I think I'm in the market for one now  :D

I think it'd suit some of the roads around here better than the  :faz , lighter, more nimble. Not that the Fazer is going. But the local Triumph dealer got flooded out and all their stock destroyed, can't find anything on eBay, gumtree etc reasonably local. Where else should I look? (shut it Exupnut, you complete and utter waste of space). Back down south, I saw one with all the right mods (Triumph accessories, Arrow cans etc) for around the 5 grand mark, but wasn't ready to buy then  :rolleyes

Anybody collect these/know anything about values?

Just found my Dad's collection in the loft, and I don't know whether to just chuck 'em out, or if any of them have any value. Not a massive collection.

General / Camera Questions
« on: 15 October 2015, 01:18:46 pm »
Time to up my game from a dig compact, as I now feel ready to get a bit more serious about my photography. The compact will stay on as a handy point and snap job. My main subject is landscape work. Can you recommend a good entry-level DSLR, and perhaps a couple of lenses to go with it? (I gather wide-angle is the preference for landscape?).Want to shoot in RAW, so am also thinking about investing in Lightroom software - is that a good starting point? Should I also consider mirrorless cameras, as I have been hearing one or two good reports on some (Sony NEX7?), and they seem to be a little less bulky and heavy than more traditional DSLRs? Pros and cons? Price range: I will be considering 2nd hand, so probably top out somewhere in the region of £400 for camera, plus lenses? Reasonable for a starting point, or should I think about/need to be spending more? Any new ones to consider in that bracket? Any other equipment I should consider as essential? Any books/publications you can recommend, specifically on landscape photography, which might help me on my way? Have subscribed to a landscape photography e-magazine for now. All help appreciated.

General / Converting wma music files
« on: 07 October 2015, 04:02:50 pm »
So, I've switched to a Mac from using Windows 7.

All the music I've downloaded transferred across fine, but I ripped all my old CDs before that, and they are in wma format, which the Mac can't use. I've been looking at AVS conversion software online. You can download an example to play with, which I have done, and it seems to work ok, but they 'stamp' everything with an audio voice-over, so you have to buy the activated version of the software to get the job done properly - about $59. Well, it's certainly cheaper than buying all those albums again by a long way, and the quality on the demo version seemed ok.

But does anyone have experience of these converters? Are there likely to be problems further along the line? Are there better ways of doing this? Any help and advice appreciated.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Gen 1 rough running...again
« on: 04 October 2015, 10:19:32 pm »
Had this before it was serviced, running like a twin below 3k. Service done and all was fine and sweet again. 1500 miles later and it's getting rough again.

One question. The vacuum take-off cap for the Scottoiler seems very loose fitting. Could this have any connection with the rough running?

So, did the "What Did You Do With Your Fazer" bit, but for anyone who loves the place, here's some more piccies taken on my recent trip.

Stayed at this B&B at Golberdon, just north of Callington on the A388. Off the main road, you go along a couple of typical, tiny little Cornish lanes to get to it, and it's very peaceful there. They welcome bikers, the husband and son ride themselves:

Peering over the cliff edge at Rame Head:

St. Germanus church, just inland of Rame Head.

Looe:

Love all the old cottages in these seaside towns, and the little alleyways that wind their way between the 'main' streets:

Brace for impact!  :lol  :

Now if I had some decent photo software, i think I could do something with this pic; I like the dark sky and rocks contrasting with the light sand and sparkling waves:

Charlestown coast:

And the ships:

From the coast path at Land's End:

When you walk the coast path, you come across many relics from the tin mining industry, some quite spooky with a truly haunted feel, especially as at many of these sites there'll be no one around but you and the wind. Not quite the same atmosphere when you're next to a road, even one like the coast road near St. Just. But tried to capture something of it here:

And if you turn around to face inland from the same spot, the hill rises to this rocky tor:

Couple more taken at St. Mawes castle:

Guns, guns and more guns! :

Lizard Point tries to get in on the Land's End act:

Some of my better shots of Polperro:

A couple that I sketched way back on my coast path walk in '98:

And I'll let the coast path have the final word - it really is one of the most stunning parts of Britain in my opinion:

A great trip, brought back loads of wonderful memories. I may be heading north soon, but Cornwall will always have a place in my heart  :)

Never used one before, but the new bike has one. Let the reservoir run out, so have been trying to re-prime it. Got it so oil actually dripped out of the feed to the chain whilst squeezing the bottle, so I know that side isn't blocked, and no more air bubbles coming from the reservoir, but no evidence of it oiling by itself. Blocked vacuum tube?

