General / the old mans Ducati
« on: 02 February 2016, 09:32:21 am »
While up at my Dads sorting out the master cylinder he has just finished building his Ducati 750 F1 replica for racing in the classic series.

He made the frame, exhaust, swingarm, tank, seat, linkages etc pretty much everything bar the wheels/suspension + engine.  He sprayed it last week.  Just needs to fit the screen and its away.

Would turn heads if you Road Register it :)

General / fake Chinese Brembo copies
« on: 01 February 2016, 07:58:13 pm »
Curiosity got the better of me...

The reason I bought this were two fold really. I wanted to see what they were like and also, my std master cylinder (and lever) is scuffed up following a crash by the previous owner. If this turned out ok then its win/win, if not its £20, no biggy. Everyone is so quick to call them shit without seeing them, same happened with the pazzo levers years ago.

I have used the Chinese Pazzo copies before, had a few sets.  They are cheap, well made and easy to get hold of.  I got the first pair because my garage used to have a split front, back with a std door between.  I was risking breaking my OEM levers so got the cheap ones to avoid damage.  I was impressed with them so got a few.

I have seen the master cylinders before on alibaba etc but never really found any decent write ups about them.  Forum guys all tell you that they are death traps made of cheese and all have a "mate" who almost died just ordering them.  I did find a few articles but they were the older (2006 ish) copies of the earlier brembo units.  They found that they couldn't get any pressure in them, fluid leaking past the nipple threads, seals not sealing, return circuits being blocked by the seals etc which isn't great, but 10 years on things must be better right?

For £20 I took a punt just to see really, whats the worst that can happen?

We are talking about these:

This is a copy of the Brembo 19 RCS 18x20 master cylinder.  The sites say they are CNC billet but they are in fact just cast.  The real Brembo (I have one for direct comparison) isn't CNCd either, its forged but does have some CNC surfaces on it.

It comes with 1 line banjo bolt, bleed nipple with dust cap, reservoir, pipe and clips.

The real Brembo has two holes on the underside to accept a microswitch for the brake light, the copy also has these in the same position so the std microswitch should fit fine.

The lever is cnc'd and isn't too bad at first inspection.  It's a fold up type like the original but for some reason the copy uses a bolt and a pin to stop it folding up in normal use.  The real one uses a bolt and nut to simply clamp the two halves together.

The dust cap on the piston doesn't fit in any way and was supplied just flapping about on the piston actuator pin.  Not really confidence inspiring.  A few pulls on the lever and it has a somewhat rough action but it's dry so lets not be hasty.

Here you can see the lever "hinge".  It's exactly the same setup as the original but has an extra pin and the bolt is flush at the back.  The real Brembo has a longer bolt with a nut on the back and no pin.

The print etc is nice and clean.

It uses a bushed (steel) pivot which was nice to see, I was expecting it just to be plain...

The copies main pivot is a large gold aluminium pin with a flange at the top and c-clip on the bottom. The real Brembo has a black hollow steel pin that is flush at the top in a recess and has a nut on the bottom.  I did wonder why they would go to the trouble of using the oversized gold pin on the copy but a look at the Brembo catalogue shows the MotoGP/top end ones use a gold pin like this (although that is sunk into the body rather than sat on top).  Presumably those are TiNi coated.

So, whats it like inside

Removing the lever is easy enough, C-Clip off and pull the pin out.

The surfaces are nice and smooth with decent edges etc.  The piston is behind the stop plate and a cir clip.  The "cup" protruding out is the socket that accepts the actuator pin from the lever (that allows the 18x20 ratio adjustment).  The surface is proper rough (thats clean there, no grease etc) and when pressing the lever you can feel the actuator pin snagging on these machining ridges.

On the bench out of focus is the actuator pin and dust seal (which wont actually fit anywhere).  On the real one this presses in on top of the cir clip but you can clearly see on the copy there is just not enough room for it.

Lets pull it apart:

This is the piston, seals, stop plate and return spring.  The piston looks ok, not a brilliant finish but ok.  It has some scratches on the large diameter sections.  The seals just don't fit it though.  It's not like a bad tolerance either, they are probably 1mm too big for the shaft diam and they also move back/forth!  The stop plate is a standard stamped washer, about 2mm thick.

The bore is actually very good apart from one little detail.

The reason for the scratchy feel when pulling the lever, and the scratches on the piston is here:

The large hole for the reservoir line is simply drilled from the outside and then thats it.... its burs are in tact!.  In fact all the drilled holes leading to the main chamber are bured.  I cleaned them up and the piston scratches.  Feels much better, but not great.  The piston+seals are not that brilliant fit wise.

Measuring the seal lips and return/res circuit holes it looked ok, nothing alarming.. So nothing left but to bleed it up.

