Decided that being stuck in my wife's car with the tribe was a bit tiresome so suggested I ride to North Norfolk whilst she drove.

Best idea I've had in flipping ages.

Back to 53mpg. Think I was enjoying letting it rip a little too much when first fitted.

Just refuelled - 46.7mpg which is down from the usual 50mpg.....hmmm......only covered 122 miles and used 12 litres of fuel. At least the price of petrol has gone down to 199.9ppl in my area.

FZ1 - I had hoped that the plugs were the same but they weren't. I searched more info about these booster plugs and the electronics is pretty straightforward....apparently!

To anyone thinking of going down the BoosterPlug route....read on.

I watched AndyManCam's YouTube video where he installed one on his FZ1 and thought I'd try and find one for the FZ6. Well, it turns out that they are £129 a go brand new.....but the internal gubbins on all models appears to be the same. Just the plugs at the ends are different for each motorcycle model.

So, my solution isn't quite plug'n'play but very close.

I picked up a BoosterPlug off Marketplace for £60 and then grabbed some no-strip wire connectors off Amazon for £8 https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07DK7HBKR

It is as simple as it sounds - cut the female plug off the BoosterPlug (with a good 8cm of wire attached) and attach a connector at each cut end. Cut the female plug off the AIT sensor and swap 'em over whilst keeping the wire colours in the right orientation.

Works a treat! Much smoother acceleration and less jerkiness when opening up the throttle from idle in 2nd gear.

Still got half a tank of fuel so I'll fill up at some point and log the mileage for that full tank on Fuelly and see if mpg changes. By all accounts it doesn't change at all, but I'll find out for myself.

Went to pop 150ml of ZX1 Extralube in the FZ6 and had to drain said 150ml of oil from the sump plug to make space. Managed to drain more than that by dropping the sump plug into the jar that I had prepared as a receptacle, then had to fish it out again, all the time whilst oil was spewing over the garage floor.

A mega clear up unsued followed by a liberal sprinkling of cement and then the ZX1 and some fresh oil was popped in.

Went for a ride and came across yet another motorist who doesn't follow the road signs at roundabouts (left lane is left turn only so she was part way round the roundabout whilst indicating left then swung over into my lane to go straight on) and clocked up a few miles in the sunshine.

Having just been through the process for the motorcycle test, 35 years after passing my car driving test, I can pass on some nuggets from the theory and practical test centres in Suffolk....

1. massive increase in ringers attending theory tests. I was told of one the day before where a woman did the theory test in Newcastle in one name in the morning, drove down to Norwich and then took it in another name in the afternoon. Hence why all bracelts/watches/wrist ornaments were removed, sleeves rolled up, shoes removed and socks lowered, hood checked, ears inspected and hair rummaged through looking for comms equipment. I was told that ladies were also instructed to raise skirt hems to mid thigh to see if anything was written on the upper leg as a crib sheet.

2. Londoners buying driving tests in Suffolk thinking they can get away with friends or relatives to take their driving tests. My motorcycle instructor told me of an incident the week before where two police cars raced and boxed in a lad about to take his test and dragged him out of the car. The examiner had no idea what was going on until it was explained to him that the person taking the test was not the person on the application.

The other issue, particularly in Bury St Edmunds, is that they have strange priority systems and in places you get no warning that you're in a left turn only lane until you are right upon a roundabout, so if you don't know the local area then you're going to get surprises. Hence why Bury St Edmunds has one of the lowest pass rates in the country.

Back to car/camper - definitely sounds like fun to be able to escape for a weekend. I know West Wittering quite well from the couple of years I spent around Worthing and Findon. It is beautiful.

I also had a friend in Sevenoaks who used a Grand Cherokee as his station car (the one he didn't mind being scratched in the station car park) and he kept his windsurfing kit in there as well. he kept an eye on the wind speeds from his office PC and would create an important meeting if the winds turned in a friendly direction.

It all worked well until the day the car burst into flames in the car park as he was on the train into his office in London.....

