General / rear braided hose poll
« on: 18 July 2013, 11:25:15 pm »
Most people seem to use the front brake 90+%more than the rear, so is there any point in getting braided rear hoses ?

General / Why do Three cylinder engines have unconventional cc's ?
« on: 16 July 2013, 07:19:52 pm »
All the triples seems to be 675cc rather than 600cc.  Why is there such a marked difference between a cylinder of 200cc and one of 225cc ?  I would have thought they could tune the engine, exhaust/weight to make any configuration work.  Obviously I'm wrong as Triumph and Yamaha have gone the 225cc route.

Does anyone know specifically what it is that makes the extra 25cc so important ?

cheers
Simon

General / hearing
« on: 12 July 2013, 09:26:07 am »
To protect my hearing I've been wearing ear plugs since I started riding.  I have found however that I'm unsure they're doing their job.  Yes they reduce the noise level but it still becomes reasonably loud white noise that I can hear for a long period after getting off the bike.

So I'm toying with the idea of headphones and low music.  Yes I know plenty of you don't wear ear plugs and plenty of you hate the idea of music, if so this isn't the topic for you.

My query is this: does anyone know if the varying pitch of music is more likely to reduce tinnitus than white noise ?

General / indicator buzzer
« on: 11 July 2013, 10:18:07 pm »
After leaving on my indicators one too many times (thanks DeadEye) I decided I needed a foolproof way of remembering to turn em off.  So I bought one of these:

Foc it's loud.  Practically louder than the flipping alarm.  Time will tell if it stays, gets sellotaped over, ripped out or whatever solution shows itself.

General / babies vs toddlers vs juniors.
« on: 07 July 2013, 11:51:40 pm »
In a radical departure from erectile dysfunction I have a 3 month old son (as some of you know). ;)

My instructions are that he get 7 fluid oz of milk at 10:30 pm.  Somehow this turns in to an hour and a half of bouncing, patting and puking.  Just 5 minutes ago, for no reason, Jack gives me a priceless look; a huge toothless grin with milk all around his chops.  Having said all this he doesn't walk, talk or most importantly of all play with lego (yet).

toddlers are the same but they walk a bit more and puke
a bit less bit and make stinkier nappies.

Joe is a junior, he's trying to swim, comes up with awesome questions, walks and runs reasonably well and most importantly  loves lego.

Why can't we just skip all the rubbish stuff and get straight to the junior years ? I'm told that the toothless grin is precious and I'll admit he's growing on me but the sooner he stops puking the happier I'll be.

I suppose it was more of a statement than a question  :lol

General / Breakdown cover (best vs cheapest)
« on: 03 July 2013, 08:57:05 pm »
I don't have breakdown cover.  I'm not exactly a liability  :rolleyes  but I've had 2 low speed incidents (read fall off's) in the 7 months I've been riding (read in to that what you will).  I'm now considering going for a ride with the lofo's and wondering if I want to be possibly be stranded 100 miles away from home (I don't) and the bike is 13 odd years old too and I'm scared of punctures (and may have made some enemies recently  :lol ) etc.

So I've been thinking about breakdown insurance.  The best option seems to be the AA and the RAC because they provide car and motorbike cover for no more money.  It seems a no brainer as a cager to make use of that.  However....  Apparently they know nowt about motorbikes (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?t=199747&page=1) .

My questions are:
  • Is this a false economy ?
  • are there better deals out there from a known big brand (voucher codes/referrals/cashback etc)
  • Is going for the RAC/AA an idea as any sort of cover is better than none
I've looked at money saving expert and hotukdeals but I thought I'd ask you lot too.

TIA (sorry for posting so much but this seemed like a good question)

General / How did you find out about Foc-u.co.uk ?
« on: 03 July 2013, 11:48:06 am »
Just curious how people found out about the site....  Oh and also to incite a few more flames, increment the post counts and put some more load on the server  :lol

I think a forum rules sticky would be a nice suggestion.

