For Sale & Wanted / FZS 600 Frame
« on: 13 September 2013, 01:10:23 pm »
Mostly to see if anyone is actually interested.

I have the frame from a '99 FZS 600 sat in my garage doing very very little.

Now, it has been through a fire so take from that what you will. The swingarm is still attached as are the yokes but it needs to be gotten rid of (engine / wheels / forks / various other bits are not included)

The bike it came from is still registered in my name and is currently SORN. The DVLA and Insurance Companies have NOT been told about its unfortunate demise so there is no write-off against it. It is free to collect or if you want it shipped then you will have to arrange a courier.

If there is interest then I'll get some photos up for you. Could be helpful for a restoration / rebuild project?

For some reason I am completely unable to get in to the "Username." thread in the General section. I was able to post in it yesterday, but now it just won't load... completely blank page presented by the browser

FZS600 Fazer / Bar End Weights
« on: 03 September 2013, 08:40:00 pm »
For some reason, bar end weights just completely befuddle me  :\

I have just taken delivery of and fitted a set of nice new Renthal 758's but I need some bar end weights as they buzz like mad - my existing bars were just as bad and the buzzing has nothing to do with the Renthals

So, they are currently untouched. What do I do oh wise foccers and what do I buy...

I spotted these on eBay but they seem kinda expensive but are marked as for Renthal bars. Now, how are they fitted? Do these come with some sort of thing I put inside the bar or is that unnecessary in this case? Do I need to reuse whatever is inside by old bars?

At the end of the day, I don't want to buy something that ends up being useless and won't fit :(

FZS600 Fazer / Engine cuts out when put in gear
« on: 02 September 2013, 05:46:12 pm »
So I've finally got to a point in my rebuild, after the crash 4 weeks ago, that I was ready to test the bike on the road...

Bike was reluctant to start at first, but it came to life and everything seemed like normal. Still on the centre stand I figured I'd check everything out first to make sure I didn't get any nasty surprises. Kicked it in to gear with the clutch pulled in and the engine cuts out... crap.

So I put my investigating hat on and immediately set about checking the Sidestand switch. Got my multimeter out and checked resistance across the switch - all good! Checked the Fuses (Haynes suggested to :\) and they all seem fine. At this point my multi-meter decided it would run out of battery power and I don't have any spares so that's me done for now and figured I'd get some ideas from you good folk

So here it is laid out;
  • Engine cuts out when put in to gear
  • Sidestand switch tested ok with multi-meter
  • Fuses ok
  • Engine off, in 1st, clutch pulled in - won't start
I'm thinking my next step is to test the clutch switch?

Hopefully someone might have one lying around ^^

FZS600 Fazer / Fork Damper Rod
« on: 14 August 2013, 10:52:45 am »
Exactly how important is it to remove the bolt securing the damper rod from the bottom of the front forks when changing the oil / seals?

I can't get the bugger out - a combination of my shoulder still being a bit busted and not having any real way to clamp the fork lowers to prevent them from spinning unless I grow several more appendages...

FZS600 Fazer / Rear Caliper Mounting Bolts
« on: 18 July 2013, 07:49:37 am »
Anyone have idea what size they are? I don't have the time to order them from the internet, so its to B&Q again to dig around in their Nuts & Bolts aisle and be confused for about a half hour  :rolleyes

I think the closest match is probably M10x50mm ? Can anyone confirm?

