I've had the fazer for 10 years now and at 16 years it's getting a little long in the tooth. Still runs well but getting scruffy.
So finally decide to get a new bike. That bit was easy. Deciding what to get isn't.
I've narrowed it down to two. Sensible vs Fun.
For sensible we have the Honda NC700X. Average 65MPG, excellent commute and service every 8000 miles. Zero miles on the clock and Honda finance at 4.9%and my old bike as deposit comes in at about £132 per month.
For fun we have the FZ8 - the bigger fazer. Nice familiar with oodles of power but only 40MPG. About 8k miles and with standard dealer finance probably similar to the Honda.
Sort of leaning towards the Honda, as I'm more interested in economy now.
Anyone have/tried either of these?

I ride a honda 600 Hornet great bike but 40 Mpg, so I took a NC 600 for a test ride temptd by what I saw claimed as 80Mpg, and it was supposed to hold its own power wise up to 80 mph with the cbf 600. It revs out at 6000 rpm so you have to get used to changing in time, I found I was judst about to change up when it caught me out each time on the test ride. I was riding in steady mode. I decided it was to lifeless especially for those great biking moments. I you go for one test ride it first.

I just changed after seven years of fazers - agonised about what to get because I mainly commute and do decent mileage. Couldn't afford new but if I could the mt09 with the fairing fad my name all over it. The two mt models have mpg figures that are impressive and come 2016 is imagine second hand they might start to sneak into my budget. I got a 2009 cbf1000 gt for a little over 3 grand with 19k on the clock. Power wise it feels very similar to the fazer 600 - maybe a bit more torque but it's been wet and slippery since I got it so not given it much. The riding position is very upright - even compared to a fazer which makes it feel a little top heavy it a lardy lad on board. Fuel economy is about the same as the fazer but with prices tumbling suddenly that's both harder to calculate and less important to do so. Overall it was the right choice for me. I seriously looked at the fz8 but the reviews always put it in third with whatever two other bikes they would compare it to. The nc 700 is just tooooooo dull - Honda have always made bikes that are easy and forgiving but every review moaned - there were a worrying number secondhand quickly after release. If going new my list bad on what you said mt09 tracer, versys 650, mt07.

Well, I've got the NC700X booked for a test drive. I'll see what finance is available on the MC-07/MC-09 and book a test drive for one of those at the same time.
Since 99.99% of my biking now consists of the drive to and from work - 8 miles each way, I'm not too worried about excitement - there is only so much you can do that's exciting when you're filtering through the traffic on the motorway.

I don't think I'd go for the Honda NC. Not that I've ridden one, but I think it would be lacking in the fun factor. Sounds like a great commuter, but not a bike for twisty lanes in summer sunshine particularly.

The NC has a 750 now. Perhaps the extra 50cc is just enough to put fun in the equation

Not being funny mate, but if you're more interested in costs, and your fazer still runs fine - why bother changing it? I'd personally keep it until it fell apart, or repair works started adding up, and then look to trade in. If you are only commuting then I'd probably suggest the NC750 - if you don't want one of the newer honda small engined models (500 odds, very efficient) - but they are incredibly dull.

Another option then - getting a personal loan out (lovely low rates atm) - then using it buy a used (like up to one year old or similar) versioj of the above bikes. You won't have to pay a new bike premiun, the interest repayments will most probably be lower, and you'll still have the same vehicle!

Have to agree with Joe, now loams are cheap there are other options. I know finance deals from the dealers are easy but you pay a lot for owning new. Have a lot at flea Bay at the demonstrators of the bikes you have identified. Instead of 6250 you will be paying 5000 for a bike with 1500 miles.

The honda finance will be hard to beat - 4.9%apr. EDIT: I take that back - there are quite a few available at the same APR!
No idea about the Yamaha as couldn't find anyone to go through the numbers today. Will call them Monday and find out.
Had a look at the MT-07 and sat on the demo bike. Quite like that one.
It's all gonna come down to test ride and finance...
To be honest, at the moment I hope the Honda drives ok - it's gonna be a lot better for the commute; better MPG, lower power means the back tyre should last a little more and no need of a back box with the tank storage. Then again ..... arrggghhh lol

Don't forget to enjoy shopping. As you are definely buying don't feel guilty about trying a few other bikes - just in case you decide you need more horses after all....
