Title: Petrol tank prop
Post by: b1k3rdude on 26 December 2020, 10:30:57 pm
So i was in a shop a while back and I saw the mechanic has a tank prop made out of what looked like a pneumatic car hood prop (see below) and I wonder if there was a shorted one for motorcycles..? Or Will have I have to make one out of a small gas strut & some rubber feet..?

Or you could just use a piece of wood like everyone else. :pokefun

i have two I use. One is an 18" block of wood, the other is an old spirit level thats about the same length. Both fit behind the front of the tank and into the gap in the frame meaning they dont slip when knocked.

Yep - wood. in fact I have various shapes and lengths that sit along with my normal tools for different bike jobs.

 :agree

I used a felt tip pen and wrote 'Genuine Yamaha part' on my bit of wood. Saved myself a fortune  :)

For years I've been meaning to cut a specifically shaped bit of wood to hook onto the bars and front of the tank. Perhaps with some protruding bolts to hook the tank bracket onto etc. Never got round to it. Still I just use some random bit of wood I have to hand and put up with occasionally knocking it and having the tank crashing down onto me...

Some Suzuki’s come with them. SV650 if I recall correctly.

Length of jack chain for me, hung from the roof truss, spring clip each end, so totally clear access

This is a basic-tech level I could fall back on, I take the take will open open so far?

That looks more like a telescoping hiking pole than a gas strut, which makes me think you might be able to use one of those telescoping curtain poles if you can find one the right length and type?

Yeah that what I was thinking, small and thin enough to sit in the toolbox.

check out fishing tackle stuff. They have a lot of telescopic pole things, short ones too for little rod rests and keep nets.

A scrap length of 15mm copper tube with a walking stick rubber glued on one end would do the trick. Mines a bit more "factory" than that, but not by much :lol .
