Oil from crankcase smells a bit petrol'y!

Well im certainly racking up the posts after my recent crash, here is my latest query to the fazer help desk:-


Was gonna take off the crankcase cover to sand it down.anyway it wasnt budging & before i got physical a drip of oil came out, so naturally i sniffed it & it had quite a whiff of petrol to it.i mean it defo doesnt smell like the fresh oil anyway but is this normal after being run through a bike for a while?


My question is, when i crashed could fuel have somehow mixed with the oil & if so i take it an oil change is in order???, i put a k&n oil filter on it at the start of summer, should i change it also???


When i crashed, by the time i got up & went to the bike it wasnt running so must have cut out pretty quickly.


I have started the bike up since on the driveway & it started & ran just fine.

Not sure about the petrol but it daoesnt matter if the bikes running or not- if its been on its side for the slightest bit of time chances are oil has made its way into the airbox and filter, k and n can be cleaned and 'recharged' (oiled) that's the joy of them and why overall they save you money.
Recharge kits can be bought online or halfords!

Is there any sign of the oil emulsifying? Some people reckon that coolant and oil smells quite like petrol once it has been blended by the engine.The bike would have cut out when on it's side, it has a tilt sensor for that purpose.

I'm curious, how does engine oil manage to make its way from the sump, to the top of the engine, back through the carbs and in to the airbox?

I hadnt thought about the air filter but yes it is a K&N so im glad it'll just need a clean if affected.


Fazerider - the oil seemed fine, it still felt as it should & was crystal clear & was a pain in the arse to wash off my finger.

Engine oil isn't overly expensive (in comparison to an engine strip etc) so if you do question it, it might be worth doing an oil change for peace of mind - the bike certainly won't mind

Yeah i think thats in order really,


But the k& n's are supposed to last a couple of changes so i might leave it on for all, nah actually foc it if a jobs worth doing n all that, oil & filter but still interested to hear what it could be, if anything.

I wouldn't expect an air filter to have any issues after a crash unless the bike was particularly damaged or their were fluids spilt...

A quick inspection should tell you all you need to know K&N should last 50,000 miles before it needs a cleaning and if you put it in at the beginning of summer then it's probably still like new in there

Sorry dead eye i was on about the k&n oil filter,


I was thinking of being lazy & just doing the oil, but i suppose there'll still be some contaminated oil in the filter so ill replace it also.

That'll be my bad, anyone mentions k&n and I automatically think of air filters, not oil filters.
Oil filters get thrown away like the others, sorry to confuse matters.

The numerous times I've either dropped my bike or been knocked off it the air box ends up with oil in it, I blame gravity not only for dropping the bike but also the reason oil ends up in the air box when the bikes on its side!

Did the engine flood from the drop? How long was it on it's side? I think if it floods the petrol can leak down from the cylinder into the crankcase.

Was talking to an old guru who said that could be the case Dude.he was a bit old school & reckoned any fuel would soon evaporate even inside the engine as such a small quantity?.


Im thinking by the time i got up, checked myself over, got to the bike etc it was prob about 3-4 minutes until it was upright again.


It then sat upright for about 48 hrs before i attempted to start it up & it just started fine as normal.

Probably would be ok after only 3 minutes but it's up to you

If the bikes been on its side with the ignition on, the pump will still run.


However the floats in the carbs won't shut off the petrol because gravity doesn't work horizontally.


The pump will continue to fill the carbs and this can run down the inlet manifold past any open valves and into the cylinder.


It will then drain past the pistons and into the oil.


I recommend you change the oil.

Yeah it seems the gen that it would probably be ok....but its better safe than sorry, so ill change it.


Wont do the bike any harm & it deserves a treat after all the abuse it has had.
