Hey guys,

I have a shock (Red) + Dog bones that Devilsyam sold me beginning of last year, still not fitted and now looking at selling my FZS1000.

Therefore I am looking to shift it on - I paid 295 for it, happy to take £245 - Anyone interested? will send next day insured.

Jules.

I bought this set a couple of years ago. Fantastic set with everything you need in it. Good quality, robust tools. Have used on bikes and cars with no problems to report. I especially like the small ratchet and screw driver handles.

Buy and you will not be disappointed.

Quick Update:

Plug caps arrived and fitted - made no difference

Also received my infra red temp gun - fantastic little toy! and indeed £8

At idle from cold it seems after 5/10 minutes that the cylinders are about 160 degrees or so at header, apart from no4 which is around 200 degrees. I haven't had time to play with the mixture on 4 to see if it would bring it into line with the rest, but I also wonder at this stage whether a partially blocked idle jet would lean it out and cause the discrepancy.

Gives me something to play with on my week off anyway.

Haha, I appreciate everyones input, its just I have tried upping the idle speed before. I hope it is a solvable stutter.

Fazersharp - I admire your enthuasiasm, but the bike was idling in the vid, around 1250rpm. And as already pointed out, wasn't fully warmed up. After a 30 minute ride it idles at about 1350 - 1400.

I have ordered a new air filter and oil filter and will give it a service once they arrive, if the plug caps dont cure it - I'll get the carbs off in my week off.

Will keep this thread updated with any changes.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.  I have gone ahead and bought a new set of plug caps from eBay, at 1.99 each seems daft not to.
I'm at work atm on phone but once home I'll look into an infra red gun to check the headers temp at idle. Good to know I can dismantle and reassemble carbs without new seals. What does everyone use to clean out the jets? Guitar string? Air?

Like I said - not fatal, but irritating as you like. Sounds like an occasional miss, and ruins the bikes appeal when waiting in traffic.

If I up the idle speed, it doesn't vanish, even holding the throttle on up to about 2500 you can still (greatly reduced) detect it, but certainly at anything below 1600 its obviously there.

I really would love to get it running as smooth as possible - I can't believe that it is not doable. My last bike - a gpz500 sounded like a bag of nails when first started, but it idled rock solid once warm.

edit: The bike hadn't been used in two hours, so I started it and left it to run for about 10 mins or so before taking the video. Not perfect, but the idle doesn't really change much from what it shows.

Hey chaps,

Bought my Boxeye in January after righting off the last bike, and have had a pretty rough idle from the start. It's irritating but not terminal - the bike still revs freely and runs fine in traffic, but the idle hunts and sounds rough as.

I have replaced the plugs - no difference
checked the Coils and plug caps (chopped 10mm of the leads at the time) - All in spec
looked at the airfilter (seems cleanish - better than most),
checked the TPS  - in spec
and balanced the carbs (this made the bike run a lot smoother in traffic - but hasn't solved the idle).

I have covered nearly 2000 miles since buying the bike and had hoped it would clear itself. Seeing as this isn't the case I'm thinking my next stop will be the carbs - and checking the inlet rubbers etc whilst I am at it. Come may bank holiday I have a week shutdown at work and so would like to buy anything necessary now in order to pull and properly sort it then. But I need to guarantee the bike will be on the road again the following week as it is my only transport to work.

So the big question is:

what do I need to service/sort this bike out including carb overhaul? Any products, special tools, gaskets, rebuild kits etc? is the air filter worth doing for the sake of it - or is that just wasting my money/effort?

Please take a look at the video of it idling I have uploaded to YouTube - maybe someone smarter than me will recognise the symptoms.

Hey folks, planning a holiday in Kent come July, and me and the missus were thinking of taking the eurostar passenger service to Paris from Ashford on one of the days. Does anybody know what the motorcycle parking situation is like there? Is there anywhere cheap/free to park up for the day?

