Cheers for the heads up! I'll be extra careful.

I've already tried swapping the coils for different ones, unfortunately it made no difference.

Tonight however whilst tinkering I noticed the fuel pump does not seem to be pressurising, as it keeps ticking (slowly) more than it ever used to before with the ignition on.  Further inspection showed that there is definitely fuel leaking out of the carbs somewhere, as it's dripping off the bottom of them.  I suspect that one or more carbs is leaking fuel somewhere, so it looks like they'll need a rebuild.   I've removed them tonight which was fairly straight forward.

Ah well, all fun... or something!

Thanks for all the replies!

I had forgotten that the timing chain lived between 2 and 3, that likely rules out it being a head gasket issue then.

Annoyingly I can't currently do a compression test, as my compression tester doesn't have an adaptor for 10mm spark plugs, but I've ordered one.

I've used an old spark plug to check each lead is firing, and they all are. I'll check again tonight to see if the sparks are better on 1 and 4 vs 2 and 3 - I wonder if a weak pulse on the inputs to the coil pack would result in a weak spark?

Other than that I am guessing it's going to be a fueling issue.  Seems odd that carbs 2 and 3 would develop a fault simultaneously though, but I can't think what else it might be.

Cheers all!

Hello All,

Further to my recent post.... I am having an issue where my bike doesn't seem to be running on cylinders 2 or 3 at idle.  They seem to sometimes join in at higher RPM, but this seems to be hit and miss.  Sometimes they run fine and idle without issue, but this seems to be increasingly rare.

I have changed the coil packs for new items, which unfortunately has made no difference (I've checked the resistance of the primary and secondary windings and everything checks out ok), I have also changed the spark plugs.  I have checked the resistance of the spark plug caps and they are all OK.  I have disconnected the HT leads one by one and used an old spark plug earthed to the engine block to confirm that there is a spark at all cylinders, although it's possible (really hard to judge) that 2 and 3 are perhaps slightly weaker - but I'm not convinced, and there is definitely a spark.

Pulling off the HT leads one at a time shows that when I pull 2 or 3 off it makes no difference, whereas if I pull 1 or 4 if it won't run at all.

Does anyone have any ideas? I am now at a bit of a loss as to what to try next.   I am a little worried that perhaps the head gasket has blown between cylinders 2 and 3 (has anyone heard of this before?) but that doesn't really tie up with the fact that at first this was an intermittent issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers!

Thanks all.

I've got some new plugs coming, so will try those. I will also try trimming the HT leads. If that fails I'll whack a new coil pack in it I guess!

Cheers!

FZS600 Fazer / Idle/Low RPM misfire
« on: 14 June 2017, 07:49:44 pm »
Hello all,

My FZS 600 has developed a misfire at idle and speeds below about 3500(ish) rpm. Above that it pulls well and runs as normal.  It's not always present, but usually is. It's usually present when starting from cold, and sometimes goes away after a run, but not always.  When it's misfiring it smells of unburnt fuel from the exhaust.  I whipped out the spark plugs this evening (new a couple of months ago) and 2 and 3 are quite black and sooty, whereas 1 and 4 look fine.

Is this likely to point to  a faulty coil pack, or is there another more likely candidate?  I will check the coil with a meter at the weekend.

Of course whilst poking around and investigating the fuel tap started leaking, so thats another job!  :rolleyes

Cheers for any help!

Cheers for the advice everyone!

Having checked through everything, and desperately wanting to not jinx it, but things seem to have improved...

Firstly, good advice on the center stand, it wasn't the issue, but I can see how it would be if that rubber stop fell off!

I re-adjusted my clutch, but it didn't seem to help much, but my chain was a bit too tight. Only slightly, but definitely a touch less than the minimum of 30mm it says in the book - so I adjusted that and slackened it off a touch.  I then went out for a ride and it seemed marginally improved, however I fear for the most part this issue might have been down to the idiot in the saddle.  It looks like the shifter has been lowered on the splines slightly at some point and I reckon my toe was holding it up slightly whilst riding, so after shifting I was inadvertently not letting it fully return. I went out for a ride last night after doing the chain and was consciously keeping my foot angled on the peg so as to not rest on the shifter and I didn't have any problems at all, it seemed to be shifting absolutely fine.   Slightly embarrassing but there you go!  :lol

As I said, I don't want to jinx it, but touch wood it seems to be OK now. Hopefully that is all that was wrong with it. I'll keep you posted though...

Cheers all!

Thanks for the advice! I will have a look at the chain adjustment and the linkage adjustment.

I've had a couple of years away from riding before I got this bike - but I should add that when it does change up first time it's fine. Sometimes I can go up through the box without any problems at all, and then other times it just won't shift - but it's always the higher gears that are the issues, no problem with the lower ones.

Cheers again!

Do you just mean the linkages from the shifter to the splined shaft on the gearbox? If so, yeah - they were pretty clean and free moving, but I gave them a few drops of oil anyway just in case, but no help.

Cheers for the reply!

Hello All,

As per my introduction thread, I've recently bought a '98 FZS-600. It's only got 4400 miles on the clock so clearly hasn't been used a huge amount in the previous 19 years.  For the most part it all seems to work fine, but it's a bit of a pig when changing up through the gears.

Down shifting is fine, no issues there and I have no problem selecting neutral either but sometimes (not always, and it's possibly slightly worse once warm) it can be a real pig to change up. 1st to 2nd is fine, and 2nd to 3rd is OK, but 4th, 5th and 6th (seems to get worse the higher the gear) can be difficult to get into. It will go, but sometimes needs 2 or 3 attempts before it will shift.  Other times it will slot straight in without problem.

I've changed the oil and filter a couple of weeks back in the hope that it might have had crap oil in it, but this doesn't seem to have helped (it was a longshot!).  I have also adjusted the freeplay in the clutch, but again it doesn't seem to have made much difference.

I was originally hoping this might be an issue caused by a lack of use, but I've put a 150 miles on it in the last couple of weeks and it doesn't seem to have improved anything.

Does anyone have any idea what might be the problem?

Thanks!

James

Hi All,

I'm James and live in south Warwickshire. After a couple of years of being bikeless I bought myself a 1998 FZS600 in January, having fancied one for a while.  A bike finally came up locally and I snapped it up.  It's not been used much - it's only got just over 4000 miles on the clock and I am hoping to add many many more.

I've found myself starting to google lots for various information and nearly always ended up at this forum, so I thought I better register!

Cheers!
