FZ-9 or MT09? To me it looks like different departments at Yamaha designed different bits of it, then they stuck it all together, especially in the side view. Not sure what they were trying to achieve, but with a new engine like that to promote, you'd think they'd come up with a more eye-catching styling job.

They are daring to be a little bit different and I think that is a really good thing. Lets be honest, we don't really need yet another I4 UJM, no matter how good it would probably be.

I love the idea of Yamaha doing a high tech modern triple, if you have ever ridden a twin or triple, then you know just how much fun all that torque can be. If you take this version as the naked base model, then by justing adding some fairings, you get a friendly commuter, change the subframe and you can produce a full touring model. I suspect this might be the start of a whole new product line.

I like the look of the hypermotard type bikes, it's got promise if that engine delivers like a triumph triple does. It's then a case of like some say on here, stick a fairing on it and it's a commuter/sports bike etc, etc..

A brave move though in the right direction.
Stop polishing it and ride the bloody thing!!

Is it a "crossplane crank" engine if the pistons fire every 240 degrees?

Well, it says "even firing intervals" so that was my take on it too.
Thing is, won't that make it feel pretty much like a four cylinder bike?

Don't get me wrong, it just isn't my cup of tea, looks wise. 'Course, it'd be a pretty boring world if we all thought the same. The only triple I've ever ridden was my old Denco tuned Kwak H2, mad as a box of frogs, a totally frightening experience! I've always wanted a 1050 engine Triumph, pref. a Speed Triple, but can't afford more than one bike alas. And I am totally intrigued to hear what the FZ9's engine is like - I hope it's a good 'un!

I think I'd need to see one in the flesh to make up my mind, but from the photos I can't say I'm keen on the styling.

The FZ series always had at least a nod to practicality, and this doesn't look as though it does. Like Honda's CB1000R or Kawasaki's Z1000, I can see it would be a lot of fun, but I could also see me spending a fortune getting it to look and sound the way I wanted.

Think I'll be sticking with my Gen1!

Check your pricing mate. The 2013 model has been reduced to $12,999 and you could also buy the non aprc model, which is still a far better bike for $10999 :)  That equates to approx  £1800 of a difference.

Nick, please stop showing me pics of Tuono V4s. It's not fair.

If it had a decent fairing and a 200 mile tank range, it would be even worse, of course.

It actually is a complete pain in the arse, as the tank only holds 15 1/2 ltrs not the 17 ltrs they tell you it holds and averages 25 - 30mpg unless on the motorway. They do aprilia touring screens now though... ;) . The reason i bought an Italian bike is because the yen is strong, so you get a better deal buying european bikes at the moment. I'm sure the fz9 will be ultra reliable and the triple will be a nice engine to use, but it looks like something i would design on the back of a beer mat after a few drinks. :\

That tank range and fuel consumption was a real deal killer for me. I wonder if a reflash of the ECU or a Power Commander would make a difference because it does seem unbelievable bad on fuel. Like it's petrol cooled!

But what a ride. I had a shot on one last year and it was spellbinding. Loved it. So flickable and even with standard pipes, that exhaust note was just perfect.

Yup. Great low to middle but shite up top imo. I like the scream of a 4 up top. The only triple's i kinda liked was the 1050 sprint and the rocket. The rocket is an absolute behemoth of a bike. Quicker than most litre sports bikes up to 70/80. Limited to 140 tho so a bit of a shame.

I like the looks, not enough to swap but I like it..
Cross plane would be interesting to have a spin with.
Never argue with an idiot, they will drag you down to their level then beat you with experience.
