For Sale & Wanted / Looking for an 04 Gen 1 Thou centre stand
« on: 08 April 2018, 10:33:17 am »
Passed MOT with flying colours, but tester noticed a crack in my centrestand at the lower brace joint. It's only a small crack on a bit of a rusty spot and could be welded up - but I'd prefer to fit one in better nick.

I blame the shorter dog bones...

I'm in S Lincs, but can arrange collection as ness.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Falling In Love Again
« on: 05 March 2018, 04:27:16 pm »
Spring is here, the deer are back in the garden scrounging, the air is filled with the sound of baby spadgers squawking for their grub and now the snow has buggered off it was time for my first ride of the year, with my MOT up next week.

Have to say, I had been dreading it (due to age and infirmity taking a grip over winter - the first winter that I didn't even sit on my bike, let alone move it) but once I got over the shock of the freezing tank on my knackers, that huge grin reappeared. It's funny, I keep pondering selling the Fazer, due to aforementioned age and condition (mine, not the bike...) but every time I go for a buzz I just wonder how I could be so stupid as to even consider it.

It's the only bike I've had, where I haven't been wondering how any other bike would be, or yearning after some younger, sexier bit of kit - because there isn't anything sexier than Felicity (my Fazer....). If you ever played Elite: Dangerous (I play it in Virtual Reality and it is gobsmacking) you will know Felicity Farseer, the engineering expert for engines, powerplants and frameshift drives (for warp jumps). Very suitable, I thought.

Unfortunately, there was still a lot of sludge and salt around the roads and the traffic was spraying it all over Felicity - so a very enjoyable ride ended with a back-aching scrub and polish.

This machine is 14 years old - 14! Yet not a single hiccup, from twist of the key to jacking the stand. Yeah, I'm definitely in love all over again.

I wish you all a very happy year on your Fazers - it's time to start your engines  :D

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Save with luggage from Europe
« on: 22 September 2015, 03:13:21 pm »
I originally ordered my first bits hard luggage (NADSA/SHAD) from the UK supplier. It took about 2 months to arrive and didn't fit 2 full-face helmets, as had been claimed.

So I needed to get a bigger box and use the smaller ones as panniers instead.

I got a 49 litre SHAD top box for £110 from Germany, all-inclusive. The standard UK price was £180 - but I see Suttons have reduced to £120 on Amazon, which is still more, though.

I bought my full fitting kit from France for £25 less than the UK price, too, even after adding the 20 Euro delivery charge. Granted, I had to exchange the 10W indicator bulbs for 21W jobs, but at £1.88 each from Wemoto, I wasn't complaining.
I paid both with Paypal, so I knew my money was safe, and both company's customer service was excellent and friendly when I had questions. Oh - and they both got here within a week of ordering.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Ivan's jet kit
« on: 21 September 2015, 02:43:50 pm »
Hi guys

Is there any way I can tell if my bike has been fitted with the Ivan's kit without pulling the carbs off?

Be a bit silly to buy the kit if it's already got it fitted (I only wonder because the midrange is already very strong, so...)

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Clocks
« on: 02 September 2015, 01:59:10 pm »
Anyone know how much of a bind it is to remove the instrument glass?

All of mine have been crappy since I bought it. I can still read the things just fine, but they look shoddy, so would be nice to get them replaced or cleaned. I think the mess is on the inside because nothing I do has any effect on the outside. I can't imagine how they got so bad in the first place.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Battery power
« on: 16 May 2015, 06:50:27 pm »
Since I first started up my Fazer, it has been a bit of a bugger to spark up. Once it's warm it's not an issue.

Today, after just two (!) short attempts, the battery died. I couldn't push start it (though I did try, several times) so I got a lift down town.

When I got back, it sprang to life first time.

When the missus got home, we went out and.... died first time!  It started after just a few seconds 'jumped' to my GPZ.

Just wondering if the batteries are prone to buggeration. Should I get a beefier one, or is it just that it's 11 years old, and the seller was a lying toerag when he said it was well looked after?

