General / Hard of hearing - helmet compatible devices
« on: 17 June 2017, 09:16:20 am »
Hi folks,
I've a question about using hearing aids - cochlear implant devices particularly - whilst wearing a helmet.
My bezzie uses a standard hearing aid on one ear and a cochlear on the other. I'm trying to help find a solution for using both or either whilst wearing a helmet. We have intercom but it's practically useless for my mate because his hearing devices don't fit under his helmet. It's damned frustrating and I think there must be a solution. Does anyone know of one?
Understandably, he's reluctant to carve bits out of his helmet liner/shell foam, at pain of compromising the helmet integrity and voiding his insurance. What do other hearing aid users do? Is there a blue tooth facility for cochlear devices or hearing aids? Or perhaps a wired ear bud or cochlear attachment that connects in some way to his device/s that can then be kept in a pocket or something?
My mate's been looking around for yonks, and the cochlear people (this was a great suprise) don't have an answer. Perhaps we're missing something obvious?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
TIA, Niel

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: EXUP error issue
« on: 11 May 2017, 09:10:35 pm »
Hi JD. I had similar EXUP fault indicator problems. I cleaned and lubed the damned thing til I was blue in the face and still it reared it's ugly head. I threw caution to the wind and tightened the cables to what I thought was too tight (no measuring, just went by feel on the spanner!). The cables were tight, with no discernible movement. I then loosened off 1/4 turn and hey presto! No 7000 dance  :) As you noted, I, too, noticed no change when it started but just wanted to stop it happening! Either way, I keeping up a regular service on it.

Thanks for the advice, Tom. I got the Suzi 650 protectors. A bit of fine adjustment needed: the hole in the 'tab' that's meant to fit around the bar end and be gripped when tightening in the bar end wieght is too small, so I cut it larger. . . only to find it's too thick for the gap between the bar and weight. Consequently, friction is appled to the throttle, essentially preventing it from closing.  . . not good! So I shaved down the tab but no change. I now have the tab simply held in position beacuse of its rigidity. After a good long test run, I noticed no vibration so I'm happy with it. And they do make a difference  :D

Yeah - it's been a bit of an issue in the past. It's an FZ1 carb'd, 2005 model. Bloomin import  :\

Thanks, Tom. Yep - carb'd version. I'll have a butchers at the Suzuki 650 protectors you recommend. The big issue I found with the ones I bought - and immediately sold on - was the armoured brake hose from the reservoir - The attachment from the protector would only just squeeze into a gap in the two hoses and moving it aorund to fit was really a non-starter. But I'll check out those you recommend.
Many thanks,
Nellog

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Weather protectors for handlebars
« on: 12 April 2017, 06:17:23 pm »
Hi all,
I'm after a pair of hand protectors that I can fit to my handlebars.

I do a bit of touring on my FZ1 2005 model. Last trip my hands got soaked though from rain  :( , and I want to avoid that this year. I've been looking for yonks and I can't find any simple weather shields to fit. I don't want to sound a skinflint (but, frankly, the Yamaha ones thorugh my dealer are a rip-off), but there must be a simple system that fits around the brake fluid resevoir and are large enough to provide protection (the so called generic 'motocross' type seem small).
I've found some for the 2009 model - would they fit my bike?
Does anybody on here use them? Any suggestions please.
Many thanks,
Nellog

Right, that's on order. Cue big grin  :D . Thanks for your help guys. I only feel a bit daft for not coming here first. One day - sorted. Yip yip!

Thanks Oldson. I'm checking out next thing. RMT1983 - speak to you soon!

Hi folks. I'm having real difficulty getting hold of a right side fairing panel insert. Thanks to a doddery cager who decided to keep her indicator going after a roundabout exit then stopping as soon as her wheels were straight, I had a slow off.  I'm in the process of getting the fairing sorted: repair is in hand, but the insert (between the tank and the front fairing) is proving to be elusive. It's getting beyond a joke - I can get a left hander, no probs  :\ .
Does any Foccer know where I can get one please? I've done the usual, but had no joy over the two weeks. I'm on a 2005 Gen1 FZS, that I think is an import (I was given a few pointers such as the reflectors on the forks and three wires coming from the indicators - one not connected).
Thanks in advance, you lovely people.

