« on: 20 May 2012, 06:28:40 pm »
on my ride out today (still grinning from it :D) my visor got covered in bugs.
is soap and water the best thing to get them off with, or have you found anything better / easier ?

If I am out and about I use the V2 sponges from here http://www.visorvision.co.uk/shop/ very good results and includes polishing cloth in kit.

Quick clean at home I use paper towels soaked in tap hot water.

Proper clean I use a bowl filled with hot water and a squirt of PH neutral hand soap, Fairy contains salt and might damage visor coatings (not recommended for cleaning car for same reason).

soak some kitchen towel with water. cover the visor evenly and allow to stand for 10 or 15 minutes. remove and wipe off dead flies. no scrubbing or rubbing so avoids scratching the visor. but thats just what i do ;)

Works neatly. Minimum effort, time and visor scratching.

Whenever a bug splats on my visor, I remove the visor, throw it away and fit a new one.

Which reminds me - the ashtray is full in my Bentley...

I soak some kitchen roll with glass cleaner and place it over the visor evenly and leave for 5/10 mins then wipe clean works every time.

Another supporter of the damp kitchen roll soak technique here.
If the visor's greasy I'll use washing-up liquid... salt is soluble so doesn't scratch the visor. (The reason you don't use it on vehicles is that it accelerates rusting.)
Soap, on the other hand, can deposit calcium carbonate (same stuff as in abrasive creme cleaners) if you have hard water, which will leave smears or cause scratches.

As you might imagine .. we get trucking loads of bugs down here in Sunny Spain at certain times of the season .. including some really big fat barstewards that can cover your line of sight in one enormous splatter  :eek .

Whenever I can .. I use the same method as Chilly and Hodge (see above) when I do a Rolling Pit Stop, loo, visor, drink, food, fuel and whatever .. and then again once I land back at base.

Wet paper towel over visor, soak for five minutes, lift and wipe, polish with second dry towel .. no damage, roll on  :D

I use baby wipes too, they just work and will clean your helmet, hands, face etc if needed.  Keep a bag under the seat.

Yes, tongue. You don't need food when traveling. Bring water for drinking and eat pure protein off your visor! :)

Haha, actually I just use water or water and soap but no need of waiting more than a few seconds. The NZI Spyder visor is very good, it is like 10 years old and still in very good condition. Cleaning the bike is much harder, I always left it covered with ancient mummys. I even put fork gaitors to avoid the dry mosquitos sanding the seals.

I use Mr Muscle glass and window cleaner but might soak with water first if they're dried on.

Worked a treat. Top tip! Cheers :)
