General / Riding after a stroke
« on: 15 June 2022, 10:35:35 am »
I had a stroke on on 4th June, and now I'm out of hospital, I'm in the process of notifying my insurance provider and starting rehab, with all the concerns about how life-changing this is going to be.
Has anyone else any experience of riding after a stroke?  Particularly the attitude of insurerers.
Any help much appreciated!

General / Selling a bike - chancers and time wasters
« on: 03 May 2021, 04:54:05 pm »
Is it just me or have others had this?

I put the Gen1 on the market a couple of weeks ago and I've had nothing but chancers offering well below the asking price and expecting me to deliver it to locations miles away, or time wasters who make reasonable offers, but then don't seem to be able to come up with the money and just disappear.

I'm in the fortunate position that I don't have to sell the bike, but I don't like the idea of it just sitting in the garage.

Is this a common experience?

For Sale & Wanted / FOR SALE: 2004 (54), Fazer 1000, SOLD
« on: 08 March 2021, 11:58:19 am »
My much-loved US-spec Fazer 1000 is for sale. I've only done about 1500 miles in the last 2 years, so the bike's not getting used and I'm hoping somebody will get as much enjoyment out of it as I have in the last 10 years of ownership.

2004, 52k, colour is DPBMC, Northampton/Wellingborough, £1750

Non-standard specs:

  • Ivan’s full monty (by Mike)
  • K&N Air filter
  • MIVV carbon can with Homologation Cert.
  • Renthal 758 bars
  • ASV levers
  • Braided lines front & rear
  • Maxton fork spring, recent new bushes and seals
  • Overhauled rear shock with Hyperpro spring
  • Gilles rear-sets
  • Colour-matched powder coated wheels
  • Stainless radiator guard
  • Colour-matched side panels and radiator sides
  • Belly pan
  • LED ‘flowing’ indicators, indicator relay replaced.
  • LED rear light
  • LED clock bulbs
  • Lots of stainless/titanium/aluminium bolts
  • Street-fighter, standard & Zero Gravity DB screens
Comes with lots of original parts including centre stand, indicators, can, rear light, footrests. The bike is in VGC for age and mileage and runs and rides very well. The only downer is an intermittent fault to the fuel gauge.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Fuel gauge issue
« on: 05 November 2020, 04:20:27 pm »
When I start my '04 Gen 1 from cold the fuel gauge acts normally, gently rising and staying stable barring the usual slight movements when accelerating/decelerating.

After a few miles, however, the needle starts to flap around from full to empty and all points between, as if there's no damping.

As the gauge and sender seem to be OK on startup I suspect the wires between, but I've cleaned all the connectors to no effect.

Anyone had similar problems, or any ideas for a solution?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / 50000 miles up, here's to the next 50000!
« on: 14 February 2019, 03:40:37 pm »
The clock's just gone over 50000, most of it done by me in the 7-8 years I've had the bike. So that, as mentioned elsewhere, makes my Fazer pretty much worthless. It seems that, no matter how well it runs or how well it's maintained, most buyers are petrified of perceived high milages, even though it only works out at a bit over 3000 miles a year.

Well, more fool them! I've yet to see a bike that will do all the things I want it to with ease and in comfort, so I've no plans to change and I'm looking forward to the next 50000 on the Fazer.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Gilles Rearsets: Brake lever return
« on: 27 November 2018, 12:34:56 pm »
Finally got round to fitting the Gilles rearsets I bought from Fazed Out a couple of months ago, all fine and dandy. However there is no return spring on the brake lever, unlike the standard pegs or the LSL rearsets I had before.

This means that the lever doesn't return to its original position after braking, meaning the pads drag on the disc and the brake light stays on.

There is no spring shown on the parts list and nowhere to fit one anyway.

Has anyone who has fitted Gilles noticed this problem on their set-up and is there a simple solution? Or, failing that, a complicated one, otherwise they'd be an MOT fail for having the brake light on all the time.

FZS600 Fazer / WP51 SWY 10 years gone
« on: 07 July 2018, 10:36:58 pm »
10 years ago tomorrow I PX'd my Fazer 600 against a CB1000R, something I've regreted ever since!

The Honda lasted 3 years before it was exchanged for a Fazer 1000 which I've still got, the longest I've ever kept a bike, taking over from the 600.

I'd love to know what's happened to my old 600, it looks like it's been on SORN since last summer, anyone on here got it?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Lucky to get away with this one!
« on: 23 March 2018, 07:48:39 pm »
A lorry reversed into me while I was stopped behind him. Luckily I was square on behind him, so he pushed me backwards rather than over, so no damage to me, but the bike needs work! One tiny mark on the back of the truck was all he had to show for it!
Waiting to hear from the company who own the truck to see what they want to do, but would the concensus on here be to go straight through my insurers or see if they want to pay me out?
I'll strip it down over the weekend to see if the fairing framework is damaged, but it's at least new fairing and inners, headlight unit and screen.