I had a set of calipers/lines to use so I can do this off the bike as I didn't fancy fitting it only to have to refit my std one if they were crap.

So, here it is on my "bench rig":

I have to say, with the master cylinder having a bleed nipple these have to be the easiest I have ever done.  Baring in mind the master cylinder, lines (full length - the std ones of my fazer in fact) and callipers were empty of oil, it all came up in a few mins.

No leaks at all so I left it tie wrapped on all night to see if it leaked in the morning.  It didn't.  They feel ok, a bit like the std ones but you need to pull the lever about an inch before anything happens, the piston isn't being held in the right position, it needs to move back about 2mm or so.

The reservoir is tiny however, its like a small rear one off a pit bike.

So, I fit them to the bike and went for a spin.  I have no micro-switch for this so had to remember to simultaneously use the back brake to get the light on.

First off they are massively more powerful than std.  The first inch movement aside, when they are on the feel is really good, adjusting power is very nice, buttery smooth and one finger is enough (I need two on std).

The hinged lever, I mentioned it has a pin to stop it rotating.  This worked out, I had to keep pushing it back in, confidence inspiring.  I found if I slowly pulse the lever while its applying force to the disks I can get it to come back to the bars (takes about 15 slow small pumps to do this) indicating the seals are not sealing (or maybe they are moving on the piston as they are sloppy).

To tale this to the Nth degree, I went to my dads and we made a new piston.  This was machined correctly and the correct diam for the seals and its held in the right place to eliminate the inch of lever travel before it does anything.  So, the seals now seat properly and can't move fore/aft.  Straight away just fitting the standard seals you can see its better, the lips stand up proud for a start.  A test in the bore and yeah, silky smooth.

The dust seal that doesn't fit anywhere, we corrected this by replacing the 2mm washer stop plate with a thinner steel shim and used a slightly thinner but larger (and better made) cir clip.  This allowed us to fit the dust seal under the cir-clip so the whole lot is held firmly in place.

The hinged lever, I removed the pin and replicated the original Brembo setup of simply having a longer bolt with a nut at the back and clamping it up.  Works very well, like a proper Brembo and doesn't require the extra hole drilling and pin inserting.  Odd that they do that.

Remember the bushed pivot on the lever?  Measuring it and its 8.25mm bore at the bottom, 7.9mm at the top.... Impressive.  The gold alloy pivot pin is 7.9mm so is sloppy at one end.  The holes on the master cylinder are both 8.25mm so its pretty sloppy.  So we are maknig a new pin and bush, boring out the master cylinder holes to get a decent, slop free action.

With these mods it now feels just like the real Brembo RCS I had to compare to, very impressive really.

It's odd that the Chinese seem to get 90% the way there then just seem to not bother.  It wouldn't take anything on their part to correct the issues, its much more work to correct them after the fact.  If they did that then they would be a very good product.

I have seen that they are now doing replicas of the latest MotoGP ones with the recessed TiNi pivot pin that does look like it is CNC'd but they are £60 or so.  Too rich for my blood.  Might see what Santa brings.

Would I recommend one?

No.  Not unless you can sort them out like this.

Selling a complete caliper, useable pads, hanger and torque arm off a gen 1 fazer 1000.

This has been taken off my current bike as I have replaced it with R1 bits while fitting an R1 rear wheel.  This is undamaged, taken off my daily commuter and is fully working, not off a bike being broke down/unused

This was in service as recently as yesterday, pads are good, full working order.

Job lot for £35 delivered, uk only.

I am not interested in making as much money as I can (I have seen these offered for double this price), £35 for me is what it is worth - I have got things from members of this site cheaper than I could have elsewhere so just trying to give something back.

I would like it to go to someone who is wanting to replace their 600 calliper, if you are looking to buy cheap then sell it on for a higher price then that would not be in the spirit of this sale.

If no one is interested I will just keep it as I am not desperate to sell.

Not the cleanest, I simply ran a cloth over it so I don't get filthy hands while handling it, it would benefit from a proper clean :)

Anywho, there it is.  Hope it goes to a good home!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / R1 rear wheel in a Gen 1
« on: 19 December 2015, 07:55:48 pm »
Straight in, no messing, don't know what all the fuss is about!

I wanted a 6" rear wheel and to loose the torque arm (hate the look of them).  Purely cosmetic.

Well, ahem...  Took about 5 hours in the end!

I had an r1 rear wheel with no disc/sprocket but otherwise in really good condition.  Firstly, the discs are not swapable, so I got an old rusty R1 disc, sorted.  I also got an R1 rear caliper and hanger, after eyeballing the swingarm it was my intention to weld blocks above/below the R1 hanger to mimick the way the R1 is setup to capture the rear hanger block.