FZS600 Fazer / Replacing Chain
« on: 12 July 2013, 09:54:28 am »
Hi all, trying to replace the chain and I've hit a snag whereby the chain tool I bought is a load of crap... I can't get the pins to line up properly on the rivets to break the chain as they just slip when you apply any sort of pressure

Does anyone around the Chelmsford / Essex area happen to have a grinder / cutter / bolt breakers (or something) that I could borrow in exchange for beer tokens - need to get this work done ASAP to get the bike back in for an MOT retest without incurring further charges :(

General / So I was on Google...
« on: 06 July 2013, 10:53:08 am »
... searching for where to meet up with Exupnut for a ride and found this; http://goo.gl/maps/Xws0l

Was happily scrolling along the road and thought to myself, "that looks familiar!" - edged it back slowly and low an behold, a blue gen 1 thou :D

Went to Hein Gericke in Braintree today and broke my credit card... however, there is a fancy dress (optional) Charity Ride on the 20th July going from Braintree (start is the Hein Gericke store at 9am) to Southend stopping off at different places as they go. It's to raise awareness for Huntingtons Disease

Figured I would go along and wondered if anyone from the Foccers clan would tag along, any takers? :)

Forgot to pick up the darned leaflet so this is all from memory :P I was referred to the Facebook page WhiteHart Bikers by Lorrain (Lorri)

FZS600 Fazer / Carb Sync (Again)
« on: 25 May 2013, 01:31:23 pm »
So another Carb Sync thread in as many days :P Haven't seen this issue before though so figured a new thread would be best rather than hijack the other

My bike does not run well below 3k rpm and in traffic (less than 5mph) its basically like a bucking broncho unless you feather the clutch. Now this pointed to a carb sync problem in my mind and I knew I had trouble doing it last time but it wasn't that far out. In any case, I striped the tank off and got my Carbtune hooked up. It showed pretty much how I had left it last time (only like 3 months ago) where cylinder two was slightly lower than cylinder 1, 3 and 4 which were fairly close to each other. The problem I have though is that the needles do seem to jump around a significant amount compared to videos I've seen before. This time I managed to get a screwdriver down to balance 1 + 2 and now they are fairly close to each other and 3 + 4 are still close but 1 + 2 were slightly lower now than 3 + 4.

Now the strange thing (to me at least) was when I attempted to balance 1 + 2 with 3 + 4. When I adjust the middle screw, 1 + 2 hardly move anywhere though they do a bit. 3 + 4 however move quite a bit and when they raise, the engine RPM increases quite significantly. Balancing them with 1 + 2 means that the engine gets close to stalling and I've adjusted the idle a fair bit to compensate but the mmHg is around 200-210 instead of the advised 230-250 range

Some background; carbs were stripped and cleaned only three months ago and were balanced at the time (still had this jerking problem though). Engine has had new oil + filter, air filter is a K&N but not sure when it was put in - judging by the K&N website, it shouldn't need cleaning yet (based on how dirty it is), also tried moving the vacuum pipes around to make sure the gauges weren't faulty (they aren't). The engine does have 86k on it and it hasn't run "well" since I bought it - lack of care from previous owners basically.

TL;DR (Too long, didn't read)
Balancing 1+2 against 3+4 causes 1+2 to stay relatively where they are (between 200-210mmHg) and 3+4 to move wildly - as the mmHg for 3+4 increase, the RPM of the engine increases quite a bit (from say 1.1k to nearly 2k)

FZS600 Fazer / Oil Cooler Leak
« on: 06 April 2013, 12:02:26 pm »
After the fun and excitement of getting the engine removed and refitted earlier this year it appears that the Oil Cooler has developed a leak :( It's leaking between the cooler and the sump so it is likely the O-ring that is behind it. It is however a pain in the ass to get to and means a loss of all the brand new engine oil that's still in there as it drops below the min marker but doesn't trigger the warning light... yet... (it did once on my way back from Bristol which is what alerted me to the leak)

So, can anyone suggest a temporary fix until I have the money and time to deal with removing the exhaust and affording more oil?

Edit: Also, any ideas on where to find a replacement? I've looked but at £20-£30 for a little bit of rubber they can sod right off!!

FZS600 Fazer / Engine Rebuild
« on: 28 March 2013, 01:09:59 pm »
So as most of you know, my previous Fazer sort of burnt to the ground. I am however thinking of bringing it back to life but before I start on anything I need to make sure that it is actually feasible.

