Cam chain tensioner spring preset? 02 Fazer 1000
« on: 09 January 2016, 07:30:15 pm »
Hi, is there any preset/preload needed to the spring before refitting the plunger into the cam chain tensioner? Thanks

Hi & Welcome.

A few of us on here have fitted a manual tensioner after one or two stories about the automatic one failing - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-fazer-fz-1-fzs-1000-2001-2005-manual-cam-chain-tensioner-adjuster-mcct-/252235198369

If you're refitting the automatic tensioner the Haynes manual says you need to use a screwdriver to turn the plunger all the way clockwise until the plunger is fully retracted and then hold it in that position whilst you refit, then release tension on the plunger whilst keeping the screwdriver in place to make sure it automatically turns anti-clockwise to take up the slack.

Hi, and thanks for the welcome,
My problem is that I've actually taken the tensioner apart to check the spring (which is OK,)
I need to reassemble it but I'm unsure whether the spring needs to be preloaded (turned)  before I put the plunger back in, which I gather needs to be turned with a screwdriver as you fit,

Sorry my mistake, I can't advise you on re-assembling the unit and the Haynes manual doesn't cover this, we have a few mechanics on the forums who will hopefully be able to advise. Personally I would still look at fitting a manual tensioner to eliminate any chance of failure of the automatic one, I think peace of mind in this regard is worth the £35. If you don't want to go the manual route and would rather not chance putting your old tensioner back in I still have my old OEM tensioner which I would be happy to let you have, it was fully functional when I removed it at around 30,000 miles. Send me a PM through the forums My Messages section if you're interested, I wouldn't want anything for it.

Greatfully received today,
fitted and running again!
thank you so much,  :rollin  :D

If anyone is interested I fitted the spring back into my original tensioner, after a bit of trial and error,(in comparison) "by touch"I would say the spring needs 5 full turns with a screwdriver before refitting the plunger / wormdrive,
But that being said I have fitted the one PieEater was kind enough to send me free of charge
Purely guesstimation but did feel the same tensionin if your ever in this predicament  :eek

Hi Joey, I too made the decision to take my tensioner apart and cannot get it back together....
Can you explain how you get 5 turns on the spring?
How far should the threaded worm be screwed in before assembly?
Advise to anyone else...don't take it apart!!
Maybe manual for me , dunno if I can trust it now

Hi. Right hopefully you'll be able to follow me. So here goes!
1, place the cylindrical spacer over the wormdrive (not sure what the exact name is)
2, seat the spring onto the wormdrive making sure it locates in the slot at the bottom.
3, now place this into the cct housing making sure the spring tab at the top locates into the thin slot on the side of the cct housing,
4, get a screwdriver
5, whilst holding the top of the wormdrive with your thumb turn the wormdrive with the screwdriver 5 full turns
6, keep the tensioner on the spring with the screwdriver!!  this is where you fit the plunger to the top of the wormdrive and carry on turning with the screwdriver until it winds itself all the way down,
7, refit springclip (circlip) this is a bit fiddley
8, as I said previously this is a guesstimation but it felt the same,  I had tried it with different amounts of turns and 5 felt the same as the other tensioner

Assembled!
Great description, thanks. Fiddly isn't it.....
I cannot see how one of these tensioner can let go to be honest, worth taking apart to check though!
Thanks anyway.
