fresh oil (in a car)
« on: 28 July 2017, 01:24:50 pm »
Hi all,
I just got my car back from the local BMW main dealer after a major service. I drove it the 3miles home and thought I'll just pull out the dip stick, check the level and look at my nice new clear oil and it looks like the photo below. A bit of a black mess.

Now did they 'forget to do it', or is this what you would expect to see?
Luckily it's a company lease car, but I don't want to go embarrassing myself by flagging this up if it's normal.

(BMW 320d)

thanks,

Brett

Should tell you in the service log if a change of oil was needed, I think BMW oil change on a diesel is every 20 000 miles, every other year for most people so maybe yours wasn't due one either that or they didn't drain it very well before putting new in.

Its a diesel. They do that as soon as you start the engine with new oil in them.

Don't worry about it unless the oil feels thin when you rub it between your fingers,
Another ex-Fazer rider that is a foccer again

Ok cool, I spoke to a couple of mechanic mates and they've all said the same thing.
You can tell I'm used to a clean fazer engine and not a dirty diesel! :-)

Yes +1 to above. My Merc Sprinter diesel would show black colour oil on dipstick very soon after oil change. Oils formulated for diesel engines are designed to carry the black stuff without internal damage to engines. I was told diesel oils contain high levels of detergent chemicals. NEVER use diesel engine oil in a petrol engine & vice versa :eek  If your FAZER oil looked like that you would have to be excommunicated from the forum for cruelty! :lol
