« on: 28 April 2021, 09:51:29 am »
Right,

I've charged the battery.  It's reading 12.6v with ignition on and then jumps up to around 13.4 with the ignition off.  I guess it needs a little time to settle as I tested it straight after taking it off charge.

I'll keep testing over the coming days to see how much it discharges with and without use.

FZS600 Fazer / Dead Battery?
« on: 23 April 2021, 11:01:50 pm »
Bike laid up over winter during which time I forgot to charge it so it did go flat.

Been using it since beginning of month.  13mile journey each way.  On one journey I used the heated grips.  As I got near work the dials stopped working on idle but came back with revs.  Instantly thought battery was flat from using grips.

When I went to return home the bike was flat.  Wouldn't start.  Had enough power to attempt to turn over but did a couple of turns before making an odd buzzer type sound.
Push started it and it was fine on the way home.

Charged battery and all was good for last fortnight.

Used the bike yesterday no issues.

Tonight it's flat again and doing the same thing.  Couple of turns before the odd noise.

Is this common with Fazers and low batteries.  When I've previously flattened the battery it's been totally dead.

My concern is that I've an electrical fault draining the battery.  I actually hope it's just that the battery is past it's best.  Could be the original one fitted.  2001 plate with 11k miles.

All sorted, chain and sprockets fitted for an hours labour at £35 + VAT.

I'm happy with that.

Given my circa 1.5k miles a year I'm hoping it's not something I'll be having to do again for some time.

Ordered a DID Heavy duty chain with JT Sprockets.

Having a Bridgestone Battlax BT23 fitted to to the rear.  £130 fitted which I think is pretty reasonable.  They are going to fit the chain and sprockets whilst it's in.  Presumably for extra hours labour no doubt.

Looking at the DID kits they offer a quiet version and a silent version.

Do they actually make a difference?  Would you tell once riding?

Is the gold chain purely cosmetic?

The rear tyre is shot also so I guess it makes sense to do the whole lot in one go.

Had an advisory on the rear socket today. Only got 12k on the clock.

Is this normal wear?

Any advice on replacement, is it worth going up or down teeth?  Any brands to avoid?

Is it an easy job to replace? I've no way of splitting the chain so is it possible to replace without doing this?

« on: 19 January 2021, 12:47:35 am »
Your damage sounds to be pretty much on a par to what I suffered when i binned mine coming out a petrol station at low speed.

My experience is:-

I put a dent in the tank from where the handlebar hit it.  I spoke to somebody who said in reality it couldn't be pulled out.  In the end I had it filled and sprayed.  Cost about 80 quid and you cannot tell.  The paint codes are no longer recognised these days but they have the ability to scan your current paint and they can mix it to match. Like what you can in B&Q etc...  The match is perfect.
It's not shrunk or cracked as yet.

The front fairing frame does bend as mine did, I didn't notice until months later.  However it's about half an hour job to remove everything and expose the frame.  I removed it, put it in a vice and using a 6ft length of box section steel levered it back straight.

Front fairing for me was a punt on one from Ebay that comes from Poland.  About 120 quid.  Quality replica.  The only difference being the back of it is rough fibreglass and not smooth like the original.  When fitted you don't see much of this.  Everything aligns as it should.

Probably cost me around 400 quid in total to completely restore her back to pre accident.  That included replacing indicators, mirrors, alternator cover etc...

After thinking more I'm going to strip it down again and this time remove it.  Hopefully it'll straighten as suggested with a vice and crowbar.  After all it bent one way so it'll surely go back the other way.

FZS600 Fazer / Where To Get Headlight/Front Fairing Frame
« on: 17 November 2020, 09:56:16 am »
Back early this year my Boxeye rather inexcusably fell over outside a petrol station.

After lovingly restoring her with the help of some of you guys all has been well until....

My mate says to me, why is your front fairing lop sided.  I though he was having a laugh at first but no, it's higher on one side than the other.  Having just stripped it all down thinking I'd not lined it up correctly I can now see the issue.
The headlight/fairing frame is bent.  Where it comes from the stock it has two arms, the top one veers off to one side so it's out of alignment.  The fits with the side it fell on.
I've tried persuading it with a lump hammer but it's quite tough metal.

So...anybody have one spare of know where I can get one.  Found one on flea bay but not brilliantly priced and it's as scabby as hell so it'll need powder coating.
I think I'm right in saying the Foxeye one is different so I'm limited in the years of bikes I can source one from.

Any help would be appreciated.

That sounds about right in terms of the revs to get it to register.

Other than that its a cost effective replacement but factor in spraying costs.
And decals

I found a place online that did decals.  They were absolutely spot on.

I purchased the boxeye version of the Ebay link that's been posted.  The quality is pretty good but beware of a couple of things.  The inside isn't smoothed off and is a rough fibreglass look.
The mounting screws points to the frames were a different size to the original so the screws didn't fit.

It's a doddle to fit. Plug and play in the connection box under the tank.
Two wires - one to pick up an ignition feed. The other picks up the camshaft sensor which is accessible behind the seat lock panel. Identifying the correct colour wire can be the issue. It's referred to as grey or white but it's actually yellow

In the Lincs area the threshold is lower.  You need I think 2 years experience.

What's more is they give you the bike for the time you are on call, and all the appropriate weather gear.

No requirement to be member of any advanced group or qualification.

Yes it picks up the feed from the Camshaft sensor.

So not moving = no signal.

It's when you come to a stop and not sure if you've gone into first or left it in second.
The neutral light helps but how many of us have bikes that like to skip neutral.

I've fitted a 'modern' Chinese style one. I mainly wanted it to stop me going for 7th gear.
It works really well and the only downside I would say is it doesn't display the gear when stationary.
For 30 quid I can't complain and fitting is straightforward.

If you mean it does a series of clicks for a few seconds after ignition is turned on then yes that's perfectly normal.

Mine does it anyway.

If it helps I recently replace the front fairing with one of those off Ebay.  I did like for like Boxeye.  Good quality.  The only thing you'll notice is the inside is rough fibreglass as opposed to smooth.

Hi there,

You're just down the road from me. I live in Louth but work and am from Grimsby.
Just over a year ago I paid 1400 for a 2001 with 8.5k on the clock. Totally original and immaculate.
With delivery included you're not paying over the odds in my opinion.
I've made numerous modest upgrades to mine so if you need any tips etc drop us a PM

They are a good option as a replacement as they help to prevent corrosion from water ingress.

My reservation is the quality of the ones you propose.  They are from China, the steel will be of dubious quality and soft as hell.  You'll round these putting them on let alone taking them off in a few years.

By all means go for the idea but look for some decent stainless ones.

Finally tested it today. Bit of a pain setting it up on a straight empty road but once done it works pretty well. It's not super accurate but at least it's telling me when I'm in 6th which is all I wanted.

For 30 quid and half hours effort I'm happy.