As someone with two RX8s I can certainly attest to the ridiculous expense of running two or more vehicles. I now SORN one car as I drive the other and then alternate throughout the year. I used to pay around £1000 in road tax/VED but now it's down to about £500. Both need MoT so my £50 becomes £100 and I have already splashed out on all of the obvious things that might need attention so the annual repair maintenance costs are down to about £50 for each car for oil and filter. I do about 3000 miles in each car - maybe a bit more in my good weather one compared to the bad weather one.

When I retire I am seriously considering selling both cars, moving to a town centre house or flat and then hiring a car each time I need to go any sort of distance. Everything else will be within walking distance or can be delivered. I might trade in my wife for a newer model but last time I did that it cost quite a bit!

So, in your position, I'd work out the annual costs of car ownership including depreciation/write off and compare it to the cost of car rental for those weekends when you'll be hanging ten.

Not alot dearer than over here robbo !!!!

The light had just come on on mine so i filled her up and it costs £30.32
2 years ago i could fill t up for £16 ffs

On that theme, I stuck half a tank of petrol in one of my RX8s yesterday. 30.17 litres cost £60 and I'll cover around 110 miles with that. Ouch! Thank goodness for the FZ6 with its consistent 50mpg.

I've been looking at fork springs for it but also considering swapping the forks out for something inherently stiffer. Just want a straight swap.

Morning all! Nightshift a tad light so posting this up for help please!
2008 FZ1-s, love it, never fails to induce that Cheshire cat smile!  :D
Only came with 1 red and 1 black key, no probs me thinks, get a spare black one on-line, and use the DIY programming procedure.
Well, procedure works, but will only allow 1 black key, either one, to be recognised, the other will spin it but not fire it up!
Same with either black key.
Popped into local dealer, CMC Cannock, and the service lad said "you still got the missing black key programmed in the ECU, max of 2 keys, that's why a second cant be programmed"!
Logical when you know how!  :\
BUT.....can I find how to delete keys from the ECU? Told me it can be done DIY, didn't say how tho'!  :'(
So, can anyone out there advise how to delete all keys from the ECU so I can start again and have 2 working black one's?
TIA - Dick Snow.

Not sure the dealer is totally right.

I had precisely the same issue - came with 1 red and 1 black and I had another black made and followed the procedure and had exactly the same as you. As soon as I mad eone black one live, the other one died.....until I stumbled over this link: https://netrider.net.au/threads/yamaha-mt-07-programming-multiple-black-keys.272905/

And now I have 1 red and 2 black and all three work.

Cleaned it from front to back with a combination of standard car wash shampoo, then a dilute G101 mixture and then finished with an American plastics enhancer and now the blacks are black and the rest of the panels and screen are shiny.

Swapped the aftermarket longer screen for an OEM standard one. Slightly more wind buffetting but nothing serious.

Oh, and fitted a Denali Soundbomb Mini and can now scare the local population from around 5 miles away.

Still need to get springs and oil/dust seals for the front forks but that can wait.

Tried getting the FZ6 on an Oxford Big Black paddock stand but definitely needed Mrs Smutty to help. Not at all confident about getting it up there without her help......oo-er missus.

It came with adjustable levers but even on setting 1 the clutch lever is a tad too far away so I've slackened the cable a bit. Spec says 10-15mm and I am well and truly at the 15mm end of things.

Glad it went ok :thumbup . There's a big smile in your household today, that's for sure. Well done,  :thumbup :thumbup  but take it easy.

Done about 500 miles in the last week, so clocking time on asphalt. Just for fun I've been logging trips to the petrol station on Fuelly and am getting over 50mpg, so I am definitely not being a loon. To be honest, I think I've not taken it to 10k rpm yet as there simply hasn't been a need to do that.

And kudos to all of the car drivers who have kindly drifted to their left so I can slip past.

There are plenty of decent folk out there.

