Black Forest

Anyone used any Hotels in the Black forest region of Germany?

Heading for somewhere in Europe on Thursday for 4/5 days depending on weather. Looks good there and we got rained off last year so may head back.

Ideally would like a hotel in a town with some life après ride :) and not a ghost town!

Head to Triberg Locksmith, stopped there twice, one of the bigger towns in the forest, central in black forest pretty active place, food stops, hotels, good german roads and most of all all the cuckoo clocks you can imagine, try to come back with one and not some embarressing disease

If you get bored in the Forest with the teddy bear's picnic's,
Head for Rothenburg on the romantic road area, fantastic old style town, and would be my personal preference to black forest got drenched with rain last time in the black woods .

I'm totally with mhowse here, except that I'd recommend that you stay at the Inselklause Hotel, just a couple of km's south of Triberg on the D500 (they only have 5 or 6 rooms). It's a fantastic family hotel with an excellent restaurant - I've been going there on and off for almost 30 years now. You can get a taxi into town and back out very easily - or you can walk it - between the hotel and the town there's a waterfall like nothing we've got here in the UK. It's about 3 miles down to town via the waterfall, but what a walk and what views.

Also, Freudenstadt is a really nice town, slap bang in the middle of the Black Forest, with a load of nice hotels - and very "German".

In Bad Petersal Griesbach, (not too far from either Freudenstadt or Trieberg) there's the Hotel Hirsch (with its own indoor pool) which is reasonably priced, with great food and in a pretty busy little town.

Just out of Bad Petersal is the Dottelbache Muhle - quiet little village, but a great hotel and also well into the Black Forest.

Hope one of these works out for you.

We'll be there again this summer and our first choice will be the Inselklause, followed by the Hirsch (if the Inselklause is booked up)

I stayed in Freudenstadt last time the World Cup was on, they had a big screen in the big square with a big crowd and loads of beer/food tents. Worth bearing in mind but I think most towns do something similar, the Germans like any excuse to get the beer tents out.

Ended up going to Mosel valley - Cochem. It was a bank holiday weekend and had severe trouble finding a suitable hotel!!

Had a blast, it's an area I've done before so kinda knew the roads were good.

Was in town one night Germany played and the whole town must have been out, all dressed up with their national colours and having a very grand time.
The night before we watched England and it was a very different atmosphere :lol

Linda Lusadi - hubba hubba

As a side note, mastercard and visa were just about impossible to use anywhere. German debit cards were all most places would take, we had enough euros in the end so it wasn't a major problem.
Is the whole of Germany like that or is it a local thing?

Never had a problem with credit cards anywhere in Europe, with the exception of some French petrol stations.

I'm surprised to hear that about Cochem. - been there probably a dozen times in the last 15 years and never had a problem with either VISA or MasterCard (except for small B & B's) - not the same with AMEX though.

Hopefully you visited the Ring while you were so close ? "Probably the best stretch of asphalt in the world"' as a certain brewery company might say.
