FZS600 Fazer / My Beloved Fazer Has Gone.......
« on: 31 July 2012, 07:50:36 pm »
All my own doing. I finally chopped my Fazer in for a new CBR600F. I know, I know, please dont berate me. I am sad enough as it is. While the Honda is a great bike it does seem to lack the character of the old Fazer. All see everywhere now is Fazer's, are they ganging up on me!
I shall never forget Goldie, especially that last time at Brands when we ate loads of far newer, faster bikes for breakfast (yes, I know it's not a race......).
To whoever gets hold of my old bike, please look after it, and it'll serve you well.
Looking for a good con FZS.........

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Perhaps a Silly Question on This Forum!
« on: 23 January 2012, 06:17:49 pm »
I have a really nice 99 FZS600 which I have loved for a few years now. I commute on it, track day it, and enjoy doing most of my own spannering on it (see FZS 600 forum).
At the weekend I saw a low mileage (3500) 2001 FZS1000 in mint condition and suddenly decided I needed all that extra power.
Would you recommend the trade up?
What do I need to look for when buying secondhand?
What will I miss about the 600?
Any thoughts appreciated.

ARRRRHHHH Feck! Turns out some of the shims had become unseated and valves were not closing properly.
No compression, no start, loads of grief! Thanks to Steve Slocombes!!

I gave up in the end..... I have taken bike into Slocombes in Neasden, London. No news yet. Thanks to all advice and offers of help. I have been on a steep learning curve with the 4 cylinder Yamaha. The last bike I rebuilt was a xr250 honda (the first was a 2 stroke Garreli 50 many moons ago!)it was much simpler in those days. Tool collection and knowledge has grown a bit......for the next time! I will report diagnosis from Steve at Slocombes.

Checked timing again.... I am sure I am right ( I think), if it was 180 out the dots would'nt line up when crank is at tdc, would they?
I may have to give up and let the pros do it. Cant be with out the bike much longer!

Thanks all, a few things to look for. Not gonna get a chance to check till Saturday. I am feeling more positive though, thanks!

Fitted new barrel. pistons and head. Triple checked timing.
Put the rest of it together. Can I get it to start? Can I f#ck!
What is most common mistake a hobby spanner monkey like me gets wrong? :'(

I am beginning to wish I had  titled this  thread differently! Todays the day to sort timing out.
Will be taking  great care this time. I can`t bear driving my car any longer.

Nearly rebuilt (again). I got new top end from DK in Stoke(ish). I am going to take plenty of time to get timing right!
Any top tips much appreciated...

ST was great. I have thrown the Fazer round a track a few times and would want a bike that could do that at least as well.
I think the ST may not be quite as easy but the power was great....(and its a Triumph!).

General / Re: What did you do to your bike today?

Sprayed up new cylinder head, cleaned pistons, ordered some more bits from AJ Sutton. My brother says it will never run again. I will prove him wrong! :lol

Thanks Flying Scotsman but I am sorted. Went to DK in Stoke yesterday. Got all the bits and will try again. Cant believe this is all because of a sheared spark plug!

Due to badly set up engine ( :o by me!) I need cylinder head, and one piston as a minimum. Might take whole engine if easier.

Yeah, rushed it as you describe..... Will take more time next time. Engine half stripped again!

Finally got bike back together. She started, sounded a bit rough. I thought must need a bit of a run....... Dont mistake fuel problem for timing problem I said to myself but carried on! Only later when oil was coming out of the exhaust drain hole did I think somethings not right. Ah well, hole in no 4 piston, start again. Note to self- double double check timing....

So, after snapping a spark plug in half (while still in the head), I am very close to getting it back together. After a short delay with a gasket (see elsewhere) the head and cam shafts are back in and cover on. While the Fazer has been off the road I had a test ride on Triumph 1050 Sprint ST. I love my Fazer but the Triumph was a great bike.......I might just have to have two bikes. Just dont tell the family....

If only I took more time!!! Off set tab is actually the 'UP' mark! When its the correct way is says UP, 'simples'. Back to Mech School for me!

FZS600 Fazer / Head Gasket Question
« on: 10 November 2011, 11:26:20 am »
I stupidly removed head gasket without checking which way it goes back on. I have of course got replacement but noticed it is not quite symetrical.
If you lay gasket down as if looking forward on the bike there is a little tab just off front close to centre. Looks like it is for another engine model as well (thundercat maybe). But when looking forward should it be to the left or the right? Help!

« on: 06 November 2011, 08:13:03 pm »
I get about 180 miles per tank on the 99 Fazer. Always get about 15 litres in the tank on fill up. Really annoying to fill up though because of filler pipe going into tank a few inches. I understand this was changed with later models.

« on: 06 November 2011, 08:06:35 pm »
I replaced all the seals on my front calipers last year. Dont save a couple of quid by getting pattern parts. I had a mare and ended up buying a set of genuine Yamaha seals. The pattern ones did not seem to fit correctly, maybe inferior rubber.....

Finally.....removed the sheared off remains. Ended up drilling out as much as I dare and then retapping. It has been a song and dance but in a really weird way quite fun! New head gasket on order. Maybe get it all back together over the weekend.

I have BT023's front and rear. Went round Rockingham in the wet, really great confidence boosters!
