Title: Fzs600 self destruct
Post by: spider on 31 January 2019, 02:12:27 pm
When I lived 60 miles away. The guy who serviced my bike said brilliant bike the Fazer 600. There is only one thing wrong. In the engine one bit self destructs. 10 years later it's still going strong. But what bit fails, falls apart. Or makes the price of a new engine pointless? Revs motorcycle shop Haywards heath. Called Rob. Great bloke new his stuff

Well, the original nut that holds the drive sprocket on isn’t up to the job, but once it’s replaced with the new, thicker nut it’s reliable enough.
The gearshift mechanism is prone to wear which means false neutrals when you’re expecting second gear, but that usually only makes itself a nuisance at moderately high milage (80,000+ in my experience).
Other than that, it’s a gem IMHO.

As above... plus the exhaust studs are a joke.  :)

Yep. We’re all pretty biased here of course but it’s a fab bike. I could trade it in for something more ‘modern’ but why would I bother when it sits outside under a cover for 6 months a year. I also like fixing it up, new brake lines and I might get the seat recovered this year, all for pocket money really while my mates have a brand new MT10 and a newer Ninja.

My only worry is that in the near future emissions regulations will make it unroadworthy and I will have to get something else. As far as I know no other bike has such a popular following or online community.

I am not biased but I have no experience in the sturdiness of the engine as my 20 year old bike has only done 22k but there are others on here who's bikes are well into the 80s plus mileage. And after being on this forum for years I have never heard anyone say their engine has self destructed.

My experience with the Fazer engine is good.

Bought mine new in 2001.
It's now got 97,000 miles on the clock.
Still runs well, and I've never bothered adjusting valve shims or changing the cam chain.....  I checked the valve clearances at around 35,000 miles, they were fine, so I screwed the cam cover back down and just kept on riding it.

The bikes been run on fully synthetic all its life, and I've added ZX1 oil treatment a couple of times......  I've never had to touch the engine, although I guess it must be wearing out.... pretty much like the rider really.
