Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Front brake lever jurk.
« on: 20 November 2020, 01:21:11 pm »
If it was my bike I would do a complete overhaul of the front brake system. Braided hoses either 2 or 3 line set up-Hel or equivalent brand as already said. The master cylinder overhaul kit is cheaper from Powerhouse Automotive as are the brake calliper piston and dust seal kits than the Yamaha ones. I would strip the callipersand check condition of Pistons etc. Rebuild using red rubber grease between Pistons & seals. New pads if required and fresh DOT 4 fluid. When you consider what your thou is capable of it's nice to know you can stop  if you have to without "drama"!
I take it your discs have enough thickness left and run true?

I can't help with your first question-guess you'd need to talk to someone who knows more about these things.
What I can tell you is we bought a Freed Conn model T-com VB last October and it was on offer from Amazon for approx £60. Easy to install good sound quality and perfect for pillion communication or bike to bike when my good lady is on her own machine.

« on: 12 August 2019, 12:07:30 pm »
I think the saying "Caveat Emptor"(Let the buyer beware) especially applies with insurance companies. If you read all the small print in their policies it becomes clear that they will wriggle out of their obligations if you fail to tell them of the slightest change to your original declaration,on which they base their quotation for cover. I was with Carole Nash(Cash?) for far too long until I realised that the motorist/rider is viewed as a Cash(Nash?) Cow to be milked to the utmost.
Moral of this tale. Renew Early as mentioned, Do not remain loyal to one company-they will penalise you for doing so-shop around for the best deal(not always the same as lowest price).
Finally do not let them auto renew or,if this happens, make a note to cancel in good time before end of cover period.
I have a friend who either through laziness or fear of modern technology always pays more than necessary and guess who all his bikes are covered with!

there is a mini roundabout near me and it consists of a painted white circle with no centre bollard to allow buses to negotiate the junction turning left or right.
Over the 25 years I have lived here there have been many RTCs on this junction(was going to say accidents but most of them have been caused by outright stupidity or careless/dangerous driving).
Lately I approach said junction with EXTREME CAUTION as more and more drivers simply dont even slow let alone look right or left  but sail across without showing any sign that they recognise they are crossing a junction.
I used to think it was too many distractions in cars like satnavs, infotainment centres and "danglies" from the rear view mirror. Now I believe that many drivers simply dont give a s**t ! After all who is going to pick them up on their errors?-we only see police vehicles on rapid response work-often unmarked- travelling at high speed. Tailgating and lane hogging are 2 other classic instances of moronic behaviour I witness daily.
Dont know what the answer is-its probably me getting old and cynical but there seems to be so much selfish behaviour generally these days-I think it has something to do with the narcissistic cult of celebrity s**t that pours forth from our tv sets unless we remember the on/off switch!

Is there a single MP (our so-called elected REPRESENTATIVES) who is capable or willing to put our country ahead of their self serving, short term, private interests?
I am totally disgusted at the shambles of all this f*****g nonsense.
Maybe its time to change the whole bloody system and get some professional managers running the country instead of these greedy, out of touch, selfish braying donkeys. Makes me sick to be British!

« on: 01 March 2019, 09:44:38 am »
I replaced my last Shoei flip up helmet 2 years ago at 6 years of hard use. It looked OK  but had become almost impossible to rid it of accumulated sweat residue-I tried many different ways of cleaning the linings but it still had a lingering pong( And before you state the obvious I do use personal cleaning products :lol ). The current lid is another Shoei Neotec with drop down tinted sun shield bought at a discounted price as the Neotec 2 had just been launched. Love the convenience of these flip up helmets even though they are a tad heavier than some other brands/models. Excellent demisting with Pinlock insert important for me as a wearer of glasses.
When I campaign "Henry Honda" the mighty Cub I wear an Aldi open face with integral drop down visor only cost £30 but is German TuV approved.

tommy,
You could search out the footbar assembly for the ELECTRIC START version of the Cub.
I found one on ebay that provided sufficient clearance for the extra width of Lifan engine and accomodate the rear brake pedal and exhaust pipe/silencer.
Alternatively,as you say, cut and insert/weld extra section in to existing bar. Chain line I found perfect.
V5C-Simply a change of engine advice to DVLA (Notify insurance co of increased capacity-power increase is slight but tractability of 4 spd motor much improves riding experience). Its looking good!!!