I've turned it up to max, and will check it like that tomorrow, so fingers crossed, any thoughts from those who have them?

Have you ever found yourself bimbling happily through life (or so you thought), and then for whatever reason, realised you're actually not at all happy with things, and made a complete change? E.g., quit your job, jacked in a relationship, or whatever, to do something entirely different?

If so, was the realisation quick, or did it dawn on you more gradually? And what did it take to make you finally actually get off your arse and do something about it?

Might be at that point myself right now, and am asking myself a lot of searching questions lately  :eek

Events, Meets, Ride outs etc / South and South West Wales
« on: 12 July 2015, 01:50:49 pm »
This is an area of Wales I've yet to explore, so I was thinking about doing a trip there soon. I'll be looking for some decent roads to ride, places of interest and nice scenery to photograph and the like. I might possibly head for Caerphilly and Cardiff castles on the way, and then head for the Pembrokeshire coast. It may be that I'll need to do more than one day trip to take in what there is to see.

So, Wales Foccers, got any tips of where to head for, what to see? Is there anywhere on the Pembrokeshire coast where you can get to with the bike, park up safely and maybe do a bit of a cliff-top walk, see some of the better parts of this Heritage coast?

Noggy, I'm actually inviting you to get your verbal diarrhoea head on!  :lol

Y'see, he has a little, I'm sure quite irrational, fear of bears it seems  :b

OMG! The BEARS!!!

 :lol

A little bed time reading for you Luke:

"All bears are agile, cunning and immensely strong, and they are always hungry. If they want to kill you and eat you, they can, and pretty much whenever they want. That doesn't happen often, but - and here's the salient point - once would be enough."

Some advice. If you come between a mother bear and her cubs:

"Nothing worries and antagonises a female bear more than to have people between her and her brood. Furious, she turned and gave chase - despite the bear's lolloping gait it can move at up to 35 miles an hour..." So best not do that  :)

A reiteration of some advice I gave you a while back, just in case you've forgotten:

In bear country, wear small tinkling bells, so that you alert bears to your presence without startling them.
Also carry pepper spray in case you do encounter a bear.
And it's useful to be able to tell black bears and grizzly bears apart by their droppings. Black bear shit tends to contain berries and maybe small squirrels.
Grizzly bear shit contains little tinkling bells and smells of pepper spray....

And another way to be able to tell them apart:
If you see a bear, climb a tree. If it climbs the tree and kills you, it's a black bear. If it knocks the tree down and kills you, it's a grizzly bear.......

So what do you do if you encounter a bear? Run?

"All the books tell you that if a grizzly comes for you, on no account should you run. This is the sort of advice you get from someone who is sitting at a keyboard when he gives it. Take it from me, if you are in an open space with no weapons and a grizzly comes for you, run. You may as well. If nothing else, it will give you something to do with the last seven seconds of your life."

Play dead?

"A grizzly may chew on a limp form for a minute or two, but will generally lose interest and shuffle off."

And a black bear?

"With black bears however, playing dead is futile since they will continue to chew on you until you are considerably past caring."

Shoot it?

"...nothing unnerved the native Indians more than the grizzly (mostly predominant where you're going Luke, i.e., Yellowstone  :b), and not surprisingly since you could riddle a grizzly with arrows - positively porcupine it - and it would still keep coming. Even Lewis and Clark with their big guns were astounded by the ability of the grizzly to absorb volleys of lead with barely a wobble."

How to ward off an aggressive bear?

