Title: Supermarket Parking
Post by: VNA - BMW Wank on 27 June 2014, 08:21:30 pm
Just wondering if anybody else has had issues parking at a supermarket or any views on supermarket parking.
Had the old Fazer oot fae a wee run last Saturday, popped doon tae the Mull of Galloway.  Had a late lunch but was feeling hungry on the ride hame.  So stopped at the new Sainsbury's in Irvine to buy some scran fae ma din dins.
Looked around for bike bays - none - car park was quiet but I still don't like parking in car bays.  So I find a quiet spot on a walk way stuffing it neatly behind an advert sign on said walkway.
I only just get in the store when some busy body jobs worth supervisor is on me.  I won't bore you with the full conversation, but I do ask her several times if they have bike bays, why do they not have bike bays, and explain that if they don't have bike bays bikers  will park their bikes anywhere they can (in my opinion) out of the road of cars rather than risk having their bike knocked over by a car.
I didn't get through to her.  But didn't move the bike either.  Won't rush back there.
Anyway I've only once before had an issue parking at a supermarket.  If there are good motorcycle bays I use em, failing that I often park with the cyclists (if there are pedal bike bays) or anywhere out of the road.

The problem is to be aware that some supermarket car parks are run by car park (crook) companies who will issue you with a fake parking charge for parking out of a marked bay, not me or a bike but I know someone who has.

The road layout in a car park is covered mostly by the road traffic act, not sure about the pavement and walkway areas.
I got summoned back to my bike via the pa when I did the same thing at Freeport, Fleetwood. The thick-as-Shit security guards tried bullying me into moving my bike, or it would be towed. I just laughed and said "try it". They have Bugger all powers to do that.

He did make a point though, he said about toddlers maybe burning themselves on the hot bike parts, someone would be to blame, and it would be me as its not in the car park. Just another thought......

My local Asda doesn't have a bike parking bay, but there's a piece of flat paving (ie no kerb) where there are rails to lock pushbikes to and any bikers tend to park up there. I've never had a problem with anyone complaining.

+1
I do use car bays occasionally though, I just park the bike in centre and near to the bays entrance so can be seen by drivers before attempting to park over it.
Park in the mother toddler bay would be even better and could save a child from burnt hands by denying the parents a parking space ;)

Park your bike near the toddler rides and leave the hazards on and put a hat on the floor... Then you'll avoid a ticket and make a few quid by the time you get back :-)

Car exhausts get hot as well, he was talking absolute bollox!
Stick the bike bang in the middle  of a car space, and if anyone whinges tell them to foc off.
Avoid pavements and "quiet spots" as it gives them a tiny bit of leverage because there's no real excuse to park there, just be bold and use a normal slot.
In reality they are "parking spaces" rather than "car parking spaces" unless otherwise described, ie: disabled bays.
Having motorbike bays is normally just an afterthought to keep bikes together, and out of the way.
A bit like ordering 20 crates of beer for the lads, then chucking in a bottle of sherry for the ladies.  :b

Yup, I park right outside the doors on the rare occasion I go to one. And parents should be teaching their kids not to go anywhere near somebody else's motorbike, let alone touch it. Years back I had somebody damage my van in a car park and there was nothing I could do because it was classed as private land, insurance was null and void. I don't know if that's still the case, but I ain't risking it either way. And that was back when people had smaller motors..today loads of shoppers/women drive bloody great range rovers and such like, even more chance they ain't gonna see your bike when their trying to park the behemoth..

At my local supermarket I park next to the pedal bike bays.
Only once did I have a problem.  A new trolley attendant told me I'd have to move my bike.  Well he regretted and never bothered me again.

I try to avoid parking with cars whenever I can, sure it's not always possible, but all you need is somebody to give your bike a wee nudge, over it goes, and they sod off.

Supermarkets are notorious for bumps and scrapes.

Ditto parking behind a van anywhere mate, just to easy for them to jump in without seeing your bike, check the mirrors, see bugger all and stick it in reverse..

at the local morrisons (Waterlooville) there is a big paved area that most bikers use! no problems with that
and at the Tesco extra ( or Big tesco's as its also known as) in Pool they have big area for bikes outside the Cafe!!

or if it is raining I use one of the little shelters that they have dotted around the car parks lol but often find myself blocked in by trolly's  :rollin :rollin
