Sticky key :(
« on: 16 December 2012, 05:24:49 pm »
Hi all

After using my fazer a bit more since I bought it on Saturday, I have noticed that the steering lock is very hard to put on. Its not too bad from on to off etc but the lock is difficult in both ways. I have tried oiling the key and then working it through the lock but its not much better. Any ideas?

After seeing previous posts on here i think this is a common issue with these bikes.
My lock feels temperamental some days more than others, i've tried putting WD40 and 3 in 1 oil on the key to try and give it some lubrication but it only helps a little bit.
There is a knack to locking it and after you've done it several times you won't really think about it too much.
You must push the handlebar as far left as possible when locking to make it a bit easier though.

Yeah, its similar to the Honda's I had, although I do remember my YBR being a pain to lock as well. Im sure I will get used to it, however both keys look a bit worn. Shame I have not got the key number to get a new one cut.

on the 3 laters I've ridden, all had key barrel issues. the trick is to lightly push the key up towards the clocks as you turn, but admittedly it is more difficult to do for the steer lock, but I rarely if ever used it.

The trick still applies, just lifting it gently upwards perpendicular to the direction of the key into the barrel

Try rubbing a pencil along both sides of the key then putting it in, You should lubricate a lock with graphite, NOT oil!!

According to the Frazer service manual its lithium grease. In which case you should not put graphite in it or it will turn into a mushy mess

Any engineer or half decent locksmith will tell you NEVER to lubricate a lock with oil or grease, as you said, added graphite will turn it to mush.... as will any dust or anything else that should get down the barrel. Locks should always be dry lubed, as should a zip, worth remembering when your leathers dont do up!!  ;)

So what do you lube a lock that has already been lubed with lithium grease then?

If grease works and you already have it in there, why would you want to lubricate it again??

Because its not working/dried up! If its pre lubed with grease but grease not graphite should be uses to lube it. The. How do you re-lube it?

If its a worn Id just use a disc lock or something, more hassle than its worth changing the barrels and keys etc.

Mine's the same, I put it on once and it took about 15 minutes to get it off again  :\   Not helped by part of the steering stopper missing though.  I've never missed it though, the disk lock is good enough.  It's more to stop people moving it out of its space when it's busy and getting me a ticket rather than stopping it from being nicked.

Just an update. It works fine now its been lubed. You get to know the feel of the lock after a while and the method required :)