Now the fire got hot enough to render the rear wheel complete mush so with that in mind, how is the swing arm and engine going to have faired? Is it possible for me to salvage the engine and rebuild it, or is it simply destroyed? I would love for it to be ok, as I can potter about in my newly finished garage (today!!) and methodically dismantle and repair the old engine in my sweet time as I have a running Fazer to ride despite its many small issues...

The work required doesn't bother me and I think I have the tools and knowledge to under-take the job so that's not an issue either.

So without further babbling, are there any technical foccers out there who can lend some advice?

FZS600 Fazer / Carb Mixture Screws

Possibly a useless topic and redundant question, BUT

Is it actually possible to adjust the fuel mixture without having to remove the carbs?

Just an interesting thought, are there any particularly enthusiastic gamers on here?

I've spent the last 8+ hours watching the live stream for the launch of StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm - an RTS game which is huge in the e-sports community :) Unfortunately I'm not at home so I'll have to wait until I get back to get online and start playing later this week :D

FZS600 Fazer / Tyres
« on: 05 February 2013, 01:27:47 am »
Now the whole "which tyre, what pressure" thing has been done to death, so this is not what this thread is about, thank god.

I have a relatively fast leak on the rear tyre (a day ride out will easily see it drop from 40psi to below 10). I can't see any evidence of a puncture and I haven't time to fully investigate it further at the moment. But I don't recall hearing any hissing etc. It was suggested that maybe the valve was the issue.

Now the real question is, is it actually possible to replace the valve yourself?

FZS600 Fazer / Exhaust Studs
« on: 24 January 2013, 04:53:40 pm »
Hi all, what size are the exhaust studs? I can't for the life of me remember and I don't have a paper copy of the haynes (digital copy doesn't say). I'm fairly sure they are M10 but wanted to confirm before purchasing :)

FZS600 Fazer / I'M A FOCCER! (again)
« on: 23 January 2013, 04:27:30 pm »
After the unfortunate events back in October, I have finally purchased myself another Fazer. My bank hates me, a lot and its not the prettiest thing in the world yet, but I'm back on two wheels  :D

I'll get some pictures up tomorrow once I've collected it ^^

For Sale & Wanted / Wanted: FZS 600
« on: 15 January 2013, 07:06:58 pm »
I miss my Fazer so much (see my pain) that it just has to be replaced before I go insane and as far as I'm concerned, its a Fazer or nothing ;) My bank balance is however arguing with me, so I'm on a relatively tight budget but that's not going to stop me trying to pick up a bargain.

Realistically I'm looking at sub £1,000 and more around the £800 and lower. I've seen one or two which I'm investigating, but figured it couldn't hurt to plead with the Fazer community here :P I'm not overly concerned with it being in pristine condition as long as its been looked after and isn't a complete dog. MOT and Tax I can deal with having to fork out for, but I would prefer tyres to be in good condition. I've had a quick browse through some of the ones being sold here, but most are out of my price range or just too far away :(

Maybe someone out there can help me get back on two wheels, and I promise not to burn this one  :lol

For Sale & Wanted / FREE FZS 600 '99 - Fire Damage
« on: 14 November 2012, 11:08:50 am »
This is very much a long shot and just in case anyone can see anything of worth. My bike had a bit of an incident with fire whilst in a garage and it didn't survive  :'(

I have no intention on claiming on the insurance since the excess is at least half of what they would pay out and I can't afford to add anything to that to replace it. So, if you want to pick the bike clean be my guest, I'm not charging anything but obviously if you want it posted then that's up to you to arrange. The bike is in Chelmsford so if anyone is local you are welcome to come round

Parts that are Unavailable
Downpipes
Exhaust End Can
Brake Callipers (Lawrence)
Front Sprocket (Lawrence)
Cam Cover Ends (Lawrence)
Right Crank Case Cover (bmseven)
Front wheel (Fuzzy)
Clutch Cover (Stedman8)
Generator Cover (Stedman8)

So if any foccer is mad enough, there might be something of use here?
