Sounds like hard work. Think I'll crimp and hope!

Anyone know if I can do this mod to my 98 Fazer? I think the headlamps are different.

Forgive my ignorance, by pilot light you mean those stupid little sidelight things, not the main bulbs?

I too would be most interested in seeing what you did in more detail. The lights as standard are not great are they? I changed my bulbs to Osrams and whilst this helped considerably, it could still be better.

Leave the earth as it is and use this to piggy back into ignition. 2 min job.

Nice having warm fingers on a cold day just watch your mates at lights they tend to get a little snatch happy for my grips and we can not move when they are taking the piss

Got the little fuse piggyback gubbins today. How do I attach the live from the grips to it? Do I have to strip the wires and crimp or is there a more elegant way of doing it?

The newer oxford grips have built in battery protection, I havn't tried it yet and dont plan too  :lol .

Anyway OP  :useless

And where did you hide the excess cable from each lead?
lol! I'm not sure you need pics. You know what grips look like?!

It is the newer grips with battery protection. I'll still move the live though.

The excess is cable-tied by the left fairing at the moment. Not sure what to do with all that cable...

FZS600 Fazer / Oxford heated grips fitted -- Yay!

Just wanted to share my experience of fitting Oxford heated grips. I'm not particularly mechanically minded, so if I can do it, anyone can!

I spent quite a while on forums and watching Youtube videos about fitting the grips and then I spent some time figuring out how I wanted them orientated and where to run the wires. If you use superglue as Oxford recommend, then you want to get the grips in the right position first time and rather quickly (in a few seconds)!

Getting the old grips off was a doddle. I used a screw driver inserted from the bar end of the handlebars to loosen the grips from the existing glue. The left came off in tact. I had to cut the right off as it moved with the throttle slider when I was trying to twist it off. Whatever glue had been used previously came off cleanly and no cleanup or sanding of the handlebars was required.

I spent a while dry-fitting and experimenting with the throttle-side grip which slid on with little effort. The lefthand grip would not go on. The diameter looked too damn small so I gave up after an hour of trying and tried again the next morning. I'm sure I'd read somewhere about heating the grips up making them expand which allows them to slide on easier, so I wired them up and turned them on 100% for 10 minutes. The lefthand grip slid on hot fairly easily with a little help from some WD40 to lubricate. Didn't use glue on the left as I cant get the bugger back off (!) but did use superglue on the right as I didn't want it sliding around whilst riding.

Wiring was straight forward, it just takes a little thought and some cable ties. I went straight onto the battery terminals but I'll change that when I get it clear in my head how to wire on an ignition circuit. I wrapped the molex plugs with insulation tape to protect from rain.

Hope that helps someone. I'd highly recommend heating them up before fitting (you need to test them anyway, right?) and some careful thought about positioning. Have used them around town and they feel great -- 100% is too much after a while. Hopefully they'll cure my numb fingertips!

Interesting thread with good info. Only been riding since August 2013 and am wondering how far into the winter I can ride.

... It's made my mind up to splash ou on some new winter gloves with smaller cuffs, just been reading a visor down post on ten best winter gloves for under a hundred quid...makes interesting reading how absolutely crap some are!

I bought some Weiss Legend gloves (about £60) on the basis of a Visor Down test and I'm not too impressed. It's not been too cold yet down here in Kent but my finger tips and thumb have been freezing on my throttle hand. Maybe my expectations are unrealistic since I'm pretty inexperienced? They don't seem to be totally windproof either. They are, however, waterproof, not too bulky and have nice grippy fingertips.

After experimentation with starting my bike in the recent cold and wet weather, my Fazer likes full choke to start and no throttle whatsoever. About 3-5 seconds after it starts, the revs die down so much (around 1k or just under) that it sounds in danger of stalling -- but it doesn't. It was at this point I was previously giving it a bit of throttle but this floods the engine making it stall and difficult to start again for about 30 minutes. So I resist the throttle and after a few more seconds the revs pick up to 2-3k and I can start reducing the choke.

Added this in case any other noobie like me has the same problems starting a cold, soggy Fazer.

I had an issue with stubon starting last year and it turned out to be the sparkplugs, I had already brought an air filter to ruel that out but once the sparks were in all was fine and I never bothered with the air filter and have only just  got around to fitting it. heres that http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,6412.msg112918.html#msg112918

I had new plugs and air filter fitted a couple of months ago. Battery seems ok.

I've been having trouble starting mine recently with the damp and cold. I ride it to work every day and it usually starts with full choke and a touch of throttle but not always and have flooded the engine a couple of times trying.

Is there a knack to starting these things?

Just ordered a set of data tool grips as my index finger always goes numb when riding this time of year, which really is annoying.  Looking forward to toasty hands and warmth to stop the dead finger issue lol.

Yes, me too. Really annoying. So far this autumn/winter, just my thumb and first two pinkies on my throttle hand are feeling the cold. My left is fine. Must be the subtle difference in position on the throttle. Only using Legend gloves at the mo. Thinking about heated grips though.

Not sure how long into the winter I want to ride. Don't feel confident about riding on frosty roads first thing in the morning when the temperature dips below freezing.

Back in the day when London weekend television were going , I picked up a job about 2.30 in the afternoon went down lower ground indicated to turn left to go up to Waterloo bridge always on the mirrors nothing behind slowed down to about 10 mph checked the mirrors again a black motor  appeared in the  mirrors at speed bang . I think they must of hit me at about 40 mph rammed me up onto the pavement that's when things get abit hazey . The bike hit a tree that's where my CX 500 stopped . I must have gone up into the branches because the tree snapped at about head height , this must of slowed me down but I still travelled another 40yards where I slid into a bollard in the middle of the road. The woman who had been driving the car was standing apologising and saying sorry I didn't see you . Then people turned up standing over me asking if I was alright then asking who was driving the car that hit me. Still laying in the road I said there she goes , she had taken off in her BMW estate. The police caught her in Chelsea where she had hit another vehicle . I couldn't get any details about her for 3 months until she was prosecuted by Chelsea . All she got was a fine and two and a half year ban for drink driving. It took me over a year to get any insurance money . The damage was abit more extreme the fairing was one of those big fibreglass one piece jobs it must of exploded when it hit the tree . I did get it back on the road again when I got paid out . Nowadays that would be a right off

Ow. That sounds painful. I consider myself incredibly lucky.

General / Rear-ended gently at a roundabout
« on: 13 November 2013, 08:45:49 am »
Two days ago I was waiting at a roundabout waiting for an opportunity to enter. It was dark and raining. I had a fluorescent yellow jacket on, lights on, and I believe I was holding the front brake. I see a car approach in my mirror, think nothing of it, then I feel a jolt as the car gently collides with my rear tire moving me about 6-8 inches forward. I park, dismount and politely insist on the driver's number. How the foc the driver didn't see me is beyond me!

The bike looks undamaged, it was only a gentle nudge and the driver was quite apologetic, but it got me wondering if the driver was fixated on my jacket and used that to judge the distance to me rather than the rear of my bike.

Oh well, no harm done, but very annoying. Anyone else had similar? Is there a possibility for hidden damage with such a minor collision?

If you have 90 mins spare try watching this

Its helped me understand a bit more

Thanks for this. Watched it last night and found it very enjoyable and informative. In fact, I've just ordered it for a friend of mine. Watching it gave me more confidence is my bike and my own abilities. I just need to relax and do what my instructor always told me to do!

Don't bar end mirrors make the bike a bit wide? I've seen them on a Sportster I think and they seemed to stick out quite a bit.