For Sale & Wanted / Wanted: Gen1 Fazer 1000 top yoke
« on: 29 September 2017, 11:24:14 pm »
A sheared bolt that I don't think I'm going to be able to get out means the bike's off the road until I can replace the top yoke.

Hoping that someone who's done a USD conversion has a top yoke going spare!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / R&G Shocktube?
« on: 05 July 2016, 07:20:57 pm »
I've got to replace the spring on the rear shock, years of year-round riding have caused the powdercoating on the spring to flake off and it's starting to rot.

So, the question is: does the shocktube (or similar) provide decent protection without causing the shock to overheat or cause any other problems? I'm not keen on huggers, but it looks as though its got to be one or the other.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Rear wheel bearings
« on: 30 August 2014, 10:37:12 pm »
Got an MOT advisory that the rear wheel bearings are on their way out. As they were replaced within the last year, when I had the wheels powdercoated, I can't say I'm impressed with OE, so has anyone got any recommendations? Bikebearings.co.uk or Wemoto are top of the list at the moment, from what I can find searching on here.

I also see that some people have had problems getting one of the bearings out, any good tips, especially as I haven't got a garage or shed to work in.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Motorcycle Direct insurance renewal
« on: 28 June 2014, 09:41:54 am »
I know it's been said a thousand times or more, but don't ever just accept your insurance renewal quote without checking the competition!

My insurance is due in a couple of weeks and I hadn't even opened the letter from Motorcycle Direct when I got a phone call from them. The cost had increased by over 50% despite the Gen1, and me, being a year older and no claims or convictions for another year. All they would say was "London postcode and no garage, it's the best we can do".

A check on Compare the Meerkat revealed not only that I could get a better deal from plenty of other companies, but that I could get a better deal from THEM as a new customer, rather than renewing!

I've saved nearly £200 by changing to Bennetts, who I always thought were expensive, and phoned Motorcycle Direct to tell them they'd lost my business. To be fair, the woman I spoke to tried to get their underwriters to see why there was such a difference, but it seems to me that they just aren't trying very hard to keep business.

With all the comparison sites around, there's no excuse for not checking out your options, and, if everyone does it, we may see brokers actually doing some work to find us the best deals. My grandson also gets a meerkat toy, so that's a result too!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Short screen fitted
« on: 14 January 2014, 10:32:17 pm »
For those who are of shorter stature than some on here, or who can't live with the barn door-sized abominations that some like, here's my suggestion:

Take a double bubble screen of unknown manufacture (Cheers, seangee!), a can of Poundland matt black spray paint, a dremmel and a bit of screen trim. Mark and cut the screen so it lines up with the fairing, spray the inside matt black, fit the screen trim, and there you have it.

I'm 5'6" and it provides perfectly good protection for me.

The only problem now is that the mirrors look out of proportion, so I may have to look at bar-ends. Anyone know of decent looking blanking plates for the mirror holes in the fairing?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Servicing/tyres
« on: 07 July 2013, 05:20:30 pm »
As the bike's due for it's MOT, I thought I'd get the Zeus Motorcycles to do a bit of servicing work at the same time, to save me wasting the decent weather.
Their response was "why do you want to change the fork oil if the seals aren't blown", and "we don't do carb balancing" I didn't even bother to mention the EXUP valve, I doubt they'd even know what it was!
So, having given up on them I thought I'd try my nearest Yam dealer, Woodford Motorcycles. Their response was "we don't like working on bikes more than about  5 years old, try somewhere else".
Now, maybe it's just my imagination, but I thought firms wanted business in a recession, but it would seem these don't!
Checked the bike over to take it for it's MOT yesterday and found an indicator not working. Not to worry, I bought spares when HG went into adminidstration last year.... except I've put them somewhere safe, so I'll never see them again! Spent yesterday sorting the wiring out and it's all working again, so MOT next week instead, and I'll get myself a Carbtune and do the other work myself.
The final issue came today, when I noticed the front tyre didn't look quite right. On closed inspection, there's a definite ridge developing just off the centre line. I've read that this has happened with Avons in the past, but these are Bridgestone BT023s.
So, finally, the questions: does anyone know of a trustworthy dealership/workshop in the Leyton/Walthamstow/Woodford area of London, and has anyone had a ridge develop on Bridgestone tyres before?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / It's not meant to do that... is it?
« on: 03 May 2012, 04:33:35 pm »
Just had my 54 plate Gen1 MOT'd and, apart from an iffy horn, now replaced, no problems from the tester.
I did notice, however, that when he was trying the horn, the brake light came on. This is not something I've come across before, but, as the tester wasn't bothered, should I be? Anyone else had this happen and is it a sign of impending disaster or something I can safely ignore?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / 30K Service
« on: 11 November 2011, 11:17:45 pm »
My gen1 has just got to 30000 miles, so time for the first service I'll have done on it. A couple of questions for those who've worked on these before;
1. does the oil filter come out easily without removing downpipes? I presume it does, but it looks pretty tight for space.
2. any particular oil recommended, or any of the usual suspects OK?
3. I've never bothered with iridium plugs before, but does anyone else? Are they worth the extra?
Thanks in advance.
