Title: 98 boxeye harsh clutch

Hello,


98 boxeye with 44.000miles on the clock.


I think something is not ok with the clutch. When I change gear I have to feather the clutch a lot to have a more "smooth" feeling on the gear train.


It's a very harsh/snappy engagement!


Clutch cable is tuned ok, new transmission, +/-3cm chain slack (almost touching the rubber).


Maybe a outer basket notched?

Two things to check before you go pulling the clutch. The pivot hole in the clutch lever is not worn and elongated.  The adjustment unit in the sprocket cover is greased and correctly adjusted. The adjuster goes dry with age and make for poor clutch operation.

Is this just the renowned 1st to 2nd clunk, not sure what you mean by feathering the clutch. Maybe try clutch-less changing, I hardly ever use the clutch when going up the gears once im in 2nd. Not sure what that will prove but if that is clunky then maybe its not a clutch problem. But clutchless changing may take a little practice to get right before you can do it smooth so  :crazy .

Is the clutch adjusted properly from the bottom end first, then tweaked at the top? And as unfazed suggests, lubricating the bearings in the sprocket cover with grease can make things a lot smoother. It's not an obvious thing to do but worthwhile.


How old is the cable? Maybe that's on its way out?
