Not as professional as the cutdown cub fairings I had on the T.Cat but for less than a fiver it'll do me for winter!

Wow, that has to add, what, at least 5bhp?!?  :lol :lol :lol

Rospa was interesting, missed out on a gold, just,,,

I filtered to the front of a set of lights in front of a white van in a 30 section and the examiner said I could have put my self at risk if the van decided to race me, he siad he's seen it bofore

Ok, this one I can agree with, the recommendation I got from my IAM Observer was to filter to between the second and first vehicles so you don't risk someone trying to play "first away from the lights" with you.

Quote
and also braking down from a 70 to a 30 instead of using the engine. This contradicted what an IAM guy told me to do on an IDCAM a year ago so a bit annoyed at that.

That does sound iffy.

I was advised that using acceleration sense (just slowing using the throttle) was ok for speed changes of not much more than 10mph eg going from 40mph to 30mph, but for more than that, the rule is "gears to go, brakes to slow" because it's cheaper to replace brake pads than a gear box, also, of course, using the brakes means you show a brake light to let anyone behind you know you're slowing.

Unfortunately RoSPA and IAM have slightly different group ethos, RoSPA being more about prioritising safety, so you have to play by their rules :(

Still, a RoSPA Silver is pretty damn good!

Moved it from one side of the garage to the other so I could get my long arm hedge trimmer and leaf blower out.

Some say that he eats habanero chilli peppers dipped in oil of capsaicin for extra bite and that his pyjamas are made from Nomex. All we know is, he's called Ad the Bad

Had to make a little improvement to my projector light units (one had come loose). So decided to jazz up the side lights while the front was off.

I fitted a couple of SMD LED strips. I reckon it looks the biz.

NB The strips are inside the headlight, pointing backwards.

The middle one is a DRL thats been on for ages!

Changed the rear tyre on the Gen 1 and discovered a dodgy right side bearing; a job for tomorrow after work.

On the engine braking thing ---doesn't anyone "blip the throttle while you are changing down when the clutch is in as that adds speed to the engine and reduces the braking a little and makes the whole thing of changing down a lot smother and means somtimes you dont even have to use the brakes
Bliping the throttle is vital to smooth gear changes, and like Nick Crisp have being doing it all my riding career and was one of the things I have always taught beginners, unless of course you have all the MotoGP electronics and seamless boxes. :)
I have met quite a few in recent years who have complained of not being able to down change smoothly and discussing it over a few beers realised they did not blip the throttle and had never even heard of it. The instructors they had did not teach it after trying it they do not understand why the instructors did not teach it. :rolleyes
Doddsie, if blipping the throttle is not making your gear changes smoother it may be that you are over doing it. :)
As you say Midden, emergency braking is different, mostly because you may not have the time to drop down the box.

Got to admit at no point was I ever taught this by any of my instructors. I was taught when slowing down to slightly let out the clutch to bring the engine speed up to the transmission between each gear change. The first I heard of it was a couple of weeks ago when I watched twist Of The Wrist on youtube thanks to a link on here.

Been practising it today, and when I get it right it is a lot smoother, but fuck me it's hard to get right!  :rolleyes
I either don't blip enough and it makes no difference, or blip too much and surge forward when I let the clutch out.
I'll get it eventually though.....
Broken, bruised, forgotten, sore,
too fucked up to care any more.

It's funny, but when I was learning to ride, mostly after I got rid of my L-plates, everyone in my peer group blipped the throttle on down-changes. I think at first, everyone just thought it sounded sorta cool. Then it became habit. I don't think any of us were ever taught to do it. I don't think that at the time we realised it had a practical application.

The best way for beginners to practice the blipping is on an open quiteish road drop from 6th to 5th, then do it from 6th to 5th and 5th to 4th.
After a  while it becomes second nature. The biggest problem most beginners have is over blipping. Usually you need less than a 1000 revs of a blip on the fazers. The high reving sports bikes need a little more, but most of them would have a slightly faster throttle which makes it easier and the lower reving bikes like twins a little less.
Like Nick Crisp I learned from peers, but in a time long before L plates and instructors :lol
Apage16, the disadvantage of letting the clutch in smoothly is that your gear change is slower which slows you down on a hi speed spirited ride :lol

Another tip is to see how much the revs drop when changing up, usually 500 revs or so. therefore if you blip the throttle to between 500-1000 revs on a down change that should be sufficient.
I always change down as i slow, and sometimes the gearbox may over work if i'm being competitive on my ride out but I've never got to a junction and not been totally ready to pull out. This is probably why I've not had any more training. I don't think i'm doing anything wrong(I know i'm not) And I've never had a gearbox problem with any of the 20 or so bikes I've owned.
I can think of only 1 time where I've made a balls up by filtering to the front and that was next to a big Mercedes ML 350 and he totally gunned it from the lights and i was faster but then went across him to join the motorway. He justifiably used his very loud horn and very bright lights. My fault but i now look at what car is at the front and his road positioning. Still learning after 32 years of doing it.

I may need a little more wind tunnel testing before releasing my fairing to the public, I'm thinking £50 a set as a competitive pricing, any colour/ pattern will be available, however you won't have a choice on colour/ pattern as it depends what's in the local skip or what 'for sale' signs are close to my flat at time of ordering!
Early orders will include cheap eBay cable ties in the fitting kit!

Idon't think its a good idea to be telling (not as experienced ) riders 500revs / 1000revs as on top of everything else they are going to be looking down at the counter, and after all they are changing down to turn? enter a roundabout?. Just "blip" the throttle is all they need to know and practice will perfect how much is needed in all instances

I think you missed the point, the 500/1000revs were an example of how little you need to twist the throttle to get the desired effect. :)