As always when drilling steels, try to keep drill RPMs down, slower the better, but definitely sub 1000 rpm. makes a hell of a diff, and prevents too much heat build up hardening off any surfaces (especially true of stainless steels)

Thanks for the heads up.  I might head on up one weekend when the weather gets nicer.

Hi thanks,
Its got just under 16k on the clock and I got it from p&p motorcycles outside Chichester.
I'm liking the look of the lower fairing but it made getting at the plugs a right pig due to the way its bolted on. But working in a machine shop I think i can knock up some better brackets and spacers to make it easier.

Still running sweet as 3 days on. Really enjoying it.

Mission accomplished!

Carbs were definitely a bit out and it did take a while to straighten out but I got them all within a division on the scale.
There is still a small intermittent stumble on idle, I think from Cyclinder no. 2 as it seemed to fluctuate more than the others.

But I have to say its a different bike now. Went for a short test ride and I can now roll on from just above idle and the pickup is dead smooth, as is throttling off for traffic. Much more manageable. So I'm looking forward to the week ahead now.

Having seen the aged plugs, I'm guessing the previous owners were all about the looks and not so much the mechanical servicing so I think I'll get on and and order new plugs, air filter, oil etc and change a few serviceables. other than that I'm gonna run her for a few hundred miles and see if the idle smooths out completely.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and suggestions, I can see this forum is going to be invaluable.

Thanks chaps, and especially bandit, that guide is spot on!

Having tea break half way through now.

Lower fairing is off, and I have re-gapped all the plugs (there were all about 0.9 - 1.0mm). Tank is on the seat ready for carb balancing next - just need some warm tea to see me through!

Any full carb overhauls (if needed) will have to wait til spring before I deem them necessary (or a complete break down!)

I normally wouldn't use esso super, but in this instance I chose to as when fuel degrades and becomes stale, from what I remember it actually reduces it's octane level slightly as it goes. So - my thinking was that a half n half mix might get it somewhere near normal level lol - but in all honesty who knows! Might be an old wives tale.

I'm hoping to check the carb balance tomorrow, shouldn't take too long and cant hurt. Can always re do it with a service later in the year.

Haha! yeah I'm the new owner. Bike had half a tank when I got her, but once home I did brim her with esso super thinking the same thing about stale fuel.

It actually took me quite a long time to pick between the red and the gold one they had, the red one looked liked it had seen slightly less weather, but mechanically (brake pads, tyres, bearings etc) the gold one seemed better - even though the red had  receipts for 1500+ of servicing and repair bills over the last couple of years! Also the gold one had a set of stainless pipes. The deal was sealed when the red one failed to start and run up smoothly and the gold one did.

I'm still not sure which was the  better buy but I'm happy with the gold one as I also prefer the colour (less fading!)

It has been really showery here today, but I have just managed to get 20 dry minutes outside to give her a once over, and everything actually seems better than I had thought condition wise - the tools are also present and correct! I started her up for a few minutes to check all four header pipes were getting hot - and they certainly are! *blows on fingers some more* So hopefully a plug gap check and a carb balance will see me right.

Watch this space!

Haha! she was mine already.

Glad to hear everyone's consensus on the carbs, I have the carbtune in the cupboard so when I get some nice weather I'll set to balancing them, and check the plugs at the same time.

I'm not sure myself whether the lower fairing will be staying, I'm not too keen on them either, plus it kinda gets in the way of maintenance

I was a little nervy riding her home today after the accident, but I needn't have been as apart from the stutter it was quite an easy, civil ride. Also that front fairing seems to protect the hands some, and they didn't get cold; even without heated grips.

Hey guys!

Wrote off my gpz500 last monday on a ford KA that didn't see me  :eek  and now my leg has recovered I have just brought my new steed home. Loving the colour and it goes well, although it does seem to hesitate and run a little rough sub 3000rpm. Hopefully some tlc and a slight service will help that once I get some OK weather.
