Best wiring points for iPhone
« on: 31 July 2012, 10:04:00 am »
Morning,

My current thinking (no pun intended) is this..

iPhone to normal USB cable, USB cable to USB cigarette lighter adapter (5V output), this then goes into the Cigarette lighter socket (12V).

The -ve I'm thinking GND of the battery but where's the best place for the +ve?  I thought either the +ve side of the Headlight fuse or the Ignition fuse, I only want power to the cable when the key is turned after all.

Any ideas, recommendations, personal experience?  I'm a complete beginner when it comes to bike wiring so a comment like "just wire it into the starter relay" will get the same comprehension from me as it would do from my cat... :lol

Why not just take positive and negative from battery then you can charge phone etc without ignition on?

'cos sometimes I won't use the bike for a couple of weeks and don't want the circuit drawing any power whatsoever.  I just thought it would be easier to wire it into a switched circuit to be safe.

I have two wired in this way, one on the fairing inner panel and one under the seat where I leave a sat nav cable ready to connect. No problems found with discharging.

I bought this and would recommend it. Fit the control box under the seat and switch off when not in use.

Also bought their iphone mount, again would recommend

Well I didn't know these things existed until a few hours ago, maybe it'll help someone else looking to add another circuit.  I'll tap off from the existing heated handgrip fuse which is on the Ignition circuit.  20 min job and under £5 spent in total for the tap, 12V female lighter socket and USB cigarette lighter plug.  Result!
