Morning all! Nightshift a tad light so posting this up for help please!
2008 FZ1-s, love it, never fails to induce that Cheshire cat smile!  :D
Only came with 1 red and 1 black key, no probs me thinks, get a spare black one on-line, and use the DIY programming procedure.
Well, procedure works, but will only allow 1 black key, either one, to be recognised, the other will spin it but not fire it up!
Same with either black key.
Popped into local dealer, CMC Cannock, and the service lad said "you still got the missing black key programmed in the ECU, max of 2 keys, that's why a second cant be programmed"!
Logical when you know how!  :\
BUT.....can I find how to delete keys from the ECU? Told me it can be done DIY, didn't say how tho'!  :'(
So, can anyone out there advise how to delete all keys from the ECU so I can start again and have 2 working black one's?
TIA - Dick Snow.

General / Multibike insurance

Couldn't help meself! Offered an FZS600, 2000 vintage, alway wanted another as still reckon it's one of the best all rounders!
Insurance is due on an old BSA I have in the garage also (very fortunate and a very tolerant wife!) and just looked at a quote with Bennets for multi-bike.
So for BSA, classic renewal is pence short of £100, whereas the BSA, FZS600 and a CRF250 (again, very fortunate!) will be £160 with Bennetts, fully comp, 2000 miles on each, seems really good!
Tried Carole Nash as well but after 10 minutes of waiting gave up!
So, anyone any experience with multi-bike policies? Bennetts as a provider? Any other thoughts?

I changed to a normal controllers and relay setup as had the grips turn on with them connected to battery with ignition off  and bike connected to optimizer grips turned on on low setting
sorted now work great when needed
Thanks for that Steve, restores my sanity! Glad to hear the same effect suffered by others, just waiting to see what they do about it now, shame as they really are a well made product!

Appreciate this is a very personal issue, affected by size, build, posture, kit etc. etc. etc.
With the bike came a set of LSL Sonder-Lenker handlebars.
Never heard of them, seem well made, just wondering if they may be known of, and if so are they a recognised retro-fit improvement?
Look slightly higher and wider from standard, no locating holes for retaining lugs on switchgear, would like to try them if the concensus is they are a good mod?
Really dont fancy removing lugs on switchgear in case I regress to originals, drilling holes in new bars again is an option, but again need any info as to is it a valid mod or not.
Thoughts and info please?

General / R&G Premier heated grips
« on: 18 July 2020, 05:04:54 pm »
Anyone out there fitted a pair of these to their steed?
Never had any issues with standard R&G heated grips, several set fitted, great value and well effective.
'Cos of that thought I'd give the "Premier" heated grips a try as the Oxford ones on my thou' were dead when i had the bike.
Fitted, the grips really are some of the best, nice controller as well.
Wired through an ignition fed relay, work a treat!
BUT........as soon as I start the engine, they turn on, lowest heat setting, can be turned off, but just annoying.
As bought thru' eBay R&G said have to deal with seller, spoke to Demon Tweeks, within 2 days new controller arrived!
Exactly the same fault, ignition on, they're off, start the motor and they auto switch on to low heat.
Wired them up to me car battery, same thing!
Reckon the voltage sensor that turns 'em off if too low is getting confused, and when charging, 13.5V ish, it turns them on.
Waiting now for update from seller / R&G, anyone else suffered same?

Evaluating the new can!
I really do like sound of the original silencer, but have to admit it is a tad on the large side! Almost as bad as the original "Scud" bolted on the side of my old GTR!
As I fitted a Delkevic on the Kwak, thought lets try one on the new toy, fair bit of metal for the cost.
So, trip to DK and came back with the new can, fitted so easily, looks the mutts, and after a few miles well happy with the sound and the mildest of popping on the overrun!

Only 1 key as with master allowed to be programmed at a time?
When you use the red master key yes, only one key can be done at a time! If you want more than one key done then go to an Autolocksmith or Yamaha dealer.

Created a YISS faq thread - http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php?topic=26347.0

Thanks Dude, logical answer that I can relate to!

I fail to see that anything is wrong with the eBay key, as said above, the DIY programming works, and the key is seen by the ECU, and works a treat!
Just that the original key will not work now! However, if I do the programming proceedure for the original key, it is then fine but the new key no longer works!
So I can have either and the red key, but not red and both!
Is there a "maximum number" of keys allowed by the ECU? Add a new one and it removes an existing one?
Suppose it's off to main dealer and pay for programming unless anyone can advise?

  • How did you do the programming can I ask? there is no info on forum about this and I would like to add it to the FZ1 faq.
  • It would seem a bit daft that you can only have one active key - was key genuine yamaha? got a link to the ebay seller as this info could be usefull to other owners.
  • If you loose the master you would have to buy another ECU with a red master, immobilisor and matching keys. Or  you can go down the route of replace the  immobiliser with a 'immobiliser emulator' - http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php?topic=25755.msg304958#msg304958. But you would loose the security function and I assume have to technically declare this to the insurance co.
Lastly what did you local Yam dealer say about your issue..?

1 - ok, programmed as found detail on the web - https://youtu.be/j4JVcC1O2ow :-
-Insert RED MASTER key, turn on, start engine, stop and remove key.
-Immobilizer light will start after 30 seconds
-Reinsert MASTER key, turn ignition on, then off, remove MASTER and insert NEW key within 5 seconds and switch on ignition.
-Remove NEW key, then re-insert and switch on, new key will enable immobilizer off and start engine.
It really is that easy! OK, might have took 2 attempts, but it does add new key to ECU, albeit I can't use original, but can easily toggle between the two.
2- Ebay link below, this is not a genuine Yamaha key and doesn't claim to be:-
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-Blank-Key-with-CHIP-R1-R6-FZ6-FZ1-FZ8-FJR1300-XJ6-MT10-Gold-Silver-blade/203022906755?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
3- Immobiliser emulator, really cant see the point, not risking invalid insurance as undoubtedly they know what to look for!

Yamaha dealer - after being told a replacement key would be £52 + vat, then labour time ( 30 mins min) then getting key cut is the whole reason I went eBay route, £21 for blade then £5 for cutting.
If I went back would be like a dog with it's tail between it's legs!
Pleased key works and it can be associated to ECU, but miffed that by adding new key I loose old key functionality, but easily changed.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Replacement keys - advice please!
« on: 15 July 2020, 08:17:01 pm »
My 2008 FZ1 came with 1 key and the red master.
Having lost or broke keys in the past, me thinks better get another spare black one just in case.
Bought spare off eBay, arrived and cut at local key grinder, chip read as per spec found on-line, jobs a good 'un!
Here's the BUT though, original black key that came with the bike now longer acknowledged by immobiliser! :'(
So, programme original key, then new one won't be seen by ECU!
Is this just the way it is? Only 1 key as with master allowed to be programmed at a time? Or have I just bought a DUD from the Bay? :\
So spare key to be read when original lost, which is why red master is so valuable?
Any thoughts or detail please let me know,
Dick Snow.

At last, spare hour or so, thought get on with service the newly acquired FZ1!
Started by getting in the air filter and changing the plugs, previous chap advised me it was fully serviced when he bought it in December, didn't strike me as mechanically minded tho!
Oh my! Don't ever think I've seen a filter like it!  :eek
With 30K on the clock and 2008 vintage reckon it's the original!
Same with the plugs by the looks, at least they're all the same colour, and not black!
So new plugs (I need smaller hands!) oil and oil filter and hopefully new air filter tomorrow courtesy of Amazon!
Hopefully will be able to test and see what it goes like now it can breathe!
