FZS600 Fazer / Stuck Clutch
« on: 05 February 2017, 09:47:40 am »
The bike's been off the road for a month due to weather and work and stuff. The last time I did this in December the clutch plates seized up. I didn't notice until I put it into gear when there was a clunk and the engine stalled. Fortunately that seemed to cure it. It's happened again but before I try the jamming it into gear malarkey, is there anything else I could do firstly to fix it and secondly to stop it happening again?

You say the current went down to 1.5amps. What current? If it's the current into the battery then I'm not surprised it falls as things get switched on because the regulator is sending power to them as well as the battery. So long as it is still charging the battery I wouldn't worry. If it went to -1.5 A then I'd worry.
If you've got both headlights on and the heated grips you've got to be drawing 12 amps or more out of the regulator and it's still managing to charge the battery..........

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Tyres?

I did a bit of googling and those Shinko tyres don't seem to be significantly cheaper than anything else, you could get a Pirelli for roughly the same price.

Anyone tried Shinko tyres?

Nope and won't - unless i find a need to do 7000 miles in a straight line on a cruiser or genuinely go off road. Just my 2p....

Yep I think you're right Frosties, you can pick them up cheap tho'. So what's the best budget tyre? Has anyone tried Maxxis?
Maxxis are OK judging from the couple I've had on previous bikes. Actually I do tend to 7000 miles in a straight line so maybe I'll investigate Shinkos.

How do front facing average speed cameras work at night? It must be really difficult to take a picture of someone's front number plate with two bright light and infra red sources either side.

Just out of idle curiosity,no other reason.

You could unbolt the footpeg bracket from the bike then put it on a bench and really twat it with a hammer.

I wouldn't mind betting that a reasonably sized motor factors could supply piping that size in a clear plastic/nylon type material for a fraction of the price of the Yamaha replacement pipe and the plus side is you can see what is actually in the pipe being clear/see through.
Probably get it from B&Q or if not Ebay will certainly have clear piping.

When reversing the bike down my alleyway between two houses i could see the upper/high beam light flashing on, along with the high beam dash display light, anything between a split second or a few seconds, then it'll go off again.
Was the lower filament in the bulb going off? Mind you as someone else said, the alternator should be able to cope with that.

Wot Bludclot said.

So on high beam you have both lights on and just one on low beam or both on low? Can you measure the current being drawn from the battery with the engine off? It should be about 5 amps per bulb,so I would expect 10A with both bulbs on. Obviously you're going to have more than this but if it's close to a multiple of 5A then your headlight might not be turning off the low beam when you switch to high. If the new switch doesn't cure it (and I'd try to measure the current before and after the switch change) then you're going to have to trace it through.

I got a cheap pair of specs from the interwibble made to my prescription with a thick plastic frame. I found my normal specs were getting bent too much by the helmet until the springy doodad in the hinge failed.
As for steaming up yes they do a bit. I've got a Pinlock which helps but isn't perfect. An adhesive insert would be better. I find that the glasses mist up when they're cold so it's a case of ride for 400 yds, open visor a tad until they clear, close it and repeat until they warm up. Either that or put the helmet on in the house so you retain a bubble of warm air for a while. Putting washing up liquid on them helps and it's no hassle to replace it every day or so.

The 2002 Renoooo Laguna had the following steps to change a headlight bulb

1. Jack up BOTH front wheels
2. Remove BOTH front wheels
3. Remove BOTH wheel arch liners
4. Remove front bumper
5 remove headlight
6 change bulb
7. put it all back together again.

No wonder people never change them.

2003 diesel Laguna you only have to remove the battery for the nearside bulb. But when you replace the battery you have to enter the radio code and calibrate the electric windows.

And then you get people who can't drive in the sprinkling of snow. Some eejit doing 30 mph on a perfectly clear lane of the dual carriage way. OK the other lane was snowy but come on! Then a bit later I had someone right up my arse on a snowy side street, until I went round the roundabout sideways.  :lol

True. It's like that stupid law about not hogging the middle lane. I drive about 100 miles daily on the M5 and rarely ever see a marked police car, a few unmarked ones but almost never marked ones. Not unless there's an accident, then suddenly they're like wasps round a jam pot.

I nearly pulled out in front of someone driving around with only sidelights on the other day. The vehicle behind it had it's headlights on rendering it almost invisible.

If you get a new cable, don't buy any old shit, get a proper Yamaha one.
I got one from Wemoto for my old ZZR once. Perfectly ok except the outer was about half an inch too long. Caused no end of grief trying to fit it I can tell you.

Talking about insurance, does anyone else think that if cyclists are gonna play with the big boys on the road, shouldn't they have insurance as well?
Bearing in mind they continue to dangerously jump red lights, undertake lorries and buses, and generally throw caution to the wind on a daily basis!
There is a petition going around that calls for insurance and road tax for cyclists. I'm in two minds about it. Sure they are bloody annoying especially the ones with black bikes and clothing and no lights but on the other hand it would be a shame if the last free form of transport were to disappear.

Yup, youtube is very handy. Changed the air filter on my Xsara Picasso last weekend. Thank goodness it's only every 30k or something. Why they put it over the back of the engine with only 3 inches clearance I do not know. Anyway, without youtube the job took me an hour and lots of swearing. With youtube about 20 minutes and I only swore when I dropped the allen key on the floor.
And what you say about access to headlight bulbs is good news. It makes a mockery of the continental requirement to carry spare bulbs if you can't get to the damn things without a full toolkit and a requirement to dismantle half the front end of the car.

2 grand or 40 grand makes no odds, I think he thought safer in the middle of soho square than most places it's busy and I've got an alarm and a security chain a 2 grand R1 is just as much a thief magnet and I've seen stolen recovered fazers on salvage sites so we're all at risk from similar scumbags.
It's not the thievery I was really meaning. I was more thinking the chances of getting your bike damaged in a city must be higher due to the concentration of traffic. Hence why I'd only use a cheapish bike.

Nasty pieces of work,,but knowing the risks, who the hell leaves a nice bike in the open,,,bloody idiots
You should be able to but I agree it's stupid to do so. Why ride a 40k bike in London anyway? If I was commuting into a city centre I'd be on a FZS or some other cheap bike....oh hang on.

A mate of mine called Frank started out on a C70, his mate (dunno his name call him Steve) had a H100 I think. Anyway they used to quite often go for rides round Wiltshire. One day they'd stopped for a fag and Frank said, "Hey, we've just passed Longleat. I've always fancied going round the safari park. What do you say?"
Steve took a long drag on his ciggy, looked hard at the two small bikes and then back at Frank. "Are you fucking mad!"
