Title: Engine dying at 7500ish rpm...
Post by: ogri48 on 15 July 2018, 05:30:24 pm
it's a strange one. Thought I had a busted exup cable, but they are fine. The bike ( 04 fazer thou, well maintained, 37k) runs like a peach and pulls like that geordie feller Adam on "love island", but gets to 7500 rpm and it loses power and bogs, change up and it's back on song until it hits 7500 again..
I'm guessing it's got to be electrics or fuel, but it's just really odd because it's faultless until it hits those revs, even two up and loaded. It ain't been serviced since early last winter ( about 3000 miles back) as I picked up aa nekkid cb1300 at the start of summer and I've been useing that a lot, but I'll order a full service kit off eBay this week and get it done then try it see if it's any better. Anybody else ever had this? Ecu failing? Exup servo playing silly buggers? Damned if I know..😬😬😬

Never in my two year ownership...😬😬last service I just did plugs, oil and oil filter. I think it's ivanised and it's running a race can, but I'm not sure if it's a standard air filter or k and n or similar. I'll change it out this week mate..or clean it if it's a k and n

I did notice it's heavier on fuel than it was. Best I check the air filter pronto.
Oh deary me, I may have made a terrible schoolboy error..😖😖😖

It don't look too drastic, but it's deffo dirty. I'll order a full service kit tomorrow, I guess that's the only way to find out ( aside from taking it out with no filter..bugger that..) think I'll go the gen Yamaha filters route, £120 with oil and plugs but you do get a new sump bolt washer..😉😊

That definitely looks bad enough to cause the issue you described.

At least it is a cheap fix  :)

Don't know whether it helps but my gen 2 with Scorpion can fitted runs a lot better with the OME filter, than with the K&N filter that the previous owner had fitted. The throttle response is quicker, smoother,  and it no longer f*rts and coughs to clear it's throat.

..if it's Ivanised then it should, I think, have the K&N air filter.

Mine does.

My bike is Ivanaized and has the k &n filter,  some bikes have the pipercross  or bmc filter,  don't think you should use the yam paper filter.  surely the idea of Ivanaizing is about performance and not using the right filter is a bit of a step back?
Also with the kit fitted at higher throttle opening you are going to need more air going in and the paper filter will restrict this. The price of a new paper filter is not that different when compared to being able to clean and re-use a performance filter. I believe the pipercross filter is cheaper than a k&n with no power difference.

The ivanising is an assumption, perhaps I should check the carb needless and find out once and for all. The reasons I think it has been are
1) bloke I bought it off had been useing it as a trackday bike..he had spent £600 at mct getting front and rear suspension set up ( hyperpro spring too) and the ais had been removed properly, along with a few other mods and a ti race can, hence I thought he would have had the Ivan's fitted along with the other mods
2) it goes like stinkeroo ( especially lower down), far far quicker than my first gen one fazer thou did.
I could be wrong though..could just be a good lump. I'll take a needle out and photo it...😉👍

Hmmm..I'm guessing that's stock?

Yup, looks stock to me, mate. :)

Check the top of the needle for stamped part nos.  Something like SD-130 or SD-129

Cheers mike. You told me to check my needles two years ago lol...😉Are you still doing the Ivan's runs mate or have you packed it in?

Btw on a completely unrelated note I just jumped on my cb1300 for a mountain run after useing the fazer for the last two weeks and nearly binned it several times..you forget how good a fazer is while your using it all the time, so easy to ride fast and change direction through series of bends..the cb was tying itself in knots ..😬😬😬

Hi Paul,
I called time on the 'Ivanising' earlier this year.  Not enough time between our adventures in the motorhome and other commitments.  Too busy in retirement, you know ... ? ;)

lol don't blame you mate. I'm kinda tempted to get an Ivan's kit and spend a day fitting it, but the bike runs so well as is I think I'll leave it. One day someone here will sell a fully sorted low miles minter with all the right work done, and I'll pounce on that, but keep my present bike 😉😊

Yes, still here but have been travelling a lot this spring and early summer so not always on good internet.  I try to keep an eye on the forum when I get the chance, though.  We're back home for a couple of months before hitting the road again.  Loving the gypsy lifestyle LOL! :D
