One thing to watch out for after October 1st
« on: 08 September 2014, 03:42:47 pm »
I have just received my tax disc from dvla and on there it mentions about not needing to display a tax disc, the other thing it says is when you sell a vehicle the tax stops then, when you send off the log book you will get a refund, that means the new owner will need to tax the vehicle before using it, so now it is a waste of time and money taxing a vehicle as a sweetener if you are going to sell it.

...and therein lies the great con. because every time a car is sold and its not the 1st of the month - the car will probably be taxed twice that month (the seller wont get the month refunded as the month has begun..but the buyer will still need to pay for the full month as well!)

I can't imagine the dealerships will be too happy about the new system either.I think they generally submit the tax discs for a refund on cars that come in with any tax remaining.(Every time i have bought a second hand car from a garage i've had to purchase a new tax disc for it).Under the new system they won't have that option will they?.

What happens if a used car dealer hasn't got trade plates? He will need to tax it, so that a punter can take it for a test drive. If this is the case, he will be added to the V5C reg document as the new owner! This scenario will also apply to bikes :eek

There was a bloke on the radio the other day who collects old tax discs.Bit like stamp collecting,it's even got a proper name for it!.Some of the really old/rare ones are worth hundreds. :eek