Just got back from my 250 mile round trip and swapped the clutch lever assembly arm and wish I'd done it before I left.

Grahamm is totally right - it's noticeably lighter and the biting point of the clutch is much longer. It's so, so much easier.

I didn't bother mucking about with the cable guide and by inspection there's no issue with catching or fouling.

My drive is on a slope and I let the bike roll backwards in neutral, then did the same with the clutch pulled in she the gearbox in first gear. Didn't notice any difference so I assume I've got the adjustment right...?

Photo is from before I tightened the cable at the clutch handlebar lever end.

What is the benefit of doing this mod?

I'm told that it makes the clutch lighter. I've not fitted it yet. Just done 120 miles with the stock arm and the clutch is almost like an on/off switch. Not much subtlety. So I'm going to fit this late on Sunday or early next week and report back.

Chill, relax and breathe, you'll be fine. Just jump through the hoops you need to jump through. You won't truly start learning until you're free to make and learn from your own mistakes. You'll be fine :thumbup

Best advice on the planet - send me your bill!!!!

Just passed with zero minors. Clearly Tuesday was a bad day at the office. Now on the phone to the insurance company to transfer over to the FZ6. Expect to see a CBF125 on Marketplace any.....minute....now.

Sorted the dual light mod - and now I am no longer blind in one eye.

Had a 4 hour lesson yesterday evening and came home pretty dispirited. Had an absolute shocker and would've failed the test at least eight times over. I can't get my head around the need to look left and look right when speeding up or slowing down. It seem unnatural and unecessary but I know the examiner is looking for it. I totally missed a 20mph zone. Why look to your right when going ahead at a roundabout? I am more concerned about someone coming from my left and not stopping. It makes no sense to look right where cars beside and behind you on a roundabout can already see you and know you're there. Never saw a sodding great road sign. It is ridiculous. I'd never do those things in a car.

Still going ahead with the test tomorrow and hoping I can nail it on the day. But think I'll be driving to the in-laws on Friday and not riding.

So BU3-E6340-00 has arrived and it looks remarkably like 1WS-16340-00 but £11 cheaper.

First pic is a screenshot of BeginnerBiker's image and the next three are BU3. The rise is different to the original FZ6 arm and I've got a spare cable guide which I might remodel (hit with a hammer after angle grinding a slot!) to change the angle of the cable if needed.

Fixed the non-working dual headlight mod that was already on the FZ6. Ordered new lamps, swapped the HE out but no joy. So chased the wire to a spade connector and unwrapped it of its electrical tape and cleaned connectors. Chased the wire further and hoped it was the pin mod and not the splice mod but it's the splice mod. Unwrapped that and was pleased to see it had been soldered. Checked that and all was well so fired up the engine and the dual lights work fine. Taped everything back up and checked once again and the lights still work together.

My new-to-me FZ6 had one black key and the red key. Bought a cheap key off eBay (£8) and had it cut (£12.50) then used the well-googled method to program the key. Then found out that the original key wasn't recognised. So only one key working at a time.....

More references to Uncle Google and now have two working black keys and the red key safely packed away again.

Oh, and I sanded down and black barbecue painted the side plates of the radiator. They now look much better.

And fitted a phone holder.

And made a USB charging cable.

Oh totally. There are some great integrated solutions out there so you don't have to attach a multitude of connectors and eye terminals to your battery. But CTEK don't make a USB connector so I just wanted to show how I cobbled one together in case anyone else wondered if it's possible.

No problem. I am not too sure how to post a pic with a comment so I'll try and explain and add the pics in the right order at the end.

It is easier to show the Comfort Cable on a Mazda as I don't have to lift up the fuel tank. That's the first three pics in this post. I'll add the others in the next. This connector has a traffic light system to show charge levels.

On the bike the connector happily fits under the tank and pokes out of the front. Then there is a pic of my home made USB connector and then it attached to the battery and loosely laid on the phone mount. I think I'll use a sticky bud to hold it to the rear of the mount.
