"as long as the spindle isn't seized"
OR if the berk trying to undo the spindle forgets there is a clamp bolt and shears off the end of the torque wrench trying to undo the spindle first - DOH!!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Front wheel removal
« on: 11 June 2013, 07:05:03 pm »
Hi all,
Any idea why there is no tool provided to remove the front wheel and what do you guys use, went to use the bike today and the back tyre was flat, got a bloody nail in it!
Also any thoughts on only replacing the punctured tyre, I have pilot road ones on at the mo and obviously will have to get a new version looking at PR3 but can I just leave the front PR1 on as it has at least 2k of wear to go or should I bite the expensive bullet and replace the 2???

Why can't they just put the volume in gallons not poxy litres, so much easier to see how good our bikes are on fuel!!

Whiplash from a 15mph inpact doing a U turn? What a git, I bet his insurance will want you to take 50% of the blame too, do not accept that, my Dad did and its screwed up his renewals for years.
you were not at fault, and the git failed to make the proper observation before making a move, could argue driving with out due care etc
Glad nothing is broken too :)

if you can, check the voltage at the terminals with the bike running  and increase the revs, what happens??
I ask 'cos a mates CB500 had regulator problem and it cooked the battery, the volage was not controlled from the alternator and would creep up way over 16V as the revs rose over 2000......

+1 for the battery, mine does that when there's not enough juice to turn the motor over.
How old is the battery?
You should charge the battery and see if it then starts and also see how long it keeps the charge before binning it for a new one.

not trying I can get 50 mpg which given the tank is 21 litres gives a range of  230 miles, I have filled up at 200 and still not have to put 21 litres in, the max was 18. Regularly the light comes on at about 180 so still got, say 40 miles left.

+1 for the plugs, I had a similar problem, rough below 3k and normal above that, changed the plugs and made sure the caps were in good nick and DRY and pushed very fully home and then no probs normal serve was resumed :)

There's never a reason to hurry in Italy (or even some parts of France)
makes you wonder how they managed to make cars that go so fast!!

Cheers for all the great tips guys, Chamonix really depends on wether or not the people I know live there are going to be there on the days I plan to visit, if not then the route will change to include other passes but the advice to check the passes closed is one I need to remember!
Also great pics Ayjay, sounds and looks like a great trip I hope my mini version will provide some good pics too, now just need to get some new tyres fitted, PR3's maybe?? :)

« on: 25 May 2013, 12:56:01 pm »
Hi all,
Planning to go to the French/Swiss/Italian Alps this August. Looked at the map and it looks like there is no alternative to the Mont Blanc tunnel which costs about £25 to go through. Qn is has anyone done this trip and has a better route. Used long tunnels before the Frejus one for ex (but that was because it was November and the alt over the top route was snowed up and only vehicules with winter tyres were allowed up it) so I don't have a prob with them just wanted to know if there was a better way of getting from Chamonix to the Italian side without a massive detour.
Cheers

In my experience even cars with licenses are driven at  a max of 30 mph by old biddies :)
Though it is amusing seeing some huge overweight bloke trying to get out of one of those little 'voitures sans permis' VSP from now on!!
Vive la difference and all that!
How about one of those Morgan 3 wheelers..............

At least you have to have a license! In France you can, with no license, buy a 'car' (sort of mini smart type thing) that can do over 30mph and drive it on all roads apart from the autoroutes. They may only do between 30 and 40mph but if the thing ploughs into a load of children at a bus stop you don't need to be a genius to know who will come off worse!!

I suppose that depends on where the MOT bloke stands when he does the check!!

I got that figure (45 mpg)from a gen 1 going from London to Beziers (south of France) in a day, I thought I was keeping to the limits until I realised they were in km hahaha
Just going in and out of nearest town is a 40+ mile trip and get 55 mpg, not trying to save the juice either....

You can download the yamaha gen1 workshop manual from the us fazer site (I think)
There are many very useful people on this site who will be more than willing to help you out, unfortunately I can't be of much use as so far my 2004 gen 1 has not caused me any probs (thats buggered that up now I've said it!!) but never feel 'shy' of asking what may appear a daft or newbie qn, we have all been there and no one will think any less of you and you may get a useful reply. Some one on here has a signature to that effect.
You can also get loads of useful in on pats site, just google cartestsoftware and it will come up, genuinely helpful and with pictures too (well I found them handy :) )
Cheers