Hi Tommy,
Sorry for not replying sooner-have been away for a while(no, not a mental health facility!)
I bought the C90-G from a dealer 2 years ago-low mileage and VGC. Took it to IOM summer 2017 and didnt like the 3 speed semi-auto gearbox (particularly when trying to get round the Ramsey Hairpin! :eek ) Autumn time I decided to strip bike and treat any frame corrosion etc. Bought a Lifan 110cc 4 speed manual clutch engine complete with carb and ancillaries from Pit Bike Spares for £173. The bike runs well with the original Honda Keihin carb and although not much quicker has better torque and almost identical fuel economy. Went back for 2018 Manx GP in late August 2018 and the bike was faultless.
I belong to the C90 forum: C90 Club.co.uk -a very helpful & friendly bunch-glad you are keeping the cub!

Tommy, I am approaching my 71st and, since I ended up in hospital last January,I managed to get out & enjoy the Tracer and the Honda C90(actual 110cc)last summer/autumn.
When the time comes, which it will, I shall be sad to see the Tracer go but will keep the C90 as it is hardly heavier than an old fashioned bicycle.
I have a friend who until a few years ago rode some big powerful machines but failing health and stamina have taken their toll but he still enjoys riding his monkey bikes and old British autocycles. Think hard before getting rid of the cub it isnt much to tax & MOT. Good luck whatever you decide!

Hey Dave,
What did you do to your C90 to up the cc to 110? did you fit one of the Korean barrel and piston kits? How did it go and what was the quality like.
(Heard tales some of them are crap quality)
My next job to get the Chicken Chaser re-bored.

I have a biker that has shown some interested in the FZS600 and is coming to look at it in a couple of days. Mrs thinks I am mad for trying to sell it, but there comes a time for all things, I will be sad to see it go, just hope that whoever buys it looks after it, like I do/did.

Be interested in knowing about your C 90 upgrade to 110 cc, and what difference to performance did it make.

My C 90 is the Economy Cub, I believe it is lower geared than some cubs as it is set up for city riding, quicker of the mark from lights and junctions but lower top speed, so I might up the gearing by two more notches on the front sprocket.

I rode past the shop yesterday morning and noticed it was empty.Cant imagine they were selling many bikes last couple of years-perhaps the "adventure" bike market has levelled off after the last 10 years? Must admit I am much happier on a lightweight Tracer thats a bit easier to move around than some of the "behemoths" I see being ridden.

General / Re: speeding ticket (NIP)
« on: 12 August 2018, 08:11:11 am »
If you think 30mph is slow spare a thought for my area of South Birmingham where they have introduced a blanket 20mph zone.
If you drive/ride at 20mph you get tailgated/flashed by following cars. Even the police dont observe it travelling downhill on a certain road.
So at what point do previously law-abiding road users lose all respect for the law and join the ranks of the rest?
I think it would be in everyones interest if the police were able/willing to police our roads properly and focus on the really serious offenders who seem to get away with all sorts.

I got caught out 2 weeks ago on the M5 northbound approaching M42 where I failed to slow to 40mph quickly enough as had usual Audi/BMW/Merc following close behind.Have opted for a "motorway speed awareness course" next month to save getting the 3 points.  Was clocked at 47mph which, while I accept I was technically breaking the law, consider if I had braked might have resulted in being shunted in the rear. This section of the M5 is a joke as there has been a long term lane closure in place in lane 4 (which is lane 2  for M5 north). I can only assume this is to discourage motorists continuing up M5 through long term roadworks between J2 and J1 and to encourage them to use M42 instead. The result is a funnelling of traffic, last minute lane switching and delays for all concerned. Accidents continue to happen on the new "improved" 4 lane section of M5 from Worcester to M42 turn off and believe me speed isnt the main culprit-its lane hogging, switching, undertaking and following too close. Looking forward to being shown how to use motorway properly as I have only driven 3/4 million miles on these in the last 53 years!! :lol

I also had this one. Its almost like a trick question. How many bikes are actually 50cc -Any? I thought they were 49cc - ergo my answer 125cc

50cc is the *minimum*, so mopeds being 49cc aren't legal.

