That was me that asked about the spot mounting poles! Thanks Tommy. I thought it was something you made yourself but wanted to know if I could buy them somewhere.

I’ll probably try and replicate your setup. I guess I might have to tap the hole on the bike frame if it’s not already threaded (that’s ok I have tools to do that). When I find a suitable pole though I’m not sure how I will put a thread onto that.

Do you have them mounted on the side of the radiator? I’ve seen someone on here with them mounted on a pole that attaches into a hole in the frame right behind the radiator. I really liked this set up as it doubled up as extra crash protection but I couldn’t find where to buy the poles from.

Yep. We’re all pretty biased here of course but it’s a fab bike. I could trade it in for something more ‘modern’ but why would I bother when it sits outside under a cover for 6 months a year. I also like fixing it up, new brake lines and I might get the seat recovered this year, all for pocket money really while my mates have a brand new MT10 and a newer Ninja.

My only worry is that in the near future emissions regulations will make it unroadworthy and I will have to get something else. As far as I know no other bike has such a popular following or online community.

I can't offer a real solution as I'm not as electrically qualified as others but it must be a small amount of draw on the bulb.

My brother has an older house and he has a chandelier in his living room connected to his ageing electrics.

He put energy saving bulbs in (6 in total) and then when he turns all the lights off the new bulbs slowly illuminate to a dim glow. To remedy this he put back one of the original bulbs.

Just my own 2 cents but like my bro you must have some power running through the lights even in an off position. I've just bought the Chinese spots and switch set-up from fleabay awaiting fitting to the bike and it's entirely possible these cheap switches are a bit naff and let a small amount of power through.

Otherwise someone who knows more will chime in.

I believe it's the coffee that the pedestrian was carrying.

No no, that’s headlight fluid. It should be kept always topped up.

I’ve always seen mine as more of an approximate gauge. I get +-300km per tank and for the first 100 it indicates more than full. Then it drops down to about half. I just fill it up when it the light come on or when I’ve gone over 220km

Having projector spots on the side of the radiator looks fine.

My fear would be that if you did have a low side off or even just drop the bike while at a stand still would the spots not wreck the radiator? This would be bad enough if it were to happen getting it out of the shed or garage or putting it away, but should it happen 50 miles from home you are now in serious trouble with a busted radiator and no way of riding anywhere.

Sorry to flog this horse a little more but i like the mount you have here Tommy. My bike doesn't have this metal pipe attached to the chassis to mount the spots and offer crash protection though. Is this something you welded on yourself?

Yea I read about that in an old thread daarsi. Was it warped discs or did replacing the lines solve the problem?

What pads do you favour then? Im gonna do a complete overhaul of the brakes as I've had the bike 2 years and I've no idea when it was last done.

Thanks for the tips guys. I tried the HEL25 code and it worked (so then I tried HEL50 but alas, no luck)

Even with the promo the Cobra lines are still around 12 quid cheaper so I went with them. Is it unwise to skimp on brake parts? Probably, but they are fully certified and I get the idea from the ebay shop that it's a one man band kinda deal using HEL standard gear at local bloke prices.

Looking around for some braided brake lines as an upgrade for this winter as part of an overhaul of the whole system.

A couple of forum posts from another site say these guys operate under license from HEL and therefore have the same standard/quality. That's great as they are far cheaper. Too good to be true right? Anybody have any experience with these guys?

That's a shame Darrsi, I was following this thread as I was interested in getting something done about my bulbs. Dipped beam is reasonably good but full beam is utterly useless and I was hoping some new bulbs would help.

Can't go wrong for £2.80 delivered. Got one on the way as well in lightning blue.

« on: 16 October 2018, 08:48:48 pm »
Im thinking of which Winter upgrades to do this year and new exhaust is certainly in my top 3. Trouble is i would want a new stainless system up to the header and it gets pricey considering it's an old bike.

Im also in 2 minds about the sound. My standard exhaust is nice and quiet when im warming up in the mornings (respect for the neighbours is a two way street) but i would love to hear a bit more oomph going through tunnels, which the standard exhaust just does not provide.

What did you get? How much did you pay and is it excessively noisy?

FZS600 Fazer / Re: What have you done to your FZS600 bike today
« on: 08 October 2018, 08:31:41 am »
Today I battled my way into the timing cover to check the valve clearances, all in spec... except ONE SODDING VALVE.

Debating leaving it since its <0.01mm too tight, but out of spec is out of spec...

I have the same issue on my 4th cylinder. I decided in the end I would wait until a few more of them were close to spec otherwise I would just have to repeat the process and it's a right ballache getting the cams out. 0.01 isn't going to make much difference.

Who is that mysterious figure in black with the pointy shoes seen upper left. Could he be connected with the equally mysterious looking fazer (intentionally spelt with a lower case "f" as it is not worthy of the correct F )  IMO

Haha, the mystery of the figure in black is easily solved, that's my brother. He rides a 2007 Bandit, standard if not for an aftermarket exhaust which he uses to belittle me in every tunnel we ride through.

From what you describe I am almost certain it is the cam chain/cam chain tensioner. If the tensioner just needs to click one more notch down it's a very easy fix. If you need to replace the chain it's a bit more work. I did it this last spring and made a short video, you can hear whether your problem is the same as mine at the start of the vid.

there are some good, simple ways to get the tensioner to budge that require no tools. Let us know if you want to hear them

Thoughts?

Looks a little amateur to me, I also prefer the standard look, but if a young lad keeps an old bike on the road by doing this why the hell not.

Sounds like a pretty big job bud. I had to replace my cam chain last spring. If I had a lift and the knowledge I would've done an endless chain but in the end I settled for a split link and top end kinda job. Bike flies like s**t off a shovel and idles like a kitten so I can't complain.

This was the biggest engine job I had ever attempted so I had a hundred questions for the old salty dogs on here and I got a concise reply every time. You obviously had some prior experience. Well done mate, enjoy the bike. Post some vids/pics if you can.

Was it a difficult upgrade? It's on my list for this winter. Thinking of getting some braided brake lines and doing a caliper re-build as well. I dont really think my bike or my riding styke needs it i just like tinkering with it.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Reluctant to start after a month in the sun
« on: 14 July 2018, 01:14:09 pm »
Yes it started in the end and after warm up it was back to normal, just very reluctant initially. I think the culprit was empty carb bowls due to evaporation (maybe also deposits on the jets) and also a feature of the fuel pump that it only runs for 5 seconds after turning the key. in future I will turn the ignition on and off until the pump stops priming.

@Daviee - I did not know that, handy information. Next time I'll follow your tip.

@BBROWN - You're probably right, luckily it idled and revved up well after the initial starting problems so hopefully any deposits were flushed through.
