what engine cleaning products do you use?
« on: 12 May 2013, 01:05:31 pm »
Fazer needs some major fettling which will include the exhaust coming off and getting a rub down and respray. While it is off I want to clean up the front of the engine which is dirty and dull and also has some furring.  So what is the best product with the best degreasing and cleaning result you have used? Cheers badger

Oddly the best product I've used is probably the Muc-off chain cleaner... I'm sure their other products are probably as good but the chain cleaner is the only one I've bought. If they have a specialised de-greaser I'd hate to think how strong it is haha

I've used Ultra Gunk in the past, but it wasn't really that great for caked on stuff. Cleaned the ally wheels on my car pretty damn well, but wouldn't used it for the front of the bike engine

Lots of people use different products and tools. I use muc off and will not try to take off built up gunk in one go but do it over several applications and rinses whilst been gentle. This is how some of our members clean their bikes:

Muc Off motorcycle degreaser is the best i have used and works a treat on engines. Whatever bits you spray it on though will need a good rinse off afterwards. Follow that with drying the bike off as much as you can and apply a good coating of GT85 or if you are feeling flush ACF50. Wipe off the excess and voila, a nice clean bike. At the risk of stating the obvious though, make sure you don't get any GT85 or ACF50 on your brake components  :\
If i ever get a bit carried away with the GT85 i give the brakes and discs a good clean down with good quality brake cleaner. The Muc Off brake cleaner is also excellent stuff IMO.
Yamaha Fazer 'the only bike you'll ever need' maybe ???

I bought some Astonish engine cleaner from my local Range  (cheap shop) the other day for a pound and gave it a go

I was "Astonished"!

It does say don't use on painted surfaces but after it brought the engine up I used it on the back wheel and it was squeaky clean, literally, when I finished.

I would use sparingly and not leave it on too long but yeah, it did the trick

With this kind of language this here thread should be in the naughty corner.

I've used all sorts of stuff on mine Steve, and there are a couple that I really rate. Sdoc 100 gel cleaner is excellent, quite expensive but does the job really well and does last a while because you don't need to use much for each clean. The other one is Autoglym motorcycle cleaner, bought 5 litres of it on ebay for a reasonable price - good stuff that can be used on any part of the bike

£5 hand car wash, usually found in the closed down petrol station section of your local out of town main road!
Some say...
