New clutch dragging when hot
« on: 06 May 2013, 09:16:46 pm »
Hi,

just fitted a new clutch plates and the thrust crinkly spring to my 2002 600 Fazer. They were EBC plates and soaked in oil for a few hours before fitting as per the instructions on the box. The clutch pressure plate bolts were torqued properly. All went in OK the clutch seemed to release OK before the cover was replaced. Filled with 10w/40 oil and the clutch adjusted via the locknut/screw on the nearside.

Took it for a brief run around the local roads and all was well - better than it was before.

However on the way to work this evening, after about 20 minutes, the clutch started to drag and it became impossible to get neutral. By the time I got to work (after about 40 mins) it was so bad the engine was stalling when I stopped at lights. There was no change in the feel at the lever, and when riding the bike changed up and down OK - just can't get neutral. There was no rattling or unusual noises.

I've just gone down to the bike after it's cooled down for a couple of hours - and it's back to normal. No dragging, can get neutral no problems.

Any ideas? It's stumped me and I'm guessing when I take the cover off nothing's going to be obvious.

cheers.

How old is the clutch cable?
If you don't know maybe it's just worn and needs replacing?
If you replace it make sure you go for an original Yamaha one.

Thanks for the reply, but it's not the cable, that's fine. I'll take a look at the link.

Oddly enough, riding home this morning it didn't happen. I'll take it for a run over the weekend and see if it's settled down. May have just been the plates settling in, but I've never heard of any problems like it before.

Did you put the ball bearing and o ring back with the push rod?

It could also be that the plates needed a little more of a soak hence it's getting better, a few hours is quite sort I normally leave them overnight.

Thanks -  Yes the ball bearing went back and I put a new seal on the push rod. The plates did soak overnight as I had to wait for a new part to turn up that didn't arrive on the day it should.

No not yet, that may be something to look at, but it wasn't touched during the clutch rebuild and was OK before.

I have to say this is intermittent - it seems to be fine now, but I'll take it out over the weekend to see if it re-occurs. It seems more like something is expanding & starting to drag rather than a mechanical fault, say like a loose plate or stuck cable.
