tyre sizes

Hi all. I'm just repainting my spare wheels ready for new tyres. Has anyone any knowledge of size options on the Fazer 1999?
standard: 110-70 & 160-60. Is it possible to fit 120-70  & 180-55?

the 120/70 has been done a couple times, but its not designed for the rim, so you might end up with handling problems
The 180 definitely shouldn't be fitted, it'll be pinched in and the profile will be completely wrong.


Best bet if you want different tyres is to change the wheels really!

Thx for the reply. It's just that I've had ZX6R's for years & run options on those similar to that mentioned in my posting. Obviously each bike is different & I thought I'd ask if anyone here has messed about with tyre sizes on the Fazer S1. Bet someone has @ sometime. Just a matter of pot luck if they read this I guess.

You can fit a 120/60 17 to the front, but it will slow the steering a bit and the clock will be reading slower by around 5%.

The 120/70 is not recommended for a 3" rim

110/70 rim width 3"
120/60 rim width 3" or 3.5"
120/70 rim width 3.5"

hmmmm this answers my previous question about whether I should change my front tyre.  When I bought the bike last year it came with a 120 Pirelli on the front, I need to change the rear because it's knackered and looks like I should change the front too (even though the tyre is in good nick).

I put a sports compound 120 - 70 on my front wheel around 2009, and carried on with that to the present day.
Previously  it had a 110 - 70 Sports tourer on it.


My experience was that you didn't need to lean it over as much to get it round a bend.
Whether that was due to the compound or the size of tyre I don't know.

I'm thinking Metzeler Z6. Anyone tried these? Seems to be the one some dealers mention for the Fazer. But is it to be 110 or 120...?

I'm looking at the Z6 after some good comments on this site.  Will be ordering a set off Blackcircles (via quidco) and taking them to my local garage to be fitted :-)


It's deffo 110 on the front.  I popped mine by the local yamaha dealer tonight and he confirmed I should replace the 120 that the previous owner put on with a 110.

Z8 is a far superior tyre to the Z6

How? The 120 on a 3 inch rim will pinch up, and give a completely wrong pointed profile - which won't be at all similar to that on the back so best case scenario, the bike feels a bit funny, and worst case you'll have some serious handling problems.


Stick with the 110, as that's what the wheel is designed for. If you want a 120, fit a different wheel!

Z6 fitted here front and back. Gives me good feedback and cracking grip wet or dry - very stable under hard braking. Wearing very well and tbh outperforms my abilities on the 600 - maybe i'm just a crap rider tho

I've just had new tyres fitted. I did have 120/70 180/55 and it was all wrong, according to the chap at the shop. They didn't seem to wear oddly but now that I have proper sizes on there it seems to handle a little bit better.

I now have 120/60 and 160/60

Currently I've got Avon Storms on, which I like. But I picked up a nice front wheel to replace my worn disks, and there's a nearly new Avon Roadrider on it, stock size. My question is this:

I obviously want to match tyres, but they don't make 160/60/R17 rears for the roadrider. What would be the right size, or should I stick another storm on the back? They are similar tyres, I have Roadriders on my FZR400. They are designed for "early sportsbikes", so don't have the big 'uns. They aren't noticably softer than the storm.

The front came off another Fazer mk1 so someone has had a roadrider on the back before 150/70? Thanks if you can help.

This comment speaks of ignorance to me. We have this thread open, and a person who has a 120 on his bike saying it's good, and he's happy (having changed to it out of choice). We have another person who also has a 120 on the front, but wants to change back just because he is concerned. It's quite possible he will not notice a difference, it's equally possible that the bike will feel 'nicer' or that it will be less grippy with a 110 on it.




I say that if you want to try a 120 on the front - go for it. It's not a significant size difference, I doubt it'll make any more difference than changing your tyre pressures, but if you're more confident - great. And it might be better!

And what I'm saying is that the Fazers rim is not designed for a 120 tyre! Some bikes you can change the tyres on, for example the 6 inch rim on the back of my ZX9R can run either a 190 or a 200 tyre without it being an issue, as both tyres are designed for that size rim. The fazer however has a 3 inch rim, not the normal 3.5 inch for 120s, and as such the 120 tyres aren't designed to work with the rim! They'll pinch up and give a pointier profile, which then won't match the back at all and could at best, feel "okay", and at worst give some serious instability issues.


If you want a 120, IMO, fit a new wheel. Otherwise if you want a pointier profile, get a sportier set of tyres!


Having spent some time working at a bike shop you'd be amazed at some of the dangerous things people have done because "it felt okay to some guy on the net"!
