Downpipe mounting studs
« on: 08 August 2012, 04:07:14 pm »
I've got me dad looking after Black Bess while I'm in the States, and while she's there I thought I'd task him with a bit of maintenance.

The bolts that hold the exhausts onto the engine, does anyone know what size they are and where I can get a nice set of rustproof stainless ones, with a gasket, too?

Stud (thread) size as far as I know is M8 (8mm), not sure what length off hand though.

I'll have a nose about, but I'm not too fussed; he's got a hacksaw and a grinding wheel, innit? Get some nice shiny brass nuts on 'em and it's a proper job.

As for the crush-gaskets, is aluminium or copper better, and why?

Assuming they're standard pitch? Sorry to be a PITA...

Not sure of pitch off hand - if you can get a stud out complete, take it along for comparison with the new ones.
Beware however, some stainless grades can still rust, if that's why your replacing them. Copper grease is probably a better idea to prevent rust seizure.
As for gaskets, I'd replace like-for-like with whatever you have already on it.
