Lights - A question -but not about a mod
« on: 19 December 2013, 05:58:04 pm »
Hi,

So i had an accident in June. Since then I've had a replacement fairing and other parts fitted, pretty happy with the bike... except when i ride at night. Now i know the Fazer lights are useless, however what seems to have happened (I am assuming in the crash) is that the cone over the main beam has broken from its fitting. The guys who did the work just used some wire to hold it in its place, however when riding it a about a month ago at night on unlit roads i noticed that it is pretty much way over to the bottom left. Not a lot of use!

I'm looking at buying a new light unit and fitting it. I am assuming i'll have to take the whole front fairing off to do so? right?

Also, I saw a thread where some people had said not to worry about the cone at all. Is that correct? could i get a way with just taking it out? What are the odds on it passing an MOT like that?

I feel a bit bad just coming on and asking questions, though to be fair as a Noob i'd struggle to give advice.

Any help would be great,

Also Merry Chrismas to all you Foccers  :)

People generally seem to get away with simply removing that cowling. I felt there was too much dazzle and bodged my own out of some thin stainless steel… it doesn't block 90% of the useful light like the original, but does a reasonable job of reducing the glare for oncoming traffic.

The cone on my light broke which caused a mot fail. I removed it and it passed its mot.

New light units don't come cheap, although you might get a good second hand one if you are lucky. Yes you will have to take the fairing off but it is not difficult as long as you don't miss any of the fixings  ;) . Maybe try it without the cone first and see how it is.

Definitely don't feel at all bad about asking questions as that is one of the main purposes of this site. Often someone else benifits from it as well.

Have a bright (little joke there?) and merry christmas.

Sorry to hear about the accident HJFazer, hope you're better mended than your Fazer!?

I originally repaired my shroud, fixing it in place with a piece of clothes peg (read it somewhere on here) then removed it completely.

The bike passed MOT like this no problem.  I did have an Osram Nightnreaker + bulb in, which has a silvery blue tinted end cap. not sure of this went some way to mimicking (more effectively) the job of the shroud.

you can remove the shroud by poking it INTO the headlight from behind, and then use a magnetic stick or a wire coathanger or a well trained mouse on a leash to fetch it out through the larger right hand (H4) bulb hole.

That's written on here somewhere too, but thought I'd save you the search!

Cheers apage16, limax2, NotAnotherHill and Fazerider

I won a new headlamp unit on ebay but was only £40 so I think i'll try taking the cone out and see how it goes. I'll keep the other unit incase it does fail in May and do the work if necessary,

All good from the accident, only remaining damage is a ding in the fuel tank but other than that it's still looking lovely and my shoulder is now fixed :-)

Have a awesome Christmas everyone

OP, if you do remove the bulb shroud, can you post how easy it was to remove? I'm thinking that I might try that as well.

Even without the aid of a well-trained rodent to retrieve the unwanted bits?

Even without that!

I used a magnetic stick/aerial thingy that I got from TESCO for £1.

Cool. I might give that a go.

Is it possible to re-fit the cone thing if needed?

Glad to be of service!

So impressed, was I, with the aerial doohicky, that I upgraded to a Rolson one from Maplin. Three times the price but it had a rubber grip, a pocket clip and an led torch up its spout! We're talking the Bentley of the magnet on a stick world here.

Took it out of the packet, went "oooooh". Haven't used it since.