I had a long-ish ride yesterday, so it should have been fine.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Funny sound at over 20mph
« on: 12 May 2015, 07:10:44 pm »
I'm very happy with my Fazer Thou, but one thing that's annoying me is a strange "nuts and bolts swirling in a bucket" type sound when I'm riding.

At very low speeds it disappears, but from around 20mph it starts and gets a bit louder as the speed increases. It seems pretty loud to me when there's no wind - though a windy day will drown out the noise.

I took it to a mate who is a very experienced professional and his first though echoed mine - wheel bearings. But he checked twice and they seem fine. It doesn't seem to be engine/box related either. I thought it may have been the airflow over the screen but it isn't. Nor airflow around the radiator protector.

We are really puzzled. I thought it may be the clutch, as it makes a similar, if quieter, sound when dropped into neautral at a standstill. My educated friend discounted that, though.

The bike is performing very well and I have zero complaints about anything else on it - the handling is fine and it certainly shows the requisite power on tap.

Suggestions gratefully received.

For Sale & Wanted / Wanted - Rack for '04 Fazer 1000
« on: 12 May 2015, 01:31:56 pm »
I've ordered a full hard set for my bike, but there's some delay in delivery from the factory and could take weeks, so I'm after a simple baggage rack for in the meantime, that I can put my old, small box onto.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Unknown extra bitz
« on: 05 May 2015, 09:22:52 am »
Hulloo

I bought this '04 Fazer at the weekend. the chap had only had it a month - said he bought it from a workmate who'd used it for touring holidays round Europe and he didn't seem to know anything about it at all. There was only the two keys, V5 and MOT certificates, too.

It has some extras - goodridge braided hoses, a hugger, a tall tinted 'race' screen and he said the seat was a custom job. It is different from the one on the '04 bike I test rode last year, but there is no manufacturer marking on it at all.

It also looks like the damper/shock absorber is an aftermarket job. Again, can't see any make info on it. I took some photos and I'd be grateful if anyone can identify them - especially the damper. the ride is certainly very comfortable - bumps are made very soft and it's a comfy ride, but the steering is a bit on the slow side (forks might be modded, but no idea, tbh).

Very well protected by the nice looking hugger:

This is the 'custom' seat:

These extras do make it more of a mystery to me, that I only had to shell out £1750 for the bike (£1795 asking price). I know he wanted a quick sale, but I must admit, it does make me worry a little that there's something not right.

Introduction / Yammy!
« on: 29 April 2015, 04:38:53 pm »
Hulloo chasps, JD here, known around about as Brixmis (or Brix for lazy sods like me).

I have a confession to make - I haven't got my Fazer Thou as yet - I'm testing one on Saturday and barring anything nasty wrong with it, I'll be riding it home.  :)

I've had all sorts of stuff - did my test on a TZR125 - the only other Yam I've had, though I did have a DT as a courtesy bike once, and it spent 90% of it's time with me at the local dirt track  :lol . Well, when in Rome...

I had a Tiger 900 until 2006 - best bike I've owned and I had it for 5 years, which is unheard of for me. However, I'm disabled and I got so bad that I had to sell it and thought my biking days were over.

In 2012 I was put onto morphine and the pain went away and I turned back to two wheels. As the missus refused point blank to get on anything sporty, I got a big-bore scooter, followed by a GPZ500S, which I'd had in the past and knew she liked. I've had that nearly two years now, and last year I went to test a Triumph Trophy at Webbs of Eye/Peterbohorror. Turned out the swingarm was cracked, but I spotted a 2004 Fazer Thou there and asked to test ride that instead.

Best ride I've ever had. Bar none! I honestly thought the Tiger was the comfiest, best all-round bike in existence, but I reckon the Fazer Thou has it beat hands down. What an amazing experience that test ride was - all 3 hours of it. My bum/back/knees felt like I'd just been down the shops on it. Even the missus is impressed! We've sold the car and I will be getting myself a Fazer Thou. If the one I'm testing on Saturday falls through, there are plenty of others around.

See how you can do it, if you're really sneaky.... Scooter=GPZ=Fazer Thou and what car?  They just think they are cleverer than us!  :lol

Sorry about the life story - I never know what to put in these introduction threads.  :o
