Title: Destinkification of Leather Jacket
Post by: andybesy on 20 July 2013, 11:34:47 pm
Hello Folks,

Have recently acquired a vintage 1980's style leather jacket second hand. Very cool, looks the business.

But it's my first leathers, and so I could with some advice.

How do I got about cleaning it when it gets stinky?

It's real (black) leather on the outside, pretty thick and heavy.

On the inside it has a thin fabric lining which is not removable, sewn in, and there's fairly substantial padding in key areas. Only thing I can remove is padding from back.

Dry clean? Anti bacterial spray? Hand wash? Seems way too heavy for washing machine.

And once it's clean do I need to treat it with anything to restore the leather?

Any advice appreciated, as always.

Thanks, Andy

steam cleaner would be ideal, cheap handheld ones are available now and clean well.

alternatively, dry cleaning may be a viable option (depending on the style etc)

I don't think dry cleaning or full immersion in water is a good idea. You can get proper leather cleaners for the leather itself. To keep the leather supple, again you can get proper leather treatments, or, a little tip - Neats foot oil, available from , erm, what do you call the places that do all the bridle stuff for horses? Those places, anyway, looks after leather a treat. Hmm, not sure about the liner, yes, perhaps a suitable anti-bacterial spray as you said.

Don't put leather into the washing machine, it will make it dry out and crack! If it gets really bad, go to a specialist leather cleaner, anything else risks buggering it up completely.

I agree with nick crisp about Neats foot oil, also there's stuff called Leather Food which will keep it in good condition.

If it starts smelling mouldy, buy some 99% isopropyl alcohol, mix it 50/50 with water in a spray bottle, then spray it inside and out and let it air dry which should deal with the mould.

I also use some stuff called Mr Jojo on my leather jacket which conditions it and helps keep it waterproofed, although probably no leather jacket will ever be guaranteed to be 100% waterproof, it will eventually absorb moisture if there's enough of it.

If (when) it does get wet, hang it up from a shaped hanger somewhere where it will get a cool air stream over it (not hot air or over a radiator as that will dry it too fast) and let it dry slowly, then re-condition it.

Andy,  I was going to give you some advice but Grahamm (http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=14)  beat me to it  :lol . I do more or let exactly the same as him. DO NOT soak the leather, it will destroy it. DO NOT dry clean it either. I had my WOLF jacket in my topbox when a beer opened on it. I contacted WOLF and they told me how to clean it, and they said the DO NOT's I have mentioned. Some anti bac inside, along with a pack of baby wipes and some freebreeze to freshen it up. Again, don't soak it. And treat the leather, not just as a one off. I find 1-2 times a year is fine, depending on frequency of use.

Thanks all, good advice, appreciated as always.

Heading out now to pickup some anti-bacterial spray and fabreeze to start with.

And will keep my eyes out for some leather cleaner/conditioner/waterproofer.
