Took carbs off, removed all pilot jets, were all clean from rebuild could see through them,..took mixture screws out on all 4 and blasted carb cleaner through with my finger over mixture hole until cleaner came out of pilot jet holes. Checked everything in bowls,Reset mixture screws cleaned everything up.
Swapped number 4 jet for number 2 , carbs back on,new plugs fitted
still number 4 plug black other 3 grey...
and downpipe not getting as hot as the other 3..
Depressed now !! but not beaten. What else to do/look for guys!! :rolleyes :rolleyes

It was crap through the rev range, I reckon I may have had a dodgy tank of petrol as it was ok before I filled her up,tried STP and put some Isopropyl in but no good,so as it was winter, thought I'd do the whole fuel system once the weather was better..
Had to get one mixture screw removed professionally on number 1 carb the rest I replaced as a matter of course.
I've been meaning to sort it for ages, now seemed a good time :'(
Can I just swap the LT leads into 1 and 4 coil, as the HT leads won't stretch to swap on plugs to see if that is the problem?
Thanks

Hi Gnasher thanks for that info, I've checked the spark and it's powerful at HT plug, even swopped coils with different plug caps and it was fine..

I ain't going anywhere so I'll check it again for spark and then whip the carbs out, and check the items you said.. :thumbup

Tha rebuild was because she was stuttering badly across the rev range.

It's loads better accelerating now since rebuild, but not 100% as I explained.

Tried 3 different plugs and they all came out slightly oily after about a 10 minute ride.

The oil isn't dripping, more like a mist on the end, I'm gonna buy a compression tester to try, she's only glt 34K miles on the clock.

Cheers

Rebuilt carbs, new o rings, mixture screws etc..bench set butterflies and mixture screws.

Put the carbs back on, starts ok with no choke, did carb balance, all good...sounds a lot better, and goes better now, but stuttery at low end.

Took plugs out and 1,2,3 nice colour, but 4 has oil (not petrol) on electrode..

Checked the coils, coil leads and caps, swapped with some spares still the same result, oil on number 4 plug.

Any ideas, carbs again, or am I looking at valve seals ??

Cheers

I thought the heat from welding the nut broke the "seal" of rust between stud and barrel ? I have seen that as the solution on loads of sites...

Never tried it personally tho' :rolleyes

I used 2 ratchet straps from screwfix (small narrow ones) to compress the shocker spring on my old thou..probably work here by the sound of it.. and safer than cable ties.

I've had an s2 and they are cracking bikes. They Like the revs and of course Fuel injected, handled well with good tyres and decent fork springs, I would

have another one.(Go for the later s2 after 2005 with different clocks)

I've got an fzs 600 because I love the character of the bike, and I can work on them easily..the s2 is easy to work on nothing too complicated.

Both bikes are shocking for windblast tho'...I've spent a fortune on screens and never found a really good one !! :rollin

Deffo no doubling up with o rings /washers etc..swapped the mixture screws around and still no protrusion on carb 1 into mouth of carb no matter which

mixture screw I used

..got 14 thou guitar

string (closest size to the height of other 3 screws.) and set carb 1 to that , so they are all roughly equal in the protrusion department !!

Hope it works now !!

FZS600 Fazer / quick carb question
« on: 05 October 2019, 03:21:18 pm »
Just refurbed carbs..new mixture screws in a couple o rings etc, and now resetting the mixture screws to 2 1/2 turns (003 model)..after setting to 2 1/2

turns,  carb number 1  has no part of the screw showing in the mouth of the carb but 2,3,and 4(tps side carb)have about 1mm sticking through

Should they all be protruding above the rim of the mouth of each carb, or is it normal that carb 1 screw is flush with the mouth of the carb ?

cheers

somebody wiser than me will tell you for definite, but I've never seen a breather hole on the forks.. reckon you're right fork oil is getting past your seal there ..

Unfortunately I'm miles and miles away in Gloucester  :\  I assembled the carbs back up today and will run her up this weekend..she was running ok

before, apart from a slight hesitation as I opened her up really quickly in top gear, plus I wanted to get a knackered mixture screw out.

Really appreciate your offer to have a look, I'll post an update next week :sun :sun permitting..

The centre one on your picture is the one I'm on about .... it comes in 2 parts, the slotted part , and under that the part with holes and

an O ring....the slotted bit has on 1 of the 4 has no centre hole, the other 3 have got a centre hole in the slotted part

this is really puzzling me now :eek

I checked the part number on Fowlers for the main jet and there is only one part number for the main jet..my thoughts are if there's no hole how does petrol get up through the main jet from the bowl ?? :rolleyes
