Title: Has anyone tried swapping fork internals from a thundercat?
Post by: greenman on 02 April 2015, 10:39:35 pm
Do any of you knowledgeable focers know if the internals of the thundercat forks would fit in fazer forks? If I could get hold of a pair could I strip them and swap so I can keep fork sliders, wheel and Speedo drive but giving me adjustability.

Never got around to trying it myself, but thought it was possible.  As stated, the Thundercat forks are longer than the FZS600's, meaning the internals are too.

You could in theory make a hybrid fork from the T'cat lower and FZS upper stanchion. Then cut down the top of the T'cat inners by the required amount and refit. Not sure how similar the positioning of the inner stanchion teflon bushes are compared to one another. I suppose really the fork would be primarily T'cat, just reduced length-wise. But unless you make up several mudguard adapters, you would also in turn have to use the T'cat mudguard, which might(?) in turn space the forks out wider than the Fazer's, meaning T'cat yokes might also be required.... so you could end up with a T'cat front end anyway  :lol

I've found a cheep set of tcat forks so I might just have ago, stanchions are in poor condition but bottoms are ok and hopefully the internals aswell. If I do go for it I'll let you all know how I get on.

It's a lot more work that way than just swapping for a thundercat front end tbh!
I appreciate cost maybe a thing (can be done with fazer wheel but you'd want the T'cat wheel too for the 120 tyre) but the amount you'll be faffing about with current idea its just not worth it!

The more I look in to this the more it looks like a whole lot of work. Maybe emulators are the way to go.

I've got both. It doesn't work, tried it and it just don't work. For starters the bottom bolt on the fazer is tiny compared to the cats so you'd end up with bits of this and bits of that so not just as easy as tcat bottoms fazer tops. Even just using the tcats fork caps as fancy preloads isn't too good because there's too much preload even when they are unwound! Save your money and improve the fazers internals...

Nope, the moulding on the left leg is virtually identical for the fazer speed sensor to fit into! :D