Rusty disc, waiting to be skimmed/cleaned

Popping it all in the fazer today though this wasn't going to happen because on the R1 wheel the disk is waaay inside the wheel in comparison to the fazer, this meant the hangar is about ( well is in fact, 18mm ) off the swingarm, the blocks would have to span this gap, not great.

So, plan B was to weld an extension onto the R1 hangar and attach it to a pickup on the inside of the swingarm.

So, first things first, make the extension. Here we see it in the final stages on the 6-axis CNC milling machine.  This is currently opening the slot that the pickup will ride in (essentially the front end of the torque arm).

This is how it fits on the R1 caliper hanger.

TiG Welded in place.

Prepare to be bored..ed?

Setup to start boring out the extension to fit the spindle.  All CNC of course.

Action shot, spinning...

Done,  Recess is there to accept a press fit spacer that will take up the extra 6mm or so on the right of the hanger (18mm total gat, 12mm plate = 6mm to fill.

Because you don't want spacers falling all over the gaff this will be pressed into the recess and be pretty much a permanent fixture, nice.

Dry fit, this is how it fits on the swingarm, the slotted torque arm can be seen, the pickup (or stop) has been tig welded in place here, all fits perfectly.

So, all fitted

Much more gentlemanly

Ran out of time a bit (had to rush home to take the missus to work, so really I need to take all this off and paint it as its currently bare ally.

But, riding it home it felt great, just the same as with the std rear.

General / Braking performance
« on: 07 December 2015, 09:13:57 am »
After having superbikes etc I had never really been impressed with the brakes on the fazer.  They were not too bad after swapping to rebuilt calipers, got a bit better after fitting braided hoses, "getting there" with new pads etc but to think they have the same setup as an R1 I always felt there was something amiss.  They were also always a bit inconsistent.

Put new discs on at the weekend (off a very low mileage R1) and they are now excellent.  I replaced the disks because they were very worn with a 2mm ridge on the leading edge leaving the discs probably around or below the min thickness.  Rising to work this morning they are very strong and every pull feels exactly the same.

General / Idle Hands
« on: 06 December 2015, 12:22:35 am »
Well, missus out and I found some foam board while clearing the garage out after replacing my front discs...

Started to make a pattern for some winglets/side panels that I am tentatively planning on making from carbon fiber at some point...

Just trying to get a basic shape really but here is the fruits of an hours labour while ducking in the house to check on the little 'un.

I am liking the shape so far, I wasn't after totally flat wings, not sure if I will extend it down the radiator as one piece or have it two piece.  I was going to use expanded polystyrene but its just too messy to sand down, it gets everywhere and er'indoors wouldn't be too happy so foam board and a razor/hot glue gun is all I can really use at the mo.  Final shaping will be with body filler and sanding .... outside (apparently).

General / New swingarm....
« on: 26 November 2015, 09:08:00 pm »
My dad finished the swingarm for the YZF, fitted and ready for its trip tomorrow.

Looks proper trick, just need to rustle one up for my Fazer  :b

And here it is in all its glory.
Its going to the NEC as its on display for winning the Thundersport GB Superbike championship.  If your going be sure to take a gander and possibly chat about boilers/fires... :)

Wondered if an R1 fairing would fit a fazer...

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Gen 1 electric issue
« on: 04 November 2015, 10:34:24 am »
Hey All,

Just wondered if anyone has had this issue and solved it.

I have found that occasionally my clock on the dash resets to 1:00 (which means it has had the power disconnected).  I noticed recently that if I stick an indicator on it is that that causes the indicators to flick left/right and the power cut happens, it is only momentary and comes back working fine within a second while riding and the indicator works correctly so no real problems.

Flicking the main beam on can also cause this (needles drop to zero, time/trip resets) but everything flicks back straight away with no real interruption to the bike running or lights etc.  Oddly once this has happened, any further use of indicator doesn't cause the issue within a few mins (ie if I put indicators on I get the volt drop, but if I cancel, put them back on etc its fine).

I took my clocks/panels etc off last night to check earth etc but unfortunately my volt meter battery was flat so all I could really do was clean up connections on whatever I could get quick access to - battery ordered so should be able to pinpoint it when it arrives...

I suspect that it will be a dodgy connection and maybe the extra load adding indicator/main beam causes an issue.

Interestingly if I try to replicate the indicator problem with the engine not running it never happens, it seems that I only see the issue with it running.  I also seem to be going through a fair amount of dash bulbs, I have had to replace 5 bulbs in the last few months, which may/may not be related.

Diesels and Lawnmowers (Bike racing n things) / Thundersport GB
« on: 21 October 2015, 09:45:27 am »
My brother won the Thundersport GB superbike championship by winning the first race at the Cadwell round at the weekend on his YZF 750.  Plans for next year are already underway with a new "factory" swingarm and a set of flatslides.  Might make it as quick as a Fazer 1000!

