I think I wrote about it in the old forum, but not sure.

Anyway I found that 170/60 is the recommended size for 5" width rims (like the ones of our fazers) by the tyre manufacturers charts. 160/60 are for 4,5" rims like the ones of SV650. So Fazers came standard with a flattened tyre!

I purchased a 3,5" front rim from a Yamaha TRX850, which will allow 120 front tyres (thanks to the mate HybridYZF for the advise). Soon it will be installed and I will report how it goes but the rear tyre is still quite fresh so it will took a while before I change it.

So I ask anybody to try a 170/60 and tell us how it goes

Thanks

Well, if the contact patch is a bit broader than standard for a 5" rim it certainly doesn't bother me and presumably for normal riding it means the tyre lasts longer. Perhaps for track days a 170 might offer some advantage, but on the road I only just reach the edge of the tread... if it had a steeper profile I'd be paying for tread I'd never use.

A flattened tyre means that the contact patch is larger at the center and smaller at the sides, which is not in the safest thing. Sometimes we all lose grip at the road, so the extra rubber with the proper step would not be a bad idea

Thank you mate.

Today I have seen at the street a BMW R1200S that has the same rim size that our bikes, but BMW sold it with the 170 tyre. It looks much bigger than I expected Probably it is also because the mono-swingarm it has. It looked very nice.

my 98 square eye has a 120 front and 180 rear(maxis) these were already fitted wen i got bike and the rear looks meen and bike handles well alto im no racer! not sure if its on standard rims etc altho they look like standard, when there worn il be going back to the 160 rear mainly because i can get scrubs free from a mate! not riddern a fazer on the standard tyres so cant say if the larger ones are better/worse but bike makers go to huge lengths to get a good ballance rom the factory so messing doesnt always work!

Finally I fitted it  :) . No problem for my bike, but it doesn't have a hugger. First I put a Diablo Rosso, now a Bt021. In fact its real width is closer to 160 than to 180, specially the Pirelli, but the diameter increase is noticeable.
It matchs better with the front TRX wheel (120/70). The time I tried the 120/70-160/60 set the bike worked worse than stock. But I have not idea how a 110-170 pair will match.
Hope it helps.

Does anyone know if a 170 has issues with a rear hugger?

I'm running a 170 on the backand with a hugger. No problems with fitting and in my opinion the bike handles better

I have done 40 000 miles on 120 fronts on standard rim and it is far better than the 110. Although the rear can go to the edge there is always decent rubber on the front. No need to go up a rim size to fit the 120. 170 on the rear should be fine but a 180 is overtyred for the bike but that said n0 problems will really happen apart from an odd shaped tyre. The Fazer just doesn't need that rubber and turns better on a 160. Horses for courses though.

as I run a 1 tooth bigger front sprocket, a new chain of standard length, and new tyre (160 -023) means it rubbed until I mover the hugger forwards. As it is the bobbles rub on the new tyre just fitted. No biggy and not rocket science to sort.

I am currently getting quotes for a set for the fzs600. I read all positives about PR3s, but the trust-able bike shop person says there could be some issue with the PR3s - front tire cupping or something like thata. So looking at all sorts of other models like Angel ST etc, most of them only come in 120/170 (rather than 110/160 that's currently on the bike). I have the hugger too. However I would be worried how the insurance companies would treat the 120/170 tyres, is there a reason for concern?

there was 120/170 tyres on my bike when i got it and i went back to 110/160 and i think the 110/160 are much better because the bike drops into corners so much quicker. i had to adjust how i rode the bike because i was leaning too far because i was used to the 120/170 tyres. i don't think there would be any real advantage with the 170 not for normal road use. they do look cooler though :lol

A matter of taste. I do not know how performs a 120 on the stock rim, but I prefer the extra stability that the bigger wheels have provided, as the bike is jacked up it was a too nervous at high speeds. I do not find it very different at slow cornering though.

The slim stock tyres just were the same ones of the FZ400, Yamaha just threw in the bigger engine and sporty brakes, without taking care of their extra power and weight. I do not know if it was costs saving or really they liked their performance better, but it is weird that Fazers are the only street bike with a 110 front wheel, specially with these powerful brakes and quite heavy weight. Either I do not understand why they did not use 4.5" rear rims instead 5", if they liked the 160 tyres.