"... Herrero (author of "Bear Attacks: Their Causes And Avoidance") suggests making a lot of noise, banging pots and pans together, throwing sticks and rocks and 'running at the bear'. (Yeah, right. You first professor.) On the other hand, he then adds judiciously, these tactics could 'merely provoke the bear'. Well, thanks. Elsewhere he suggests...should consider making noises from time to time - singing a song, say - to alert bears to your presence, since a startled bear is more likely to be an angry bear, but then a few pages later cautions that 'there may be danger in making noise', since that can attract a hungry bear that might otherwise overlook you.
The fact is, no one can tell you what to do. Bears are unpredictable, and what works in one circumstance may not work in another."

But rest assured, bear attacks are rare:

"In the 8 decades to 1980 he found just 23 confirmed black bear killings of humans (about half the number of killings by grizzlies)...adds that most of these injuries were not severe..." (what, death?!  :eek )
" 'The typical black bear inflicted injury', he writes blandly, 'is minor and usually involves only a few scratches and light bites'.
Pardon me, but what exactly is a light bite? Are we talking a playful wrestle and gummy nips? I think not."

But don't worry mate, I'm sure you'll be fine - happy holidays!  :D

No, not a thread especially for midden  :lol

Stolen the idea from another forum, as it can get quite funny, and also, lots of whingeing old bastards on here who like a good gripe (not me, I'm not old - just stuck in my ways...apparently  :rolleyes ).

So I'll kick off with my latest one, verbatim from the other site:

When you discover a product at the supermarket that you really like and they stop stocking it. Or, they reduce the serving and bump up the price. In fact, one seems to precede the other, so that's probably what will happen to the particular thing I have in mind this time.

They're feckin rationing me! My meals are getting smaller and smaller, cos damned if I'll pay for two now they've shrunk the original. Bastards.

"New recipe!" less of the more expensive ingredients. "Same price!" for a smaller portion.

« on: 26 May 2015, 09:38:51 am »
Ok. At risk of being bombarded with suggestions like "what about a nice shade of hedgerow green" etc, I want to get a custom job done on the latest bike. I had thought about copying the last one, still really like that, but want to consider what else might be nice. I don't like murals, not overly keen on metallic colours, like retro-ish styles, bright colours especially when contrasted against dark. Got any pics of bikes where the style might fit the Fazer?

Don't really mind the banter bit, but would actually quite welcome some more serious responses too, if that's at all possible. Ta.

« on: 20 May 2015, 01:43:38 pm »
So, two fractured vertebrae just over 3 weeks ago, in a back brace, review in 3 weeks. Rest and care needed.

 BUT...

Have an offer on the house, and have found what looks like the ideal place in my target area, need to drive 250 miles to view it, overnight B&B, 250 miles home next day. I've driven a 100 mile round trip (against all advice) but was ok.

House has no chain, offer for ours says bruv and I must only be looking for one property between us, otherwise, too awkward and could take ages. Bruv is viewing two places this weekend, and I will join him for a short while as a lodger, until I've got my next place sorted, which makes things easier for all concerned- if he goes for one of the properties. Not sure about the chain on the side of the potential buyer for ours, but it has taken since Feb just to get this first offer. It is one that we are inclined to accept.

Discovered yesterday that much of my pain was due to having the back brace too tight, which was compressing old injuries. Doh!
So the pain is not as bad as I thought, but still uncomfortable.

So, the medical advice will be don't do the drive - what would you do? I'm currently thinking to book a viewing, book the B&B and give it a go. Property I'm considering really does look excellent, but obviously I have to view it before buying.

General / New Research On Fastest Colour!
« on: 13 May 2015, 11:33:25 am »
After exhaustive research at a top secret testing ground, scientists can now categorically state that yellow is NOT the fastest colour. A spokesperson for the MoSWoPM (Ministry of Spurious Waste of Public Money) said that even though speed blocks do seem to improve performance somewhat, they did find one other colour combination that was significantly faster. When asked what that combination was, however, he wouldn't be drawn and said that it was not in the public interest to release that information at this time. We gather that black engines and frames are involved...

