Been to the Wirral Egg Run today which is a fair old jaunt for us in the midlands.....
but when i got back i noticed an oily patch on the floor?
i also then noticed it was all over the left side of the bike and my left boot?
Any ideas where is from or what it could be?
p.s. ive also noticed since that there is a oily patch in the shed after a closer inspection so i expect its been going for a while :'(

[/size]If there is no gasket on the sprocket cover oil leaks through it,run your finger along the bottom of the sprocket cover see if there is oil there.Oil the chain first then go for a quick run and check when you get back.

chain is fine, the oil is coming from the alternator area....
theres a breather pipe that runs underneath it i think but nothing is from the front sprocket......
are the alternators incased in liquid? someone mentioned to me that some bikes have a wet mag n some are dry?

There is the engine oil breather over there, I think it is open when the pressure is too high, it goes to the airbox, and then there is another hose that goes from the airbox to outside in case there is too much oil. I do not know what else can cause overpressure except too much oil. Take a look to the service manual, at the downloads section.

The generator on the FZS600 isn't immersed in oil, or at least, it shouldn't be.
Are you sure that's the origin of the leak and it hasn't tracked from somewhere else? I'd be more suspicious of the seal on the clutch push-rod or the one for the gearbox output shaft.

ok cool, someone asked me to ask anyways just in case it was.... i may try replacing the seals in things see if that helps....
does anyone actually have this problem or had it before?

What do you use to lubricate the chain?
I have a chain oiler, some gets sprayed off at the front and so a few drops usually drain out from the sprocket cover while it's parked.

Have you checked the oil level? If it's not dropped it's not leaking.

Fazerider: i just use Lube every week or so depending on how much i ride it.... there is too much for it to be just from the chain plus its too far forward.....
mcyoungy: i have just checked the oil leve and cannot see anything but a black screen.... gave it a shake and saw the little golden bubble appear from the top which has now got me thinking if i have overfilled with oil???
I am down to 2 options.........either its over filled and leaking out to get rid or....
the rubber seal into the Alternator has gone.... the guy in the shop thinks it might be that which would explain my electrical problems of late???
its either £6 for the original part but i have to strip the engine to get it out.... or £23 for the alternative part but if i still have an original i will still have to strip engine to get it out??
I feel like just getting rid as its one problem after another with it :(
also... just busted my finger trying to tighten up the bolts :'(

if you think its comming from the alternator just take the cover off and have a look. take the allen head bolts out and give the cover a good pull.

If the oil is definitely coming from the alternator cover then it is one of three possibilities.
1. The crank seal behind the rotor.
2. The bung on the oilway below the crank seal.
3. The mating surface of the crankcase.
If it is 1. The engine does not need to be stripped to replace the seal as there is an alternate seal available. Part number 93101-29166. Easily replaceable with the rotor off. It does require a special sealant when replacing it. Should take a good mechanic less than 2 hours.(Biggest issue will most likely be removing the rotor) Remove the cover and tie it up, remove the Rotor and be careful not to lose the woodruff key. Lever out the seal, it has lip but surprisingly easy to remove, careful not to mark the crank or the crankcase. Clean up the area with some fluid that evaporates quickly but does not leave residue. Smear a little sealant on the seal and housing. Push the new seal in squarely. Use a deep socket or something which is deeper than the crank end and as close in size to the outer edge of the seal as possible. Replace woodruff key then the rotor. Replace the cover the rotor replace and leave it over night for the sealant to cure.
If it is 2. clean all the paint of the area, score the area lightly and apply some JB weld to the area. leave it for 24 hours to set .The area will need to be spotlessly clean to ensure a good bond.
If it is 3 do the same as 2.
2 and 3 can happen from a trip down the road on its side at speed. :-)

well i took my bike around to my friends house after i lost my fight with tears and gained a lovely black middle finger (cant wait to show it my bosses) :lol
he found that i have WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much oil in and ended up draining nearly a litre out.... his thinking is that possibly i had too much in causing too much pressure and forcing the hot runny golden stuff out.....
im keeping my eye on it for now....
i'll let you all know... got a feeling i will have to replace that crank seal thou.... will hgave to be a job for after next week when i get paid.... :\

1Litre? :eek Too much oil can cause just as much damange as too little, use a measuring jug if you are unsure on your next service :b

My bets saying that the much oil has built up alot of pressure forcing alot of oil vapour down the crank breather.
Especially on the long run we had, which will have really got your bike up to temperature.
Give it all a REAL good clean over, clean up all the remainder of the oil of your engine casing and whevever else it got to, make sure the oil levels right and keep an eye out for anymore oil.

Well all, I had no issues with this until recent...
now I can not do any journey without an oil patch forming....
I have the rubber seal to replace but just haven't got the time to repair it..... have to keep topping the oil up too....
now had to replace the battery and need the front fairing replacing :'(
I think the biking gods have fallen out with me