« on: 03 March 2016, 12:38:42 pm »
Hi Robbo. I had a problem with the bar ends 'sticking' when trying to replace them. I heaved and heaved but felt I was only going to damage something so I took it into the local workshop. They put a good allen key in and a huge lever before swinging on it. I grimaced  :\  but the mechanic took it as the norm and a few swings later it came free. I have no idea why they should be put those things in so tight.

Cheers, Val. Smart looking machine there, buddy. That's some can! I'm not into much bling, but the bar ends and dust caps on the 600 I felt were just enough to put a personal touch on her. Oh, and the wheel trims  :lol . I got blue LED's for the dash on my 1000. They make a fair bit of difference for night riding (not that I aim to do a lot of that, just getting back from a ride out really). Easier to see dash detail than with the original bulbs.
The panniers tell me you do a bit of touring. Been anywhere lately?

Hi, Val. Sorry for the delay, buddy. My 600. 01 plate and less than 17,000 on the clock.

Roxburd. I have to say that, after adjusting the pulley cable on the Exup (initial indication of Exup fault on the speedo - 0 to 7000rpm), the fault persisted. I was impressed how the Exup operates directly proportional to the amount of throttle given - but it moves gradually rather than a sudden leap open/closed. It can be heard snapping back closed when I hit the kill switch. I didn't notice any change in performance after this adjustment. Given the state of my plugs and balancing, though, it's no surprise.
The signs and symptoms I got before any remedial work were:
Difficulty starting (not an Exup fault symptom, I understand),
Uneven tickover,
A brief delay in engine revs pick up when revving her up (it was possible to twist and release before the engine revs picked up!),
Holding the throttle open, she ran as rough as a bag pf spanners until eventually picking up and screaming,
Intermittent pick up from low revs (static and moving off), and
Scarily low power, jerking and running on three sometimes, at low revs at any speed.

Now that's all done, I've just noticed the Exup warning again. Grr.. It's coming out this time - the slack cable was obviously not the only thing that needed doing.

Once I got home, I noticed that the 7k error message still appears, but now only when I turn on the contact.
Hi, Thijs. I had a similar problem. I Noticed the Exup warning initially when the bike was only ignition on. I checked and one side of the pulley cable was very loose. I fixed it within a minute. I'd have a look at this first - it's a simple job and you can't do any damage if you adjust the cable a little at a time. If you listen carefully, you can hear whether the Exup opens and closes. If this fails to solve it - I'd be straight back to the garage!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Solved - rough running on 05 Gen 1 1000
« on: 15 November 2015, 10:06:53 pm »
I've seen posts about this before, when looking for clues to the low revs rough running problem I've had on my Gen 1 1000.
I found a wealth of information and advice on here! All very useful but most beyond my capabilities to deal with. Being methodical by nature, I tackled what I could - checking for loose leads, leaking fuel, signs of fuel pump failing (simply listened for intermittent running), operation of Exup. All to no avail.
Delving deeper, I struggled to take out the only plug I could get to - no.1. It was in a right mess (2.5mm gap!). Aha! Solved it methinks. A clean up and reset to correct gap changed nothing.
It was disappointing to say the least - the bike has what appears to be a fsh, and was serviced only a few hundred miles before I got it. Clearly, the servicer didn't bother with the plugs (and what else, I wondered). Oil was clean as a whistle, so I'm guessing that's all that was done.
After a deep breath and consulting the bank balance, I bit the bullet and took her in to George Petch's for a full service and a request to please sort out the rough running if the service doesn't solve it.
Bingo! All four plugs buggered and carb no. 3 a long way out of balance. She now runs like a dream. Hats off to Petch's for a first class job and great debrief on the condition of my bike (very nice was how mechanic Mick summed it up  :D )
My point here is this: Check out the simple things first, don't be afraid to ask for advice and opinion and be wary of blindly believing the service record on a bike new to you.
I read loads of stuff that could be wrong - most had huge £ signs flashing before my eyes. Take heart that it may be something less sinister.