Low mileage, excellent condition, standard as possible. Really looking for sub 10k miles. If you see one whilst trawling the net or whatever, I'd really appreciate a heads-up, cash waiting for right bike. I'm in Oxfordshire, but will consider anywhere in the country if collection can be arranged.

MUST BE BLACK ENGINE AND FRAME VERSION. This is to be the base bike for my perfect Fazer, so nothing else will do.

Any colour paintwork  :lol

Wanted ASAP.

Some people might consider this tempting fate, but sometimes they're a good place to analyse with the help of others where you may have gone wrong, how to avoid similar in future. Bit late in the year to start this really, but unfortunately, I guess we'll have a few more before the year is out. Please keep your spill numbered consecutively if you enter it here, give us some idea of the statistics we get over the coming months.
So I guess I'll start:

NUMBER 1

Lost concentration on a bend on the A483 Crossgates-Newtown road. By the time I focussed again on where I was going, the hedge was where I was going  :lol
Nearly kept it shiny side up running along the verge, got speed right down, maybe 30 or even less by the time it actually spat me off, but somehow slipped/was dragged back on the seat causing me to open the throttle wide  :eek and that was that; bounced off the hedge and landed flat on my back on the verge/tarmac join. Two cracked vertebrae, bruised lungs, slightly twisted knee. Bike mostly cosmetic damage, but on top of the last one, she's looking pretty sad and tatty now.  :(

General / IWM Duxford.
« on: 20 April 2015, 09:35:12 pm »
Headed there today. It might've been an idea if I'd checked their website first, as the American Hangar is closed for refurb until spring 2016! But don't know when I'll get another chance, and entry was a fiver less than usual. Now, it's not a particularly cheap day out; usual adult entry is £22.50 (£17.50 today), the on-site catering is a rip-off and poor quality with little choice, so I'd recommend having a bite elsewhere before your visit if you go. But having said that, I still think it's well worth it, especially on an air show day. The Flying Legends show in particular is an event not to be missed! Another reason I think it's worth it is because there's not another place quite like it in Britain, maybe the whole of Europe. If Warbirds are your thing, Duxford is the modern home for them. From static displays, to restoration work, to full flying originals, you could easily while away a whole day here, especially when the American hangar and military vehicle shows are up and running.

Thought some might enjoy a bit of a taster:

Avro Lancaster and DeHavilland Mosquito:

English Electric Lightning (the last of the fast - someone told me most of them are now living at the bottom of the North Sea  :lol ):

Grumman Bearcat in full flying fettle:

Another flyer, Gloster Gladiator:

There were two P-51D Mustangs there today:

I say today, cos you never quite know what might be visiting from time to time. Flying Legends tends to have anywhere between 5 and 10 attending, all flying in the show.

One of a number of restoration projects, Hawker Sea Fury:

And a Bristol Beaufighter; all I know about this one is that it was built under license by the Aussies:

The world famous Sally B:

aka Memphis Belle:

A rare beasty, Me109. Best shot I could get, don't know if this one's a flyer, not many around:

Much in demand are flights in this two-seater Spitfire:

This is what I love about Duxford. It's almost like you've been taken back to 1940. Clipped wings on Spitfires was to increase the roll rate, making them more manoeuvrable for tight dog-fights:

My favourite, serial no. MH434, a Mk IXB:

Not just WWII stuff at Duxford either; a Buccaneer:

Very rare. Cockpit from a Mitsubishi Zero fighter:

In the Battle of Britain hangar:

Cold War enemy, MiG 21:

Hiding away, an on-going Heinkel 111 restoration:

Bloodhound SAM. I remember there being line upon line of these when I was based at RAF Wyton:

This really is just a small sample of what they have there. Flying today was a Catalina and the two-seat Spitfire, and I've been there before when Spitfires have been on air test, 'beating up' the airfield at low level. The American Museum (when open) is almost worth a visit in it's own right. Marvellous place!