I don't find sexism, racism, profanity or trolling funny (others too, but the list of my intolerance could get long).  It makes it worse when it's written off as sarcasm or a joke and everyone says 'ha ha'.  It's not funny it's offensive to me and (hopefully) others.

If you want the forum to have a broader audience then perhaps less swearing too.  Sure you can have it in an adult only banter area if you want, but I'd like to think most people can have fun without being crude and base.

Yeah I'm going to be mocked, but tbh I really don't really care.  Most mature and popular Forums have forum rules and that's my justification for this post.

examples:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?a=81
http://ubuntuforums.org/misc.php?do=showrules
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/help/4715856.stm
I could do a VERY long list

Let the flaming begin.

General / Dent puller
« on: 31 May 2013, 12:15:37 pm »
As I have widely advertised in my shy way I have a substantial handlebar shaped ding in my fuel tank.  It has definite creases and I don't think a suction puller would cut the mustard.

To compound the issue the cost of the tank vs a body shop makes it financially hard to justify the cost.

So two questions:

- is the fazer tank twin skinned?
- should I just leave it dented or should I have a go with one of these?  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SPRING-SALE-POWER-TEC-92376-PAINTLESS-DENT-REMOVAL-SLIDE-HAMMER-9-GLUE-PADS-/181145195228

I know worst case scenario is a wrecked tank and I should empty it of fuel first but any other advice ?

If the forum goes down (as it did the other day) it might be handy to have a 'support' alias/email/web address that can be found using google search so that foc'cers can let you (or the hosters) know if it's all gone a bit pearshaped so you can let your hosting provider know.

Obviously a @foc-u.co.uk may not work in the event of a DNS error like yesterday so ...?
If you don't want to know, that's fine.  Just a suggestion  :lol

Yes I know you may not be interested on a Friday night whilst supping on a tasty beverage but you don't have to look at the email or you could filter it, bounce it, forward it or whatever.

FZS600 Fazer / Most popular colour for a Fazer 600
« on: 17 May 2013, 06:24:40 pm »
This is questioned a lot so here is a poll for the FZS 600.

A decisive answer is needed to answer the burning question.  No 'other' option to prevent skewed results ;-)

My first poll so lets see... (I think it's not going to be gold  :lol )

This should probably go in the fazer 600 board but I'm not typing it all in again so maybe an admin can move it.

hint (not my bike, mine has a stylish dent in the fuel tank as well as other signs of a learner):

FZS600 Fazer / Another first for me
« on: 16 May 2013, 09:37:58 pm »
I went out in the dry and sun, came back in the dark and wet.  First time I've ever ridden in the wet and I'm wearing leathers...nice.  So I spent the 20 minute ride home on the wet roads with rain coming down, petrified and taking each slow corner at about 5mph.  When I first started on the wet roads the rear end felt all floaty (technical term alert),  I thought the rear tyre was running flat (it felt kinda squishy).  Then accelerating it felt like I was wheel spinning.

Time for a glass of wine to settle the nerves.  God only knows how couriers, commuters and racers cope with it.

I'm glad I did it, I feel like I might possibly be able to do it again in the future if I absolutely had to.

General / chain cleaning
« on: 16 May 2013, 11:53:15 am »
I know nothing about bikes except that the copper on my bikesafe course said my chain was minging.  A small amount of research later and a slightly squashed finger and it's done.  I used paraffin, a rag and toothbrush and used some scottoil afterwards to relube.

Two pictures, before and after. Was there any point ? Any tips ?  How do you clean the side of the chain you can't see ?

Cheers

General / scratches on visor and Matt lid
« on: 14 May 2013, 06:31:26 pm »
There was an old topic on this (http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php?action=post;topic=597.0;last_msg=3428) but I wondered if there was any new wisdom ?

I'm thinking plastic polish for the visor but I don't actually notice it that much as it's in my peripheral vision.

I'm just cheesed off cos it's only a few months old.
