My 2008 FZ1 Fazer died just as I arrived at work. I noticed the orange light came on (looked that up, "engine trouble warning light" - erk!!!) and then 15 or seconds later, the console went blank and the engine died some seconds later.

The orange engine trouble light comes on when you switch the bike on (with all the other lights) but then remains on.

Doesn't sound like good news. Off to find a PDF owner's manual...

The error code was 46 (not listed in the manual) which means something is wrong with the power supply. In fact, what was wrong was the generator was f*cked and is currently being replaced. Coincidentally, my trip mileage was 46 at the time so the error code on the dash didn't register as an error code!

Car driving friends of mine can't believe that the new generator parts come to over £800 with VAT.

Having other bits done to the bike at the same time: new exhaust (Beowulf titanium jobby), new OEM rear shock, braided hoses, new clutch and throttle cables, new chain and sprockets, good valet.

Because of this expense, I'll hang onto the FZ1 until 2016 when I'll consider a new bike.

Most of the parts are Nippon Denso and available from other suppliers rather than Yamaha.

For example, the Reg/Rec in the alternator on my Pan is £220 from Honda, the part from a Nippon Denso dealer is less than £20 and they are making a profit on that £20.00.......
