best tyres for fzs 600 in winter
« on: 04 November 2013, 10:30:42 pm »
I have a set of avon storm tyres on my recently purchased fzs 600. they have worn unevenly front and rear. when i picked up bike it had 12 psi front and 17 psi rear. The rear has squared off even though there is loads of life in the tyre and the front has worn correctly, as in more worn in centre than sides but feels bumpy running my hand front to back. Has anyone else used avon storms? Whats the tyre of choice for crap weather for the fazer?
If it's broken, it's not fixed.

T30 has way surpassed my expectations in the wet, bit pricey though, but really worth the confidence to be truthful.

Im with the bt 023's too. Not run them on a fazer yet but on every other bike ive run theyve been fautless. Great grip levels and last really well too. Did thr ron haslam race school back in June and  they use the new t 30's which are amazing but then they used 023's before them. It's your money but the 023's are superb.

+1 for Michelin Pilot Road 3's. Great Grip and longevity.

I had a set of Avon Storm 2 Ultra on which I was very happy with and still had plenty of tread left after 8k miles. But then the rear let me down in the middle of France. I had tyre sealant stuff in which probably stopped a rapid deflation, but in one place fine wires in the casing where sticking through on the inside so a get me home repair was not possible. Kind of put me off the Avons, but to be fair I suppose I must have run over some object without noticing it? Hobson's choice at the time was to replace it with a Metzeler  Z6, which I am also happy with. Avon still on the front with even wear and still plenty of tread.

Have used BTO23  which is a good tyre IMO however "Rhonnda Red" came shod with Pilot Road 3s-wont be going back to 023s!-outstanding wet grip from the Michelins!

pr3s for me. used to have bt023s which were fine but the michelins are superior (and more expensive!)
t30s should be better.

I use conti motion on the work bike and still can't outride the rubber in the wet. I do have ABS tho which is a godsend in the wet.
Just flapping about on this stagnant little pond on the outer rim of the internet.....yup....  :-))

I'm keen to try the pr3's but have been put off by Michelins. Reason being that I used to ride a courier company bike shod with the original pilot roads. In about 150000 miles of using them I must have had about 15 punctures...even got 3 in a week once. Now whether that's just bad luck in about 100000 miles of using 023's I haven't had a single one !!! Hope I haven't just jinxed myself  :'(

I know I'm going to get a slagging off from the 'non believers', but I've used Maxxix supermax for the last couple of years on my 600, and they've been good enough for my 10k/year commuting in all weathers on everything from B roads to motorway. And I don't hang about! :rolleyes
I even use Maxxis diamonds on my FZ1 now I trust them that much.
Stop polishing it and ride the bloody thing!!

I think with tyres people generally stick with what they know best. Its a personal preference based on good or bad experiences. As a certain plonker of a fashion expert says... "It's all about the confidence"  :)

I'm on Metzeler Z6's front and rear which so far I'm pretty happy with.

Already the front feels a lot more 'reliable' leaned over in the wet than the ME Z4's that were on the bike when I got it.

Also the front had a 120/60 instead of the Yamaha recommended 110/70 which I have now fitted. Could be placebo but it feels like before the tyre was too 'pointy' on account of being squeezed into the narrower rim. So it felt sketchy on the lean. Now seems much more predictable as the angle gets steeper. But the Z4's are older than the hills, so could just be a better tyre!!

for the next set I'm torn between trying the Maxxis's's's or the PR3's. I guess it'll depend on my bank account!

Metzelers and Maxxis are the only tyres I can't comment on, I'm a sucker for trying new things but at the moment for me nothing beats the PR3's for road riding, only on track will they show any weakness!

Got a new T30 on the front (16000 miles on the previous BT23) and it feels planted, nice feedback in the wet and find myself going quicker round bends in the wet.

Got a 23 with 12000 miles on the back and NEVER had an issue with giving it the beans out of wet corners.

I have just the rear T30 and it sticks like glue in the wet, i'm very impressed with it.

It seems like there are lots of us that are happy with our tyres, but that kinda makes sense as you want to tell yourself that it was money well spent while you've still got them.

So how about a list of the worst tyres for an fZS600 in the winter / wet? Ones that you'd never buy again even if they were cheaper than a set of Nangkong Ditch Destroyers!

It's probably true to say that all tyres are mostly good today, can't think of any horror stories from the major tyre manufacturers, anyone know of any really dodgy ones?
