tyre irons and done it myself.  Interestingly enough the demarcation of the dual compound was pretty defined on the old tyre.  I also took a few readings with my durometer (hardness) tester which gave some interesting results.  Its probably all academic as it only really matters when at operating temperature but I would have expected the five year Angel GT to be harder than the 2022 tyre.....I also stuck it into my track bike Supercorsa SC2 rear just to compare.
Its fairly biblical weather here tonight so I will have to wait for a better day to scrub it in.

I've not dropped every bike that I have ever owned - just nearly all.
Current FZ1 took a fall in the garage a few months ago when I was taking it off the rear paddock stand and forgot to put the side stand down.  It was ok though, my car caught the handle bar and prevented damage to the bike......
