Unexpected warning lights
« on: 29 September 2013, 11:32:40 pm »
I will explain what's happening....

I start the bike with the headlight on (low), then I switch the lights (left handlebar) to main beam, the low fuel, engine temp and oil level lights all come on for a second or two. If I go back to low they immediately extinguish, if I then go back to main again  they don't reappear. Its a one off (but repeated regularly)

If I leave the light on low for a few minutes and then flick to main they may(sometimes) light up again

I'm not sure what this indicates? has anyone else seen this happen?

Check your battery first.  How old is it?  Does it show 12.6v or more across the terminals, ignition off?  Are the earth connections good?

Next, check all the connector blocks for corrosion.

Thanks for the suggestion - it would make sense if it is related to volt drop. Its similar to what happens when you first switch the ignition on.

Charge the battery, this is common as the battery deteriorates, but does not necessarily mean you need a new battery immediately.
It could be that the bike is not being used for a long enough period after being started to recharge the battery fully

I have the exact same thing even with a fully charged battery. I was told to try this. http://www.yamahafz1oa.com/eskortsbatteryvoltagefix.shtml
I have the relays but not had a chance to do it yet..
Lord,
Grant me the WD-40 to move those things that are stuck, the Duck tape to fasten those things that are loose, And the wisdom to know the difference.

I had exactly the same problem once, i tried everything and even changed the loom, in the end i cut the big white block connector off under the left fairing trim and soldered the wires together and bingo all sorted .

This happened to me on the weekend and it's not the first time! I've owned my gen1 for about 7 years and it's on the same battery. Infact I reckon it's the original! It has always been connected to an optimate in my garage mind!

I think it's about time I get a new battery. Will order one today...

It looks like it's an earth issue having read the very helpful link provided. The relay solution looks sensible particularly if it improves the fuel gauge. If the battery is on its last legs it will create the same problem. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.  :)