You can use a C90 on the motorway, but you're taking your life in your hands if you do!!

I once rode briefly on a section of M6 north of Birmingham on a 1960s 125cc scooter-talk about taking your life in your hands! :eek The trucks were constantly overtaking and causing amazing turbulence effects-never again! My Honda Cub (110cc Lifan 4 speed manual) is very happy on Englands byways and A roads where theres a 50/60mph limit

What is Jodie Kidd known for? I am so out of touch these days as I dont do "cult of personality", facebook or other social media. Dont watch much TV especially all the so-called "celebrity" shit. As others have said it must be their distorted view of what constitutes "eye-candy"! Who was that lovely lass who used to present MotoGP in the early noughties. Memory playing up! :lol

Scored 49/50. The one I got wrong was about tyre on motorcycle over 50cc. I clicked tread depth below 1.6mm (which is the legal minimum for this category as far as i recall-can anyone confirm this please?) I should have gone for bulge in tyre which  thinking about it, I would be more concerned about a bulge than having insufficient tread although I guess we all regularly check our tyres(bike & 4 wheel vehicles) unlike a few cagers I know who NEVER check tyre pressures let alone look for cuts/bulges/tread depth :eek

Really sorry to hear this BUT could have been much worse. Get properspecialist advice & dont necessarily rely on your insurance company to act in your best interest.
Having been "sideswiped" by a half-asleep private hire driver early one morning this class of road USER (wont say driver!!) is top of my list for dangerous, unpredicable, inexplicable road behaviour. You have to always assume worst case scenario at intersections, junctions etc. Hope the B**L ache goes soon!

The Isle of Man TT has been and gone. Only another year to wait...

Excellent racing all week, lap records broken in virtually all races, new faces on the top step and pretty good coverage from ITV4.

A few of the telly presenters were changed and the new ones didn't really work and they also changed the music from "King of the Mountain" to some namby pamby tune. As I record the programs I can just pass by all the yap and get straight into the racing which saves 15 minutes repetition from the previous days coverage and any inane chit chat from the monotone presenters.

Agree absolutely.
i cant afford/dont want the crowds of TT fortnight so I record the ITV4 progs. In fact I do this with most progs these days so I dont have to put up with the ads every 10-15mins. Some of these ad breaks last 4-5 mins! :eek . At the same time I tune in to the Manx Radio station on the ipad to listen to live race commentary. The senior race had me on the edge of the seat and both Dean Harrison and Peter Hillier were capable & worthy of 1st place-just 2 seconds separating them after 6 laps. I am too old to get my head around these 134-135mph laps-absolutely no margin for error.
I do however go to the Manx GP in August with a friend-we put a couple of Honda cubs in the back of the van for having some fun on.

Maybe one day I will actually go to watch the racing but unless I come into a lot of money I can't see it happening so I will stick to watching it on the telly.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Easyist way to get carbs off???
« on: 05 May 2018, 08:58:20 am »
When refitting carbs to inlet hoses I used a thin piece of wood to fit between back of carbs and airbox. You can then apply uniform pressure to all 4 carbs while tightening hose clamps. A little red rubber grease on the inside of the rubber hoses may help.

Last autumn I dismantled the Honda C90 Cub to treat the corrosion under the main frame tube and on the rear section under the plastic tail section. All went well  and took the metal frame parts for blasting, welding, and powdercoating. All the parts stored away in Aldi flat trays.
Christmas passed ok but developed a chest infection and then on New Years Eve caught "Australian" variant of flu virus. Couldnt breathe by evening, ambulance job to QE Hospital on oxygen and then put into induced coma for a few days. Came round in critical care with tubes & wires everywhere to discover that it had been touch & go for a while. Long story short spent most of January in hospital but got home 30th having lost 5 kilos and had to "learn" to walk properly as muscles were so weak. My sisters who love me dearly were muttering about selling bikes and giving up riding. Just to say I have convalesced by completing the rebuild of "Henry"-the C90 and on Wednesday this week rode the Tracer 75 miles in our balmy Spring sunshine. Indeed, one of the consultants said he thought the motivation to ride again played a large part in my speedy recovery-so its official-motorcycling is good for your wellbeing-but we knew that anyway! :lol