Hi, Bikerz. I'm new here as well. Just finding my feet on the forum.
In June 2014, I got my first bike after 27 years! In those days, I rode a 400 four. My thinking was that bikes probably have a lot more to them than 27 years ago (electric starters were a luxury back then!), so I aimed fora 250, or another 400 at a push. I didn't want to scare myself silly. Everybody. Yes, everybody I spoke to said 'Go bigger. You'll soon want more'. So I got a Fazer 600. Perfect. Such a great bike to ride, and there's plenty of oomph if you want it - just wind her up to 8000 rpm and beyond and she turns into a demon.
I'd definitely suggest a Fazer. Enjoy.

You have a FZS1000,the carbed version,  . . . . known in America as a FZ1,  be careful when buying stuff on ebay.
That's great Info. Thanks, Slappy. You're a star. Looking for bits for it was my main concern - knowing exactly what model I'm buying for would be an advantage  :lol
He he, Exupnut. I saw a silver grey one, two days after I got mine. That threw me. Had a right long chat with the owner - he'd had it only a week so I guess there'd been a run on Fazers :rolleyes I don't think I convinced him to have it resprayed to the stock colour!

I'm sure I'll be back time and again, Sinto. Got a week off so I'll be getting stuck into the rough running problem - and no doubt be screaming for help on here as I get lost in it. Looking forward to the time when I'm able to give help!

Introduction / New here and new to the Fazer 1000
« on: 08 November 2015, 03:18:44 pm »
Hi folks,
I've recently registered on the FOC forum and just beginning to feel my way round the site. I currently run an 05 plate FZS 1000.
As for my biking credentials: Many moons ago, I rode a Honda 400 four, keeping it alive for a pal while he was away with the forces. Some 27 years or so later, I took the leap and got myself a 51 plate FZS 600. As it'd been sooo long since I rode a bike, I did the sensible thing and went on a few refresher sessions at my local bike school. What the school didn't prepare me for was the buzz that's to be had when out on two wheels (I still can't believe I'd forgotten what it feels like out there, only remembering that it was fun).
Anyway, I got the 600 in June 2014 with only 8,500 on the clock and it fit like a glove. Immediately I felt comfortable on her. I did the usual - local blats out with biking pals and the odd trip away for a day or two to see pals up and down the country and around the Lake District. She's now relaxing in the garage (while I enjoy playing on the FZS 1000) with just under 17,000 on her. I'd almost doubled the mileage in 16 months! That bike took me around the UK, a 'Training Day' at Cadwell and 12 days around the Pyrenees without a hiccup. God bless Fazers :D  I learnt so much on her that I'm going to be sad to see her go, but go she must. Probably Spring 2016.

I try to get out there as much as I can and, weather permitting, so she'll not be sat too long over the winter months.
My first step now is to get that bloody low revs lumpy running on the 1000 sorted.... I'll no doubt be back!
Before I go, can I ask you experienced and more knowledgeable Fazer owners a tad embarrassing question: How do I know whether my bike is a Fazer 1000, an FZ1, an FZS 1000 T or TC or whatever it may be? It's 05 plate and has retro fitted fairing (in case it's only possible to fit it on certain models). The Fairing has FZ1 on it, but the Owner's Manual calls it a FZS1000T/FZS1000TC. Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks folks.

Oops. Apologies, Fazersharp. Certainly no offence meant. I'm defo in no place to do that - I'm a newbie. The 1000 came up and I couldn't resist. The 600 did me real proud the 15 months I rode her (still got her - garaged for now). Took me round the Pyreness in May (see my profile pic) and up and around central England without a murmur. I plan doing more touring so the 1000 seemed logical.

As for wife/girlf. I'd have swapped the last one for a pair of Metzlers! I couldn't find a taker so I gave her away in the end. Right - over to the intro page. . .