I am wondering about this paint job on my Fazer...

Little cracks on the center of the tyre.  Its not been on long, a couple of months - maybe 4k commuting miles, its a Michelin PR4 GT.  I have seen old ones with cracks but not new...

Feels fine.

« on: 16 September 2015, 09:15:43 am »
He had a belting weekend, qualified 3rd  for his race and overtook Ryan Farquhar to lead it for a while!(No. 47 in the pic - Ryan is on pole on the Harris Yamaha 1200 No 77)  He said coming onto the straight in the lead with the spectator lined track and all the camera flashes was awesome.

Did well in the Senior where he lined up with McGuinness, Dunlop, Harrison etc it was immense.

The orange bib was because it was his first time at Scarborough for the gold cup - his first time at the circuit so was really good to do as well as he did.

Eagle eyed folk might remember my bro's bike he built from a 6 page spread in Performance Bike magazine a few months ago.

Any android gamers might like to try a game my friend has made, a superhero based avoider.  It does feature a character on a bike, but its black.  Apparently when he made it red it was just too damn fast!

Popped into Raceways in Fleetwood on Sat as a mate was picking up a bike, they have one of those MT-09 Sport Trackers in with Akrapovic pipes etc, looks really nice!

Anyone had a do on one?

They also have one of those retro XJR 1300's, looks a bit meh in the flesh...

Popped into Sports Direct at the weekend, they are selling Campri Thermal Under...wear! vests and leggings 90% off (£3.99 each)

I got 2 tops and 1 pair of leggings

Used them this morning, the leggings are great, felt much warmer than usual. The vests...meh they are warm but they are not that long.  They are not "Apollo Creed training on the beach" short but about the same length as a t-shirt - which would leave me with a "plumbers arse" concern if I tuck behind the screen :) .  I wore one over my usual second skin type top and was pretty warm.

General / LED's in clocks
« on: 18 November 2014, 09:21:09 am »
Well, after nearly 2 weeks of having the LED's in the clocks I was a bit disappointed.  Initially they were great but the first bulb went after 4 days, I replaced it (I got 10 bulbs in my pack), the same one went again a few days later and on Friday night one started to blink on/off while stuck in the traffic during the M6 closure - eventually giving up the ghost a few miles from home, leaving me with a single clock light.  I replaced those but one of them wasn't working last night so this morning I put another in.

It wouldn't work, so tried another and that worked.  I then realised that the one that was now working was one of the original "blown" bulbs I had replaced earlier in the week.  I took a closer look and found that the T5 LED bulbs cause the plastic bulb holders to flex when they are inserted (well the ones I have do) because the plastic chassis is thicker than the std glass bulbs.  It's not much but you can see it, when it flexes it makes the little copper contacts lower than with normal bulbs so the contact on the PCB is less.  I bent them up slightly with a razor blade and now they all work, even the ones I thought had blown.

Will see how they last.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Positioning of screen critical?
« on: 08 November 2014, 02:33:17 pm »
Hi all,

This week I replaced my bulbs with LED ones in my clocks.  To do this I took my screen off to get access to the clock mount nuts and after refitting etc I have found that wind noise is significantly lower than before!

I will take a semi-educated guess that its not the LED bulbs...

The screen was fitted fine before I took it off so I cannot really put my finger on why it is now providing better airflow to my bonce.

Nothing else has changed, same lid, same earplugs, same clothing, same route!  The only thing I can think of is that the screen bolts are a bit mismatched in size, 2 are quite long, I am wondering if I had those in a position that they were hitting something under the fairing and pulling it out, even so thats a long shot because if it was significant it would look funny.

It's not a "is it better? nah? well maybe?" its significantly better, no constant roar.. well ROAR like before, helmet not getting buffeted about as much etc.

Ah well, free upgrades!! :)

Is it too early to sign off with Merry Christmas yet?

Hi,

I am thinking about getting a waterproof over jacket as my one piece is a bit haggard and using it today I found that the legs are a bit short when I wear my leg armour under it ( the last time I used it

I have some waterproof over leggings that work really well (karrimor ones - they have no matching jacket).  I had a SPADA one years ago but it always let water in at the zip...

Just wondering if anyone here has a good over jacket one they would recommend.

Cheers!

Not counting vans, trucks, service vehicles etc over 90% of cars I pass have a single occupant I am very surprised by the lack of bikes on my daily commute.  What keeps people in their cars then?

Hot summer days like today I would expect loads on the roads, leaving the car at home, but nothing, I didn't pass a single biker on the motorway today and the opposite side of the M6 only yielded 4 bikes going the other way (and 3 of those I recognize from my all year riding).

It's not exactly a biking black spot here either, if I leave work late I see stacks of them enjoying the evening sun.
